Culinary school operation |
675 South Broadway Inter Plaza Collection Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 824 4975 http://www.aic.artinstitutes.edu |
Homework takes on new meaning when dining here. As the name implies, this restaurant is run by students at the Culinary Art Institute of Colorado, and judging by the food and service, they are learning their lessons. The popularity of this restaurant can be attested by the fact that weekend reservations are booked weeks in advance. The menu is both creative and top-notch. The entrees, though limited, are diverse, with such items as mustard glazed steak, baked sea bass, and Duck Chasseur. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. East Coast pizza |
2107 East Virginia Avenue (at Gaylord) Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 778 7747 http://www.basildocspizzeria.com/ |
In Denver, a good pizza is not hard to find. But succulent, crispy crust, east coast-style Neapolitan delights are a definite rarity, unless, that is, you visit Basil Doc's. Check out the New Haven White Clam Pizza topped with romano, mozzarella, garlic and a hefty helping of fresh clams. The Veggie Pie is one of the few creations in the city that use just enough toppings without getting the watery effect. Other wild toppings include snow peas, shrimp and pine nuts. Salads are also available. Carry out only. Another location is 330 Holly Street, Denver, +1 303 332 5832. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Landmark Denver eatery |
457 South Broadway Denver, CO 80209-1517 United States +1 303 778 0147 |
The Blue Bonnet, a Denver dining landmark, is always busy regardless of the hour. The menu is loaded with high-calorie Mexican food and includes everything from burritos to Chile Rellenos smothered in red or green chili. The portions are enormous and to-go boxes are not only available, they are advisable. A sprawling deck is the place to be in the summer, although the only view is of a busy strip mall and of the traffic on Broadway. Pool tables are available and make for good diversions while waiting for a table. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Family owned since 1934 |
740 South University Boulevard Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 2262 |
This family-owned and operated restaurant has been a fixture in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood for more than 20 years. With a rough and tumble roadhouse appearance mixed with a family friendly atmosphere the tavern caters to all by serving outstanding pizzas, fine, down-home comfort food and lots of beer. The halibut is excellent and comes with a ton of side dishes. The chicken fried steak is a definite winner, but make sure you do not miss the pizza. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Make reservations well in advance or you may never experience this spirited little neighborhood bistro that specializes in inexpensive, larger than life, family-style Italian entrees. No matter what night this place is always jammed and offers a large enclosed patio year round. The eggplant parmesan makes for a wonderful main course, as do the many traditional pasta dishes. The extensive wine list offers a wide variety of reasonably priced selections. Most of the entrees serve two or more people. Valet parking available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Espresso and books |
1028 South Gaylord Street Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 1251 |
This elongated rectangle of a shop is the business world's version of a split personality. In the front half, where it sells magazines and a small selection of old and new books, the room has a bohemian feel to it with exposed brick and old chairs. The back half kitchen area, however, which sells everything from milkshakes to smoothies and espressos, is new and contemporary and even has a TV. Thursday night blues and folk jams draw big crowds so arrive early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Boasting the slogan "We ain't no Chain", the HandleBar and Grill is a popular bicycle-themed restaurant. From signed Lance Armstrong and Travis Brown jerseys to old Schwinn frames, to old photos from the Red Zinger and Tour De France - if it has to do with bikes, it is here. The handmade Half-pound Patties are broiled just right and served on a Kaiser Roll. For less than a buck more, you can add gumbo, green chile, or the Four Corners Chili instead of fries. Weekend brunch specials are popular. Dine here 10 times and the eleventh meal is on the house! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Escape to the Islands |
1052 South Gaylord Street Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 722 7456 |
This Washington Park neighborhood restaurant provides a fresh, island escape for beach-deprived Colorado diners. The interior resembles an old beach hut with an ambiance to match. The menu serves just what you would expect fresh fish and seafood. The restaurant knows how important a good selection of wine, beer, and cocktails is to having a great seafood dinner—and for downing those raw oysters. The grilled fish, crab, and lobster are all good choices. Save room for dessert, which is key lime pie, of course. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A classic diner in the heart of the city |
76 Broadway Denver, CO 80203 United States +1 303 777 7676 http://www.hornetrestaurant.co... |
Trendy and hip aptly apply to this happening nightspot just south of downtown. It combines a neighborhood atmosphere with an urban style making it popular with artists and businesspeople alike. Plus, it offers a rocking jukebox and one of the most attractive wait staffs in the city. A back room features two pool tables and a few video games. The menu offers sandwiches, burgers and several ambitious salads including the Mayan. The blackened catfish is superb. Live music, usually jazz or acoustic, fills the air on Saturdays. Casual food and atmosphere |
1066 South Gaylord Street (at Mississippi) Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 0194 |
Authentic, casual, and fun all aptly describe this restaurant and cantina. With its big front deck and relaxed interior, one gets the sense of being in Cancun rather than in a residential neighborhood. Its menu is best known for the homemade green chile, but also offers enchilada plates, fajitas and stuffed Sopapillas. The daily late night happy hour and late night kitchen make it popular with those who like to taunt the sunrise. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Have A Bone To Pick On Mondays |
103, South Ogden Street Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 722 0592 |
A T-bone, that is. While Ogden Street South Bar and Grill has diverse offerings on its menu throughout the week, Monday night's T-bone steak special keeps the red meat lovers coming back on a regular basis. The meal is rounded out with soup or salad, your choice of potato, and a dinner roll, though all are merely bit part players on a plate where the succulent, cooked-to-order T-bone holds center stage. Other regional menu item include Mexican, Greek, vegetarian, and good old American. Wash any one of these down with a drink from the decently-priced bar menu, and don't forget to ask for a toothpick. -Theresa Ludwick Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Greek cuisine |
300 South Pearl Street (at Alameda) Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 778 6675 http://www.petesrestaurants.com |
Pete's is small in space but its interior is refreshingly free from the standard, restaurant chain look. Everything about the menu is traditional. One can start with Spanakopita, puff pastry jammed with spinach and feta cheese, as an appetizer. Then advance to the Lamb Loin Chops, or the Chicken Kebob. Top the meal off with Galactobovriko (baked farina custard with vanilla and cognac) for dessert. Vegetarian entrees are also available. A separate lunch menu is served during weekdays. Step inside this longtime local's favorite, and the wooden tables, wood paneled walls, and dartboards will give you the immediate sense of being in an English pub. Matching the classic setting is the classic menu, which offers salads, pasta, seafood, steaks and Mexican dishes. Plus, it has outstanding burgers, which the local press has crowned as the "Best Burgers in Denver." Reiver's also serves Sunday brunch, with create-your-own omelets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small bistro with a bite |
727 South University Boulevard Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 733 6977 http://www.saucynoodle.com |
Located in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood, this restaurant is famous for a saying that is posted above its entrance: "If you do not like GARLIC go home!" The massive servings of traditional Italian fare, from manicotti to spaghetti and meatballs, all come with a little extra zing. If you are not a big fan of garlic consider eating elsewhere. If garlic happens to be your thing, try the lasagna for a powerful dosage of flavor. The house wine is not the best, but there is a fair wine list to choose from, and prices are reasonable.
