Upscale casual |
31471 N Southfield Detroit, MI 48025 United States +1 248 642 2355 |
Upscale food in casual surroundings is the hallmark of the Beverly Hills Grill, starting with an array of freshly made soups that can include rock shrimp with rice, turkey spinach, or a number of other specialties. Salads, too, are out of the ordinary, with selections like warmed tomato slices with peppers. Fish is featured among the entrees, including a lavishly prepared whitefish with chutney. The real pizza experience |
17125 Conant St Detroit, MI 48212 United States +1 313 892 9001 http://www.buddyspizza.com/ |
A Detroit tradition, Buddy's Pizzeria has grown from a little-known bar and pizza joint near Hamtramck to an institution. There are now Buddy's outlets in seven suburbs, but the authentic experience is at the original, crowded, multi-roomed eatery. Buddy's, which operated as an after-hours blind pig (a place that sells alcohol illegally) when it first opened in 1936, was the first spot in Detroit to offer Sicilian-style deep dish pizza, in 1946. The pizza is thick and filling and comes with plenty of cheese and sauce, and it is repeatedly voted the best in Detroit in local surveys. Salads, pastas, burgers, sandwiches and homemade soups are also on the menu. There is always a bustling party atmosphere. There's even a small area attached where locals play bocce ball, the Italian game of lawn bowling. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Forte offers an eclectic assortment of well-prepared dishes served in attractive surroundings, with Mediterranean cuisines topping the list. There are Italian soups and individual pizzas loaded with fresh vegetables and topped with thick layers of cheese. As an alternative, try the Moroccan-style salmon, or one of the numerous French entrees. Keeping with the diverse theme, the menu also offers Peking Duck, New Zealand Rack of Lamb, American Veal and beef short ribs, and an ample selection of seafood, including Forte's popular seared tuna steaks in spicy marinara or plum sauce. Getting Involved in Dinner |
108 East Main Street Detroit, MI 48167 United States +1 248 349 0522 http://www.genittis.net/ |
By day, this little spot in downtown Northville is a deli-style luncheonette, with homemade soups and sandwiches. By night, it's an interactive dinner theater, where the guests get involved in the mystery or comedy. The dinner is patterned after a traditional Italian seven-course wedding feast, and the shows take place in a 132-seat theater. The restaurant gets its name because its first expansion entailed knocking a hole in the wall of an adjoining market. A whimsical attitude infuses the entire place. The food is mainstream Italian, delicious and filling. Dinner is by reservation only, so be sure to call and claim a seat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Maternal touch in pasta paradise |
330 South Oakwood Blvd Detroit, MI 48217 United States +1 313 841 0122 http://www.giovannisristorante... |
Detroit almost lost an institution when a fire nearly destroyed this acclaimed restaurant, but the Truant family rebuilt and recaptured every detail of this cozy, gorgeous place known for its mouth-watering homemade pastas. The mother-and-son owners keep alive a long tradition started by her brothers. The Central Italian cuisine of San Marino includes elegant nightly specials, colorful raviolis, pasta fazole soup and a prize-winning selection of red wines. The service is solicitous and the atmosphere warm and professional. Quickie Italian language lessons are piped into the rest rooms! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian food and atmosphere |
215 West Nine Mile Road Detroit, MI 48220 United States +1 248 542 7379 |
This storefront restaurant in fashionably funky Ferndale has the feel of an Italian restaurant from the 1950s, complete with candles burning in Chianti bottles, and the food is as tasty and filling as you thought it would be. The breaded veal with sauteed shrimp, breast of chicken and eggplant with prosciutto in a rich tomato sauce are among the favorites, all accompanied by a garlic bread that draws high praise. The pizza is also popular, and the house wines are homemade. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Greektown with a Twist |
558 Monroe Street Detroit, MI 48226 United States +1 313 964 6800 http://www.pegasustaverna.com/ |
The newest, trendiest and most expensive of the Greek restaurants on Monroe Street, Pegasus is also the most adventurous. Besides the Greektown staples like eggplant, spinach pies and flaming cheeses, Pegasus has some American items and some offbeat Greek dishes, including squid, red caviar and tyropitaki (feta cheese wrapped in filo bread). Meals are cooked in an open kitchen in the front of the dining room, which is festooned with fake grape arbors and plenty of Greek icons. This is not your father's Greektown. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Dining by the River |
300 River Place Detroit, MI 48207 United States +1 313 567 4400 http://www.rattlesnakeclub.com/ |
Master chef Jimmy Schmidt is well known around Detroit for his seafood and meat emporiums. His latest restaurant is a very open, airy and elegant space near the Detroit River (and despite the name, rattlesnake is not on the menu). Lake Ontario pickerel, prime porterhouse steak, perch with watercress sauce, swordfish, oysters and Caesar salad are among the many carefully prepared and presented menu items. The white chocolate ravioli is to die for. Huge flower arrangements and colorful paintings set off the oak tables and chairs in the main dining room. A porch area is also open for dining. Oldie But Goodie |
3401 Riopelle Street (Via Roma) Detroit, MI 48207 United States +1 313 831 5940 http://www.romacafe.com/ |
Detroit's oldest Italian restaurant, located in what used to be known as Little Italy, a neighborhood near the Eastern Market, has survived several cycles of neighborhood blight and revival. Its tuxedo-clad wait staff and fancy traditional Italian food have remained in place as the family business has passed down through generations. Old World charm seeps through the wood paneling in the 100-year-old house. The menu is large and the place is bustling, especially on weekend evenings when reservations are a must. Veal is the specialty here, but chicken can be substituted in most dishes. Homemade pastas complement the huge array of meat and vegetarian entrees. The homemade cannoli is a popular dessert. Quality seafood |
273 Pierce Street Detroit, MI 48009 United States +1 248 645 9123 |
A good place for lunch or dinner if you are lucky enough to find a seat, Streetside Seafood is a small, moderately priced restaurant with excellent food. Begin your meal with one of the many appetizers such as crab and avocado, or the soup of the day. The seafood entrees come from all over the world and are cooked in a variety of styles but always with a simple elegance that seeks to please without being overwhelming. Exposed brick and a bar that features gleaming copper highlight the decor. Review © 2007, Wcities |
