Stockbridge cool and folk nights
72-78 St Stephen Street
Edinburgh EH3 5AQ
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 2858
This basement pub is on Stockbridge's coolest street, otherwise lined with antique and junk stores. The ambiance is definitely student new town chic. A coal-effect fire and comfy furnishings give the three rooms a homely feel. There is an informal folk music session on Thursday nights - check the press or venue for the latest details.

Assembly Rooms Theatre

Elegant multi-purpose halls
George Street
Edinburgh EH2 2LR
United Kingdom
+44 131 220 4348
The Assembly Rooms are run by the City of Edinburgh Council and are let for a variety of uses, including fashion shows, craft fairs, concerts and lectures. This evocative setting is also a major Fringe Festival venue, hosting some of Britain's best stand-up comedians and theater groups. There are three fine sections in this impressive building. The Music Hall is the largest, featuring an ornate domed ceiling and an imposing chandelier, with the smallest and most intimate being the split-level Supper Room, which has wonderful parquet flooring. An 18th century Ballroom has a huge mirror and elegant drawing rooms. Check the venue and the local press for opening times and admission prices, which vary according to event.

Attic

Indie rock, dance and pop scenes
28 North Bridge
Cowgate
Edinburgh EH1 1JW
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 8382
The Attic is a small venue and a favorite with students for its live indie rock, retro-pop and dance music. Gigs can range from heavy rock/metal outfits to garage punk, to the more mellow end of the folk/country spectrum. It is intimate, atmospheric and the bar is not pricey. Club nights vary from hard house and trance (Sleep) to mainstream chart music (Mad on Sundays). Representing the alternative/hardcore scene is Dysfunction, which blasts out a fortnightly industrial and nu metal fix to the faithful.

Bannerman's

Vaulted cellars and musical evenings
212 Cowgate
Edinburgh EH1 1NQ
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 3254
This old establishment was built in the late 18th century and was frequented by Robert Louis Stevenson. Its vaulted cellars, wooden casks, mahogany gantry and stone features gives it an old-world charm. This pub has a comfy, pipe 'n' slippers feel to it during the daytime - something it manages despite being a large place. In the evenings it bursts into life with a youthful crowd. There are local bands on twice a week — jazz or soul on Wednesdays, and rock on Saturdays. The large selection of beers and whiskies ensures that when the bands aren't playing, it's always humming with the clink of glasses and the sound of chatter.

Barony Bar

Homely pub
81-85 Broughton Street
Edinburgh EH1 3RJ
United Kingdom
+44 131 557 0546
Half-way down trendy Broughton Street is the traditional facade of the Barony Bar. There is a large open space inside and lots of light from windows on two sides. It has stacks of guest ales, speciality bottled beers and cider as well as the usual favourites on tap. Ask one of the chirpy staff for the basic but excellent bar menu. Take your pick from nachos, wraps, burgers, and sausages and mash. In the winter, a blazing coal fire and the old wooden interior make this local feel homely. There is live rock and blues music from 6pm on Sundays - check for details of the upcoming bands to appear. Long may it resist the tide of modern theme pubs.

Brannigan's

Live pop music and a party atmosphere
Fountain Park, Dundee Street
Edinburgh EH11 1AW
United Kingdom
+44 131 228 5885
Situated towards the west of the city centre, this is a noisy, occasionally hectic bar that features regular live music events. It's a popular place with a mixed age range. Musical acts tend to be from the extremely pop end of the spectrum - names such as Jason Donovan and Caprice really say it all. Drinks promotions and a loyal clientele of rowdy local office groups make for a lively night out and if you really want to impress, there's also a VIP suite which can sometimes be reserved. Most evenings see acts starting at about 9p and entrance is free.

Before we get confused, let's get one thing straight—the word café is a complete misnomer. Café Graffiti is in fact an arts and live music venue. Theater makes the odd appearance whilst world music is a frequent feature. Hogmanay and Christmas see special events and a regular Ceilidh slot. Club nights include Big Beat (one Sa every month), Lizard Lounge (the other three Sa) and Midnight Blue (F).

This former hospital building received an astonishing architectural make-over and opened with entire floors removed to make way for enormous sculptures - it now holds Eduardo Paolozzi's gifts to the nation. There is an impressive collection of Dada and Surrealist art here, and a recreation of Paolozzi's chaotic London studio workshop. Check for details of the latest exhibition to showcase the brashest and best of the UK's contemporary art scene - the Dean recently took part in the British Art Show. Established in 1867, the Edinburgh Crystal Company (actually 10 miles from the city center on the A701) has worked to develop the glass-making traditions brought to the city by the Venetians in the 17th Century. In a large modern multi-complex, visitors can take a guided tour of the whole process - demonstrating blowing, moulding, trimming and engraving - with the option (if you book ahead) to try glassblowing and cutting yourself. Wares from the craftsmen at the center can be purchased from the First Quality Crystal Shop. There's also a factory shop (selling seconds at discounted prices), a gift shop (with pottery and porcelain), and a café.

Before the birth of the Festival Theatre, opera seemed to have no real home in the Scottish capital. Several plans for an Opera House were suggested, shelved and eventually rejected. Instead of constructing anew, the decision was finally taken to refurbish and revamp the old Empire Theatre, and in the summer of 1994 a new, glass-fronted Festival Theatre was opened. The large stages are now graced by a variety of performances, from ballet and opera to drama and cabaret. During the Edinburgh International Festival, the theatre hosts many prestigious concerts. The summer Proms season with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is another annual highlight. Prices vary so call for details.

Taking a cue from the Edinburgh People's Festival 1951-54, the Communication Workers Union conducts this festival, which is a celebration of various art forms ranging from music and films to the performing arts. Clearly the motto of the organizers seems to be people-inspired since the events and performances are held in places where the masses can enjoy them as much as the so-called upper elite. It is a celebration of art "for the people, by the people".

The only alternative to The Stand comedy venue, this Irish theme bar offers stand-up on a Friday night. It's free, as you're presumably buying from the bar, and the regular compere is Reg "Voodoo" Anderson. Starting around 8p.

Stand Comedy Club

Raw talent and raucous laughter
5 York Place
Edinburgh EH1 3EB
United Kingdom
+44 131 558 7272
http://www.thestand.co.uk/
Come here for comedy, seven days a week, from some of Britain's best-known comedians, alongside some lesser known names and a variety of up and coming (and terrified) hopefuls. This popular venue frequently offers other attractions like comedy quizzes, as well as a full program of Fringe Festival performances. They also run sporadic events such as "Whose Lunch Is It Anyway" where the show itself comes free with a meal or drinks. It is rowdy but good-natured and gets busy on weekends as it holds only 160 bodies, so book early.

Once an exclusively photographic gallery, Stills has recently been converted to hold a wider range of contemporary art. Digital-imagery labs and a bookshop complete the complex. This gallery is vibrant and fun to visit; artists shown include Cornelia Parker and Tracy Emin.

Torrance Gallery

New fine art
36 Dundas Street
Edinburgh EH3 6JN
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 6366
The so-called new "Scottish boys" of the painting world are favourites of this gallery; artists whose work epitomises a contemporary and challenging approach to "fine art" using paint as their chosen medium. Set in an area where galleries face stiff competition from one another, this one draws work from a wide range of established and new names. Most work on sale is reasonably priced and sometimes it's possible to pick up a real bargain. Solo and group exhibitions are hosted here and they occasionally feature work from recent graduates. This is always worth a look, or ring for details of current shows. Admission: is free.

The Traverse is a haven for new writers and lesser-known touring companies. As such, the clientele leans toward the left-field hip end of the theatre-going spectrum - they especially love to hang-out at the Traverse Bar Cafe. Drama, dance and comedy all regularly feature on the theatre's program.

Tron Ceilidh House

Jazz Folk
9 Hunter Square
Edinburgh EH1 1QW
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 0931
This is an informal Jazz & Folk music haven. These music genres may not be usual bed-fellows, yet they lie together quite comfortably across the four levels of this bar. There are often informal sessions, so be prepared to spring on-stage at any given moment and give it some welly. There's a varied menu here too, from the traditional to the distinctly Cajun - it's all good stuff and good value. Upstairs is the Jazz cafe - which serves varied fare with a dash of style. Check listings for further details on gigs and club nights.

The Sunday Service begins at 11a and is followed by a get-together over coffee at noon. Classical music lovers should prick their ears up as St Marks has recitals and concerts throughout the year. It also stages an eclectic program during the Edinburgh International Festival. Enjoy the grand surroundings whilst nibbling biscuits and sipping coffee - refreshments are often provided in the interval. Amongst the acts that regularly appear is the Squair Mile Consort of Viols who deliver chamber music composed for the Viola da Gamba (viol) from the 16th and 17th centuries. Venue

Atmospheric old-school concert and club venue
15 Calton Road
Edinburgh EH8 8DL
United Kingdom
+44 131 557 3073
This is a good old-fashioned rock venue and is host to an eclectic mix of club nights. It is the antithesis to the so-called "superclubs" and is reassuringly grimy around the edges. Its size is such that the smaller touring bands don't rattle around, whilst allowing the bigger names to enjoy a more intimate performance, which is rare in these days of huge arenas and concert halls. Local bands get a look-in too, there are talent showcases to tempt the curious. Check out the latest listings for the various club nights, which include evenings of rock, house, techno, trance, drum and bass, and more besides.
