Known for martinis |
630 East 17th Ave Denver, CO 80203 United States +1 303 861 2820 http://www.avenuegrill.com |
Stepping into this dining-nugget is akin to taking a trip back to the American supper clubs of the 1930s. Dark wood, brass fixtures and retro neon signs create the desired effect here. Its martinis have been recognized by the local press as some of the best in Denver, making it a popular after-work stop. Choose from an array of dishes ranging from upscale steak and seafood selections to local favorites, such as the vegetarian burrito and Mexican steak. For dessert try the Chocolate Tortillas or Key Lime pie. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ethiopian cuisine |
5501 East Colfax Avenue (at Hudson Street) Denver, CO 80220 United States +1 303 329 6139 |
You are not only encouraged to eat with your hands at this Ethiopian restaurant, but it is mandatory. Each guest orders from a selection of spicy lamb, beef, shrimp, chicken or veggies, and it comes on a platter lined with a spongy flatbread called injera. The food is flavorful and tends to be on the spicy side. A varied beer selection, including some African brands, will help cool down your mouth. Do not pass up the authentic Ethiopian coffee to close the meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Big burrito madness |
1740 East 17th Ave (at Williams) Denver, CO 80218 United States +1 303 393 7545 |
Bocaza, meaning "big mouth," jumped on Denver's burrito bandwagon a few years back and has since moved to the forefront of the bonanza, serving up fresh doses of Mexican fare in dizzying portions. While other burrito factories seek to streamline operations and menus, Bocaza keeps the choices coming, offering a variety of burrito and taco variations along with other inventive creations. The Fajita Burritos are classic, stuffed with tons of meat, veggies, and salsa. The Chicken Teriyaki and Arroz Bowls with the Tortas are also very popular. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian dining in a neighborhood setting |
4645 East 23rd Avenue (at Dexter) Denver, CO 80207 United States +1 303 377 1914 |
This charming Park Hill eatery occupies an old pharmacy and still has the original tile floor to prove it. Over the past couple of years, the place has developed a huge following, so it is a good idea to call ahead and get on the waiting list. Or it could be a long wait, especially on weekends. The cozy dining area, which is tucked between an open kitchen and the bar, seats barely 50 people, but gives the place the feel of a true neighborhood bistro. The signature dish, Pasta Felese, is a tasty mix of chicken, artichoke hearts, and other vegetables. If you are searching for a real treat, try the Chicken Marsala. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A touch of Switzerland in Uptown |
2011 E 17th Avenue Denver, CO 80206 United States +1 303 333 5243 |
A family owned neighborhood bistro located in uptown, Dario's specializes in hearty Italian and German dishes with an authentic Swiss interpretation. The intimate dining room is crowded with tables almost too small for chairs; you are so close to neighboring diners that you might consider sharing a dessert. Still, however, the restaurant drips with romantic charm. Patio seating is available during the warm months. The Swiss Lasagna is a prime dish, as is the Wienerschnitzel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Heart and soul |
2622 Welton Street Denver, CO 80205 United States +1 303 295 2125 |
Visiting Ethel's is an experience. If you are not put off by the run-down building, you are in for some good food. Hidden in the heart of Five Points, Ethel's house is a gem if you value comfort cooking. Her handwritten menu varies widely, as do her hours just forget what the sign says and call first. How do fried chicken, yams, and thick, homemade gravy sound? If that is not down-home enough for you, you can order up the neck bones when they are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Holistic eating experience |
1400 Cherry Street Denver, CO 80220 United States +1 303 333 5461 |
Govinda's Buffet, located in the Hare Krishna's Temple in East Denver, serves up a true holistic dining experience. Lunch and dinner come cafeteria style and only vegan dishes make up the menu which changes daily. The lentil and dal soup are excellent choices as is the vegan lasagna. You will never receive a bill for the food but they ask for a "donation" for the meal service, usually $7 for lunch and $8 for dinner. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Romantic hospitality |
4609 East Colfax Avenue Denver, CO 80220 United States +1 303 399 9282 http://www.mataamfez-denver.com/ |
If you cannot afford a trip to Morocco, just drop into Mataam Fez. Sit on the floor and eat your food with rose water freshened fingers. And if you do not think chicken and sugar go together, you will think again when you try the B'stella: a pastry that combines chicken, almonds, cinnamon and sugar in a crunchy wrap of phyllo dough. Be sure to order tea after the meal just from the pure "how-do-they-do-that" standpoint of watching the waiters pour into the cups from several feet up without spilling. Nightly belly dancers add to the authentic atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Deli-burger deluxe |
837 East 17th Avenue Denver, CO 80218 United States +1 303 837 8887 |
Surprisingly enough, New York on 17th prides itself on its hamburgers. Sure, you can get pastrami, liverwurst, corned beef and egg salad, but what you will come back for are the burgers: a nice half-pound of beef charbroiled to order and brimming with flavor. Check out the burger variations, especially if you like yours topped with chili. Have a little macaroni or potato salad and an egg crème on the side and you are set. Delivery is available for very large orders of USD100 or more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A real neighborhood find |
6115 East 22nd Avenue Denver, CO 80207-3927 United States +1 303 321 1511 |
This family owned pizzeria is a real find. Pictures lining the wall trace the owner's family history, and old record jackets from the 1970s and 1960s hold the menu. You can choose from an array of innovative, thin crust specialty pizzas, including the all veggie Berkley, or build your own creation. Calzones and pasta round out the menu. Beer and wine are available. The hours listed are tentative, because the owners like to say they close when they get tired. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hip Uptown diner |
1700 Vine Street Denver, CO 80206 United States +1 303 399 1700 http://www.rhino.com |
Serving contemporary cuisine with a slight French flair, this restaurant fuses a sparse, sleek setting with chic fare and a casual neighborhood atmosphere. The menu offers a mix of upscale diner items, including a USD9 grilled cheese sandwich and an array of burger selections, and new spins on local favorites like lamb shanks and grilled albacore. Portions are small, so if you are really hungry, steer clear from the dinner selection and stick with the sandwiches and burgers. And definitely order a piece of the divinely decadent chocolate cherry cheesecake. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A winner for sure! |
5410 East Colfax Avenue Denver, CO 80220-1410 United States +1 303 388 8429 http://www.solerarestaurant.com/ |
This restaurant has won the Award of Excellence presented by the Wine Spectator for the years 2003 and 2004, and not without good reason - the food, wine, and overall dining experience offered are all truly worthwhile. Try the Applewood Smoked Libery farms Duck Breast ($24), or the Grilled New York Strip Steak ($32) - they come highly recommended. Needless to say, the winelist is outstanding - pick from an extensive array of Sparkling Wines, Pinot Grigio, Italian and French Whites, Viognier, Riesling, and more. Private gatherings are also hosted. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Meaning of Coffeehouse |
2019 E 17th Avenue Denver, CO 80206 United States +1 303 322 8384 http://www.stmarkscoffeehouse.... |
This local hangout brings together all the essentials of a neighborhood coffeehouse. Art on the walls, interesting conversation and a great cappuccino make St. Mark's one of Denver's cultural hubs. There's always someone enjoying the patio and on nice days they slide open the garage door bringing in the fresh air and bringing together this coffeehouse and the neighborhood. Try one of their great paninis or sample from their wide selection of drinks from tea to beer. If you're looking for more, ask who's playing downstairs – there's a basement venue for local music.
