Stockbridge cool and folk nights |
72-78 St Stephen Street Edinburgh EH3 5AQ United Kingdom +44 131 225 2858 |
This basement pub is on Stockbridge's coolest street, otherwise lined with antique and junk stores. The ambiance is definitely student new town chic. A coal-effect fire and comfy furnishings give the three rooms a homely feel. There is an informal folk music session on Thursday nights - check the press or venue for the latest details. Elegant multi-purpose halls |
George Street Edinburgh EH2 2LR United Kingdom +44 131 220 4348 |
The Assembly Rooms are run by the City of Edinburgh Council and are let for a variety of uses, including fashion shows, craft fairs, concerts and lectures. This evocative setting is also a major Fringe Festival venue, hosting some of Britain's best stand-up comedians and theater groups. There are three fine sections in this impressive building. The Music Hall is the largest, featuring an ornate domed ceiling and an imposing chandelier, with the smallest and most intimate being the split-level Supper Room, which has wonderful parquet flooring. An 18th century Ballroom has a huge mirror and elegant drawing rooms. Check the venue and the local press for opening times and admission prices, which vary according to event. Indie rock, dance and pop scenes |
28 North Bridge Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1JW United Kingdom +44 131 225 8382 |
The Attic is a small venue and a favorite with students for its live indie rock, retro-pop and dance music. Gigs can range from heavy rock/metal outfits to garage punk, to the more mellow end of the folk/country spectrum. It is intimate, atmospheric and the bar is not pricey. Club nights vary from hard house and trance (Sleep) to mainstream chart music (Mad on Sundays). Representing the alternative/hardcore scene is Dysfunction, which blasts out a fortnightly industrial and nu metal fix to the faithful. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vaulted cellars and musical evenings |
212 Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1NQ United Kingdom +44 131 556 3254 |
This old establishment was built in the late 18th century and was frequented by Robert Louis Stevenson. Its vaulted cellars, wooden casks, mahogany gantry and stone features gives it an old-world charm. This pub has a comfy, pipe 'n' slippers feel to it during the daytime - something it manages despite being a large place. In the evenings it bursts into life with a youthful crowd. There are local bands on twice a week — jazz or soul on Wednesdays, and rock on Saturdays. The large selection of beers and whiskies ensures that when the bands aren't playing, it's always humming with the clink of glasses and the sound of chatter. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Homely pub |
81-85 Broughton Street Edinburgh EH1 3RJ United Kingdom +44 131 557 0546 |
Half-way down trendy Broughton Street is the traditional facade of the Barony Bar. There is a large open space inside and lots of light from windows on two sides. It has stacks of guest ales, speciality bottled beers and cider as well as the usual favourites on tap. Ask one of the chirpy staff for the basic but excellent bar menu. Take your pick from nachos, wraps, burgers, and sausages and mash. In the winter, a blazing coal fire and the old wooden interior make this local feel homely. There is live rock and blues music from 6pm on Sundays - check for details of the upcoming bands to appear. Long may it resist the tide of modern theme pubs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live pop music and a party atmosphere |
Fountain Park, Dundee Street Edinburgh EH11 1AW United Kingdom +44 131 228 5885 |
Situated towards the west of the city centre, this is a noisy, occasionally hectic bar that features regular live music events. It's a popular place with a mixed age range. Musical acts tend to be from the extremely pop end of the spectrum - names such as Jason Donovan and Caprice really say it all. Drinks promotions and a loyal clientele of rowdy local office groups make for a lively night out and if you really want to impress, there's also a VIP suite which can sometimes be reserved. Most evenings see acts starting at about 9p and entrance is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mansfield Place Church East London Street Edinburgh EH7 4BH United Kingdom +44 131 546 7865 |
Before we get confused, let's get one thing straight—the word café is a complete misnomer. Café Graffiti is in fact an arts and live music venue. Theater makes the odd appearance whilst world music is a frequent feature. Hogmanay and Christmas see special events and a regular Ceilidh slot. Club nights include Big Beat (one Sa every month), Lizard Lounge (the other three Sa) and Midnight Blue (F). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Before the birth of the Festival Theatre, opera seemed to have no real home in the Scottish capital. Several plans for an Opera House were suggested, shelved and eventually rejected. Instead of constructing anew, the decision was finally taken to refurbish and revamp the old Empire Theatre, and in the summer of 1994 a new, glass-fronted Festival Theatre was opened. The large stages are now graced by a variety of performances, from ballet and opera to drama and cabaret. During the Edinburgh International Festival, the theatre hosts many prestigious concerts. The summer Proms season with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is another annual highlight. Prices vary so call for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Taking a cue from the Edinburgh People's Festival 1951-54, the Communication Workers Union conducts this festival, which is a celebration of various art forms ranging from music and films to the performing arts. Clearly the motto of the organizers seems to be people-inspired since the events and performances are held in places where the masses can enjoy them as much as the so-called upper elite. It is a celebration of art "for the people, by the people". Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Liquid Room is located in the dark depths of Victoria Street, purveyor of all things dance and the occasional indie and rock act. As a live music venue, it sifts out the ropier local bands and offers up the only the best. The odd big name also pops up from time to time, and it is a pleasantly intimate venue for a gig. As a nightclub, it flirts with a housey image while remaining mostly mainstream. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This building was designed by William Burn in the 1820s in the neoclassical style for the John Watson School. Since 1984 it has housed a magnificent art collection of which the city is justly proud. On the ground floor there are special exhibition rooms and displays from the permanent collection. The collection at National Portrait Gallery traces the history of Scotland through the portraiture of its pioneers, poets, philosophers, rebels and royalty. There is the chance to stare into the faces and read through the lines of Bonny Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots. Scotland's modern-day media monarchy and heroes are immortalized in portraits of novelist Irvine Welsh, dancer Moira Shearer, fashion-guru Jean Muir and footballer Danny McGrain amongst others. Also represented are works of some international greats, including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Rodin. Contemporary art is also exhibited and the growing National Photography Collection includes the ground breaking work of Hill and Adamson. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Celtic music and cosy snugs |

This Irish theme pub isn't as overtly fake as some are today. The decor is all oak wood and salvaged pieces of curious junk. Try some of the chunky portions of hearty fare and watch the place fill up with a mixture of tourists, students and locals. Stuck out on its own amidst the Georgian crescents of the New Town, this gallery space is a wonderful place to wander around. It is big enough for huge photographic works, and intimate enough for displays of smaller prints.
