Beautiful Old Theatre |
211 S Old Woodward Ave Detroit, MI 48009 United States +1 248 644 3456 |
Most of Detroit's suburbs once had theaters like this one, but few remain. Located in the heart of fashionable downtown Birmingham, the Birmingham Theatre has survived several renovations and reincarnations and is now an eight-screen theatre that shows first-run movies. The intimacy of the theater makes it perfect for a romantic date or just good old-fashioned fun with the family. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Chamber music in the air |
Detroit Country Day School 22305 West 13 Mile Road Detroit, MI 48025 United States +1 248 737 9980 http://www.comehearcmsd.org/ |
Since 1943, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit has presented remarkable seasons of polished classical music despite never having a venue of its own. Musicians of national, international and local reputation perform on a sporadic basis, usually at the Seligman Performing Arts Center at Detroit Country Day School, a private academy in Bloomfield Hills. Occasionally concerts are held at Detroit's unmatched Orchestra Hall. If you appreciate chamber music, these productions are excellent and by far the best available in metropolitan Detroit. Noisy blues club |
100 South Main St Detroit, MI 48067 United States +1 248 543 4300 |
Memphis Smoke's large dining area offers a modicum of comfort with a maximum of noise provided by first-rank blues bands in no hurry to cut short their sets. The food, along with good hamburgers and other respectable bar fare, runs to southern specialties such as pork ribs, catfish, red beans and rice, and a country greens dish made from collards, mustard greens and Swiss chard. The mood is festive and friendly, but stay away if you're allergic to noise or smoke. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Community Theatre at its Best |
415 S Lafayette Avenue Detroit, MI 48067 United States +1 248 541 8027 http://www.stagecrafters.org/ |
Arguably metropolitan Detroit's most accomplished community theatre group, Stagecrafters operates out of the beautifully restored vintage neighborhood theatre, the Baldwin. It's located in downtown Royal Oak. On a main stage and a second stage, the group presents a variety of classic plays and musicals, with regular youth theatre performances. Organ-accompanied silent movies are also occasionally shown. It's an affordable alternative to grander theatres, and the performances are consistently good. Afterwards, you're in a great position to walk to a dining or drinking establishment on Main Street. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky and friendly, the Xhedos CafĂ© offers good coffee served in an unpretentious way, a surprisingly large menu of sandwiches, salads and desserts, plenty of leg room and comfortably stuffed chairs, local art on the walls, and live music nearly every night. Check out the bookcase in the hall leading to the back door. It's a serendipitous collection of books left by patrons, and next to it is a free literature stand that provides a snapshot of Detroit area artists, musicians and causes. Review © 2007, Wcities |
