Charlie Brown's Bar and Grill

Neighborhood tradition
980 Grant Street
Denver, CO 80203-2907
United States
+1 303 860 1655
Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. The gyros are favorites, and the steak and lobster are the best deals in the city. The expansive patio is a definite hotspot on summer evenings.

Ogden Street South Bar and Grill

Have A Bone To Pick On Mondays
103, South Ogden Street
Denver, CO 80209
United States
+1 303 722 0592
A T-bone, that is. While Ogden Street South Bar and Grill has diverse offerings on its menu throughout the week, Monday night's T-bone steak special keeps the red meat lovers coming back on a regular basis. The meal is rounded out with soup or salad, your choice of potato, and a dinner roll, though all are merely bit part players on a plate where the succulent, cooked-to-order T-bone holds center stage. Other regional menu item include Mexican, Greek, vegetarian, and good old American. Wash any one of these down with a drink from the decently-priced bar menu, and don't forget to ask for a toothpick. -Theresa Ludwick

Pete's Central I

Fine Greek cuisine
300 South Pearl Street
(at Alameda)

Pete's is small in space but its interior is refreshingly free from the standard, restaurant chain look. Everything about the menu is traditional. One can start with Spanakopita, puff pastry jammed with spinach and feta cheese, as an appetizer. Then advance to the Lamb Loin Chops, or the Chicken Kebob. Top the meal off with Galactobovriko (baked farina custard with vanilla and cognac) for dessert. Vegetarian entrees are also available. A separate lunch menu is served during weekdays.

Pete's Gyros Place

Our gyro
2817 East Colfax Avenue
Denver, CO 80206
United States

A popular spot with the Capitol Hill crowd, Pete's prepares a mean gyro. The Greek wraps come stuffed with goodies on thick pita bread dripping with a tasty cream sauce. If that does not tempt you, the kitchen creates an assortment of hearty sandwiches and breakfast dishes, all in a homey diner setting with views of the interesting, and sometimes weird, happenings on Colfax Avenue. The only drawback to Pete's is that the desserts rarely live up to expectations. The atmosphere here is casual and friendly and kids are always welcome.

Pete's University Park Cafe

Forget health food, and dig in
2345 East Evans Avenue
(at University)
Denver, CO 80208
United States
+1 303 733 7376
One word describes the food served at this neighborhood greasy spoon-grub. The owner has been a fixture in the Denver dining scene forever running such local favorites as Pete's Kitchen and the Satire Lounge. His latest venture, Pete's University Park Café, continues a long tradition of short order delights including an excellent Italian sausage sandwich and breakfast burrito. But the gyros and domades keep the crowds coming. Do not expect health food here unless you consider a side salad and grilled cheese sandwich diet food.

Sam's No. 3

Serve It Again, Sam
1500, Curtis Street
(at 15th Street)
Denver, CO 80202

Once upon a time, there was a restaurant in Denver. Started by an entrepreneur in the 1920s, it was called Coney Island, third in a chain of five, and it served good old comfort food. Over 70 years later, the restaurant reopened a few doors down under the management of the original restaurateur's grandsons. Sam's No. 3 still serves the same comforting food "with an attitude." Plunge into the Kitchen Sink Skillet for breakfast, while enjoying the simple, nostalgia-inducing interior. American, Greek, and Mexican fare await you at servings that exceed the prices nicely. -Theresa Ludwick

Yanni's

Greek food
2223 South Monaco Parkway
Denver, CO 80222
United States
+1 303 692 0404
Serving some of the best Greek dishes in Denver in a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of the sunny Mediterranean, Yanni's is one of the area's best-kept local secrets. Although the place tends to be noisy (especially on the weekends), the staff makes sure your dining experience is pleasant and comfortable. For appetizers, the Dalamaria and Tzatziki are good choices. The main entrées include seafood, kabobs, Pastitsio and rotisserie lamb. Of course, wonderful Greek desserts, such as Baklava and Galatoboureko, are available.
