Riot of Fresh Food |
2934 N Russell Street Detroit, MI 48207 United States +1 586 393 8800 http://www.easternmarket.org |
Since the 1890s, farmers have brought their goods to market every Saturday at this area along Gratiot Avenue on the east side of downtown Detroit. The huge, semi-enclosed market has expanded into a six-day-a-week festival of food, drink and merchandise. A small artist/loft community also has sprung up among the warehouses. You can buy everything here from fine cheese, imported wines, honey, meat and spices in the unpretentious specialty shops that have sprung up around the central market area. On Saturdays, the action starts before dawn and the bargain hunters come late. On the first Saturday in May, the market hosts Flower Day, the largest flower market in the United States. Expect wonderful, cosmopolitan chaos in this Old World-style, authentic and unglamorous area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dearborn's Mall Extraordinaire |
18900 Michigan Ave Detroit, MI 48126 United States +1 313 593 1370 http://www.shopfairlane.com |
The crown jewel in shopping center magnate Al Taubman's empire, Fairlane Town Center is a fashionable destination that lures more than 18 million customers a year. Built in the 1960s, it has been renovated several times to make the layout less confusing. Big department stores such as Lord & Taylor and Hudson's vie for space in this 1.4-million-square-foot megamall with small fashion emporia and name-brand chain retailers. Several tiers of stores ring a central court. Its proximity to Ford World Headquarters and downtown Detroit make the mall convenient for the traveler, and it attracts a diverse mix of shoppers. Themes & Stores Galore |
4000 Baldwin Rd Detroit, MI 48326 United States +1 877 746 7452 http://www.shopgreatlakescross... |
Michigan's largest one-level shopping mall is laid out in a racetrack oval that encompasses 1.4 million square feet. The mall includes high-end outlet stores such as Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet and Neiman Marcus Last Call Clearance Center as well as value retail options, including a Harley Davidson outlet. More than 200 stores plus restaurants and entertainment outlets are divided among six architecturally separate themed areas. The theme concept is ubiquitous. In the Rainforest Café, there are mechanical animals and ersatz thunderstorms, and at the Alcatraz Brewing Company, the décor and personnel are prison-related. A high-tech indoor playland called GameWorks was developed with filmmaker Steven Spielberg's help. It's a shopper's paradise. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pulsating Center of Nightlife |
Monroe Street Detroit, MI 48226 United States |
In the lean years when downtown Detroit was moribund, Greektown was the only place alive at night, so it's only fitting now that as Detroit revives, Greektown is the jumpingest place downtown. What once was one block of nearly identical Greek restaurants has expanded into a throbbing center of restaurants, clubs, shops and a casino. The indoor mall, Trappers Alley, was an earlier attempt to update the area. The increasingly upscale but still affordable Greek eateries and bakeries, with their succulent baklava and other pastries, still provide the anchor for an increasingly diverse area. Columnist William Safire says this old book warehouse is the top tourist attraction in Detroit. To bibliophiles, it is a must stop. On four floors of the old Advance Glove warehouse are close to a million titles, ranging from the popular to the obscure, covering all kinds of subjects. It's a treasure trove for book lovers, who can spend many happy hours wandering the aisles. Owner King moved here in 1983 after outgrowing his first location. He has published about 90 rare book catalogues and handled the papers of celebrities, sports stars and numerous auto magnates. 115 E. Liberty Street Detroit, MI 48104 United States +1 734 761 3463 http://www.826michigan.org/store/ |
The Monster Union store is merely a cover for what goes on in the back of the shop, a sweatshop of sorts. Run by the evil monster/editor Thaddeus T. Blotch, this is a free tutoring center for kids to come and work on creative writing skills. It is Blotch's intention to make millions by publishing these books as the kids hone their skills. The store in fact, which sells such goodies as "monster drool" and cans of "dank," which Blotch supposedly keeps a can of in his car. Make sure to view the Scream Machine which turns the screams of children into Blotch's favorite drink. The store also sells collections of the children's writings and all proceeds to to benefit 826 Michigan, the nonprofit behind the store created by author Dave Eggers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Collection of Elegance |
2800 W Big Beaver Rd Detroit, MI 48084 United States +1 248 643 6360 http://www.thesomersetcollecti... |
Michigan's most upscale shopping mall is so impressed with its offerings that it calls itself a "collection," not a mall. Indeed, many shoppers would consider some of these stores works of art. Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren/Polo, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Neiman-Marcus and Hudson's are among the top destinations. Even during the busiest shopping days, Somerset has an unusual air of decorum. It's the equivalent of putting New York's Fifth Avenue indoors. Several dining options rise above the typical mall fare, but then, you'd expect that from a place that doesn't consider itself a mall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Boomtown Shopping |
27500 Novi Rd (Intersection of I-96, I-696 & I-275) Detroit, MI 48377 United States +1 248 348 9400 http://www.shoptwelveoaks.com |
Almost single-handedly, the construction of Twelve Oaks Mall turned Novi from a sleepy village into a booming suburb. Ideally situated to provide freeway access to both the newer northern and western suburbs of Detroit, Novi is in the center of explosive upscale growth. The mall's large, eclectic selection of mid- to upper-mid-range retailers perfectly suits consumers in the area, and the result is one of the United States's most productive retail properties. Around the mall has sprung up the usual collection of ancillary stores, restaurants and bars, and even eight-lane highways often can't cope with the sheer volume of attendant traffic.
