Brannigan's

Live pop music and a party atmosphere
Fountain Park, Dundee Street
Edinburgh EH11 1AW
United Kingdom
+44 131 228 5885
Situated towards the west of the city centre, this is a noisy, occasionally hectic bar that features regular live music events. It's a popular place with a mixed age range. Musical acts tend to be from the extremely pop end of the spectrum - names such as Jason Donovan and Caprice really say it all. Drinks promotions and a loyal clientele of rowdy local office groups make for a lively night out and if you really want to impress, there's also a VIP suite which can sometimes be reserved. Most evenings see acts starting at about 9p and entrance is free.

Music for the noisy generation
104 West Port
Edinburgh EH3 9DN
United Kingdom
+44 131 229 4341
Check out this venue if you appreciate the hidden talents of more obscure bands. Squeeze into the tight space and slam and mosh to the sounds. Other than hosting some mediocre acts, this is also one of the places to hear some of the area's most exciting new musical efforts. Be prepared for a loud, sticky and dark evening.

Family-run cinema
18 Newbattle Terrace
Morningside
Edinburgh EH10 4RT
United Kingdom
+44 131 447 4771
This family-run cinema has a very cosy feel, entirely in keeping with the status of its owners. Enter the evocative 1930s art deco interior and choose between the four screens. Movies tend towards family flicks, but you will find the odd "18" cropping up on the programme. Light bites and refreshments are on sale in the cafe until the end of play.

Hidden behind the Usher Hall and the Traverse Theatre, these two sister galleries are recent additions to Edinburgh's burgeoning art scene - and very smart they are too. The smaller of the two galleries lends itself well to exhibitions of paintings, whilst the larger is great for mixed shows. The ethos is predominately contemporary, with local and new artists featured in changing exhibitions. All of these items are for sale. It is not open permanently - check that there's a show on before arranging a visit. Admission: is free.
