Backstreet is considered one of top gay dance clubs in Detroit. A trendy warehouse style disco in Dearborn, it has been attracting crowds since the 70's when it was known as the'Escape' Disco. Although it is open only on Wednesdays and Saturdays the place gets plenty of people who come in and enjoy dancing to the loud electrifying music. What adds to the this fun-crazy atmosphere is the feeling of dancing against black walls, high ceilings and lights flickering across the metallic hues. There is place for those who want to sit and watch and for those who want to go out onto the dance floor. When in Detroit, a definite must-visit for the interested!

The adage 'Don't judge a book by its cover' can be applied to Baker's Keyboard Lounge, which looks like a hole in the wall establishment but is one of the oldest jazz clubs in the United States. So, if you're a jazz fan, this is THE club to visit when you want to watch jazz locals mix it up. Another fun feature here is the piano key painted bar, where locals spend many a night listening to their favorite tunes. If you are longing for a bite to eat while you enjoy the music, Baker's has a wide menu with some no-nonsense favorites sure to please.

Proud Survivor of Urban Theater

Detroit, MI 48238
United States
+1 313 868 1347
http://www.detroitreptheatre.com/
A true survivor, the Detroit Repertory Theatre has been located since 1957 along a now mostly abandoned commercial strip in a neglected neighborhood far off the beaten track. Isolated geographically and demographically and facing long odds, the theater has fought and scraped to stay open. From the start, its controversial policy has been to use actors of any race to play characters of any race. Some of the most exhilarating moments in Detroit theater have taken place at this small, bootstrap venue. For those who value risk-taking in theater, it's worth going out of your way to get here. A cash bar is available in the lobby.

The former home of playboy auto magnate Lawrence P. Fisher is an outrageously ostentatious, eclectic Art Deco mansion with four acres of formal gardens, pools and fountains. There are hand-painted leather walls and plenty of gold and silver leaf. In 1975, the great-grandson of Henry Ford and the daughter of United Auto Workers founder Walter Reuther bought the decaying mansion and restored it as the Bhaktivedanta Center of Krishna Consciousness. A fine arts gallery features Indian art. Individual and group tours are offered. Temple services run from pre-dawn to late at night.

Getting Involved in Dinner
108 East Main Street
Detroit, MI 48167
United States
+1 248 349 0522
http://www.genittis.net/
By day, this little spot in downtown Northville is a deli-style luncheonette, with homemade soups and sandwiches. By night, it's an interactive dinner theater, where the guests get involved in the mystery or comedy. The dinner is patterned after a traditional Italian seven-course wedding feast, and the shows take place in a 132-seat theater. The restaurant gets its name because its first expansion entailed knocking a hole in the wall of an adjoining market. A whimsical attitude infuses the entire place. The food is mainstream Italian, delicious and filling. Dinner is by reservation only, so be sure to call and claim a seat.

On the campus of Oakland University, Meadow Brook Theatre is somewhat remote from much of the Detroit area, but it's worth the drive. Since 1967, it has been the professional theater in residence at the university and has won many awards for excellence. Both local and imported talent from New York and Chicago contribute to the sets and productions. The venue itself is a rather sterile auditorium, but the sight lines and acoustics are more than adequate. You will need to drive if you want to eat or drink after the show, as no nightspots are available on campus.
