Charming guest house in an old manse |
94 Pilrig Street Edinburgh EH6 5AY United Kingdom +44 131 554 3377 |
Taking its name from a wee village up in the north of the country, this stately Georgian guest house, built originally in 1857 as a church manse, gives visitors a subtle and refined taste of Scotland. It is found on the fringes of the city centre - across the road from the vast Pilrig Park, which lends it an atmosphere of calm and peace. The large rooms are finely decorated with antiques and traditionally flowered fabrics offset by expansive windows, which make the rooms airy and comfortable. Cheap and funky |
48-50 Constitution Street Leith Edinburgh EH6 6RS United Kingdom +44 131 467 7527 |
Popular since it first opened in the mid 1990s, this young and vibrant bar offers a particularly good range of beers. There is also a pleasant garden for the days when you want a little fresh air with your alcohol and the bar sometimes hosts live music nights from mainly local bands. It is small and bustling and has a great atmosphere, situated as it is near the attractive dockland area. Bar Java is a great place to be (or stay - Bed and Breakfast is available) especially during the Edinburgh International Festival and Hogmanay, when there's always an interesting crowd. West end exclusivity |
35 Drumsheugh Gardens (West End) Edinburgh EH3 7RN United Kingdom +44 131 226 6050 |
This renovated town house hotel is well known for its comfort and elegant style. Art deco furniture and splashes of colour contrast with the original Victorian architecture, giving the building a dynamic, modern edge. Many rooms contain new work by Scottish artists and rear rooms offer wonderful views across the Firth of Forth. The oak-panelled contemporary surroundings of The Bonham restaurant compliment the beautifully prepared European influenced dishes served. All this quality, allied with state-of-the-art technology in every room, has led to a "coolest hotel" award from Conde Nast Travellers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Budget summer stay in single rooms |
11/12/07 Robertson's Close Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1LY United Kingdom +44 131 556 5566 http://www.syha.org.uk/ |
Housed in a University Halls of Residence for the busy summer months of July and August, this hostel provides Edinburgh visitors with budget single-room accommodation. As the name suggests, its location is an ideal base to explore the city and is worth considering if attending the Edinburgh International Festival. It is clean and there are adequate amenities, including a self-catering kitchen and laundry facilities. There's no need to bring a sheet or sleeping bag as all linen is provided. It may not have the charm and character of other hostels but it at least gives the residents a secure, personal space free from dormitory woes like the orchestra of snorers and late arrivals rummaging in rucksacks.
