Housed in a University Halls of Residence for the busy summer months of July and August, this hostel provides Edinburgh visitors with budget single-room accommodation. As the name suggests, its location is an ideal base to explore the city and is worth considering if attending the Edinburgh International Festival. It is clean and there are adequate amenities, including a self-catering kitchen and laundry facilities. There's no need to bring a sheet or sleeping bag as all linen is provided. It may not have the charm and character of other hostels but it at least gives the residents a secure, personal space free from dormitory woes like the orchestra of snorers and late arrivals rummaging in rucksacks.

Five-star luxury suites in the west end
7 Rothesay Terrace
Edinburgh EH3 7RY
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 3380
This is an exquisite and discreet Georgian mansion block on a leafy crescent in the heart of the residential west end. From the outside, you'd never guess it was a hotel (no prominent sign to indicate such) and in fact, it's much more like a series of serviced apartments, each differing in decor but alike in their opulence. The large bay window in the reception will give you a taste of the available views - over the Dean Village and the Water of Leith towards the majestic Holy Trinity church and Stockbridge beyond.

The Traveler Magazine said that The Glasshouse is the hippest place to rest your head, when in Scotland. Don't get confused when the concierge lists the various names of scotch whisky - he's not guiding you through the bar menu, but actually listing out the names of the various suites. Taking full advantage of its location, the hotel offers beautiful views of the city. What better way to view Firth of Forth or Calton Hill than within the comforts of your own room! A better option would be a room with a terrace, where you can always go for a breath of fresh air. There are various packages available - if you're on your honeymoon, you would want to opt for the 'Love is in the air' suite, which comes with a Sauna Jacuzzi-King Bed. Enjoy your stay!

Opened in 1843 by Sir Robert Cranston, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Old Waverley is one of the best-known and most central hotels in Edinburgh. The present impressive facade dates from 1883 and looks onto Princes Street Gardens. It has all the usual modern conveniences with a dose of traditional character, but really it's the views that inspire here - Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument can be admired from many of the rooms. The Waverley Lounge bar is a pleasant place to sip cocktails while savoring the scene outside. Cranston's Restaurant serves up a variety of Scottish-Euro fare for modest prices.

Located towards the east end of the New Town, opposite St Paul & St George's Church, the Osbourne occupies a Georgian block that incorporates the Shelbourne Lounge Bar. There's a cozy, Victorian atmosphere inside and staff are very welcoming. Choose from one of three types of pleasantly presented rooms: a simple room with basin, a larger one with en suite bathroom or a spacious "superior" with an enticing four poster bed. A lift is available to all four floors.

Peacocks strut their stuff in front of this 17th century mansion, which became a hotel in 1959. It is almost at the foot of Arthur's Seat and is surrounded by Holyrood Park. A recent refurbishment has extended the building and added 26 luxury bedrooms. The grandeur of the architectural features is complimented by period portraits and furnishings. The Tapestry Room holds a special charm - the man who designed its ceiling, Sir William Adam, is also responsible for the decorated ceilings in the Holyroodhouse Palace. The Leather Room's walls are adorned with exquisite red Spanish hide. For golf enthusiasts, there is an 18-hole course next door.

Favoured by the business fraternity and the occasional monarch, the Sheraton has been brimming with visitors since its opening in 1985. Its central location near the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and Edinburgh Castle is just one reason for its popularity. Refurbishment in 1993 married the existing modernity to a more Scottish ambience. The results are stunning, from the sleek and sunlit chrome and glass restaurant to the opulent decor of the guest rooms. Dark wood, leather and marble compliment sweeping staircases and grand architectural features.
