If you would like to try Altbier Dusseldorf has a lot of places to offer, particulary in the Altstadt! Beer fans who would like to sample local brews in a classic German pub setting should head for Zum Uerige, Im Goldenen Kessel and Im Füchschen. Other traditional pubs are Weinhaus Tante Anna, Zum Csikosz and the oldest of all, En De Canon.

You can find a modern, cool atmosphere in Op de Eck at Grabbeplatz or in many of the cafés along the Rhine. If you want to check your e-mail, hit the G@rden internet café, with great lattés.

If you crave a cosy café au lait during the day or a sociable evening out, there are many pleasant bars on Ratinger Straße, including Zum Goldenen Einhorn, Ohme Jupp, Zur Uel or Schlonz. On a warm summer night this street becomes a giant outdoor pub.

If you prefer sitting and enjoying the view, Burgplatz and the Rhine promenade are the best places - Goldener Ring has a nice beer garden and all of the cafés along the Rhine have great views of the river. But real river-lovers should aim for Rheintreue or Koller's Kahn, both are on boats on the Rhine, found just past the Oberkasseler Bridge.

If, after a long, exhausting day you fancy warm, literary surroundings, have a rest at Schnabelewobski, the house where Heinrich Heine, the famous Loreley-poet, was born. Or drown your ears in rock music at the Weißer Bär right nearby.

Theatre, Comedy, Music, and Dance

Culturally, Dusseldorf has plenty to offer: There's theater at the Schauspielhaus, opera and ballet at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, classical music at the Tonhalle, variety at the JUTA, political cabaret at the Kommödchen, boulevard theater at the Komödie, modern dance at the Tanzhaus NRW and ambitious puppet-theatre at the Dusseldorfer Marionettentheater. The Apollo Varieté beneath the Rheinknie-bridge is run by Roncalli, the famous circus.

Cinema

A bit of Cinema Paradiso atmosphere can be found at Cinema, Bambi, Metropol, Lichtburg, Black Box or Souterrain, also called Muggel. Not only do most of these cinemas have an old-fashioned décor, they show classic films, too. The big UFA Cineplexes at the main station and the harbour offer mainstream Hollywood films dubbed in German. If you want to see a film in the original language, look out for ones listed as OmU (original with German subtitles)

Live Music

Live jazz can be found at Dr. Jazz and at the Jazzschmiede. Buck Mulligans offers folk. Do you love 'old blue eyes'? Then catch the German Sinatra, live on stage at Frontpage. At Em Pöötzke the jazz band will play that tune for a 'Heiermann' - Dusseldorf slang for a five Mark coin.

The Phillipshalle hosts concerts by big names like Bryan Ferry or Lou Reed. The Zakk is a club venue for smaller concerts, often by local bands.

To find your way around you can get a map at the tourist info across from the main station (Hauptbahnhof), tickets can also be purchased at Heinersdorff, or just find a trendy-looking café or bar and pick up one of the free city-guides 'Biograph' or 'Coolibri' to find out what's on.

Clubs

If you want to go dancing there is the chic Mauer, Poco Loco (young crowd, often Spanish nights), Unique-Club (modern & alternative), Baby Love (more a bar than a club - so a bit cramped), Anacaonda Electric Lounge (techno & electro), Ratinger Hof (mostly rave) and Kulisse (fourty-somethings and German 'Schlager'-pop).

Dusseldorf's trendy professionals go to the brilliantly designed Banker's Boulevard (but don't forget your credit card). Checker's is where Claudia Schiffer was 'discovered' and Sam's, is another club close to Königsallee. The mk-2 club is a must for media types and design fans.

Tor 3 and the Stahlwerk are in an industrial area outside the center of town, and the ZAKK offers various theme discos, also for the over-thirties.

This fascinating building, located next to Oberkassel Bridge on the Rhine, used to be a planetarium; but the only evidence left of its former incarnation is the dome-shaped roof. The Tonhalle is now the city's premier concert hall and hosts classical, jazz, rock and pop concerts by top international acts. Readings and recitals take place in the rotunda.

Zollstraße 7

Dusseldorf, NRW 40213

Located in a side street close to the town hall, this rustic restaurant has been serving up traditional Rhineland specialities since the 17th century. Popular with shoppers and local politicians, guests can relax over a glass of altbier and local dishes like the herring platter and roast beef in mustard. Mussels are also served during the season (Nov-Feb). In the summer the leafy beer garden is the perfect place to relax after a stroll along the busy streets of the old town.

A paradise for Sinatra fans, this piano bar has been pulling in the crowds for nearly twenty years. Live music is played from Tuesday to Saturday. Frontpage's resident 'Frank Sinatra' (alias Harald Rehbock) and pianist H.G. Adam play classics like 'Strangers in the Night' and 'New York, New York' for punters in the 35-60 age range. The walls are decorated with autographs and old music magazines. Prices are fairly high and there is also an entrance fee.

This former factory in the south of Dusseldorf is known throughout the country. This is partly due to the big-name bands that perform here and partly due to the nightclub, which together with Stahlwerk and Zakk forms a kind of nightlife Bermuda triangle in Dusseldorf. As is fitting for this kind of establishment, a fast food bar provides ravers with the quick nourishment necessary to help them through the night.

Im Füchschen

Paradise for beer-lovers
Ratingerstraße 28
Altstadt
Dusseldorf, NRW 40213
Germany
+49 211 13 7470
A firm favorite in the old town, beer-lovers from all over the world congregate here to sample the local brew. Apart from the beer, Füchschen also offers hearty German food. No prizes for guessing what's on the menu: typical dishes like eisbein (leg of pork) with sauerkraut. The later it gets, the less likely you are to encounter a sober customer, which is hardly surprising considering the extreme drinkablility of the beer.

Königsallee

Designer boulevard
Königsallee
Dusseldorf, NRW 40212
Germany
When it was built in 1804, the 'Kö', as it is affectionately known to locals, was situated in a slightly run-down area on the edge of the city. As Dusseldorf grew, the street became more central and things really took off after a face-lift at the start of the 20th century. An underground station was opened, the pavements were widened and the street lamps, kiosks and telephone boxes were restored. Nowadays the boulevard is Dusseldorf's number one shopping street and has enhanced the city's reputation as being one of Europe's major fashion centres, but has also lent it a reputation for being somewhat snobbish.

Mauer

Basement club for night-owls
Ratinger Mauer 1
Dusseldorf, NRW 40213
Germany

For a cover charge, party-goers can dance till they drop on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Heading down a steep flight of stairs and along a barely-lit corridor, visitors will eventually end up in a dark room, packed with young, but not too young revellers. The DJ stands at his decks in the middle of the heaving masses, playing dance on Wednesdays, house and soul on Fridays, and party sounds on Saturdays. The 'cocktail lounge' is the perfect place to chill out and enjoy a cocktail, a beer or a soft drink.

Oberkassel Bridge

Oberkassel bridge
Düsseldorfer Straße
Dusseldorf, NRW
Germany
When the original Oberkassel bridge was destroyed during World War II, a temporary bridge was immediately built in its place. After the war, the decision was made to erect a completely new bridge, but it was impossible to pull the temporary bridge down first because of its immense importance to the Rhineland's transport system. With this in mind, the new bridge was built parallel to the old one, and was then used while the old bridge was dismantled. In April 1976, in front of tens of thousands of onlookers, the 12,000-tonne bridge was moved 50m downstream to the spot where the first bridge originally stood.

A long-term favorite with party-goers, the Ratinger Hof is a top venue for house and techno, attracting some of the best DJs in the country. The doormen are not too strict but do consider your attire carefully: go crazy rather than smart!

Sam's West

Most exclusive club in town
Königsallee 27
Innenstadt
Dusseldorf, NRW 40212
Germany
+49 211 32 8171
Sam's is an extremely swish nightclub for those with money to burn. A mineral water costs a whopping EUR 9! Even if you have got the wherewithal, you will still need to get past the doormen who are known for being extremely choosy. The interior is stylish and très chic, as is the clientele who patronises this establishment. Don't be surprised if you see a few famous faces grooving on the dance floor.

Steelworks

Let off steam in a huge venue
Ronsdorferstraße 134
Dusseldorf, NRW 40233
Germany
http://www.stahlwerk.de
Established in 1995 in an old steel works, Stahlwerk is, as you can probably guess, a huge venue which is perfect for letting off some steam on the weekend. Music-wise it is pretty mainstream, but quite a few theme parties take place from time to time, which provides a bit of variety. Stahlwerk is also a venue for live gigs and comedy shows. All in all, the club is extremely popular with young people.

This tiny, atmospheric club in the old town enjoys cult status among young locals. The smoky, seedy rooms are divided up into intimate little booths. DJ's entertain the weekend crowds with an assortment of acid jazz, house and funk. Weekdays feature special events like concerts and theme parties. Drinks are reasonably inexpensive as far as club prices go.

Looking back at history that spans 400 years, this old town bar serves up high quality regional dishes in a quaint historical environment. Those who find themselves in Tante Anna for the first time should sample the set meals. In the evenings customers are faced with the torturous choice between a vegetarian, regional or gourmet menu. The choice is equally difficult when it comes to the wine, as the list contains over 100 different varieties!

Zakk is regarded as being a touch on the alternative side, probably because of the huge variety of events it hosts, including poetry recitals, concerts, interactive theatre and political debates. The complex also includes an Internet café, beer garden and a café with a cheap and plentiful menu. But it is on the weekend that Zakk really gets kicking. Club nights and special parties attract the masses, and with something for everyone, the swarm of visitors is accordingly colorful.
