The height of luxury |
1 Princes Street Edinburgh EH2 2EQ United Kingdom +44 (0)131 556 2414 http://www.thebalmoralhotel.com |
This splendid building was initially built in 1902, but has been completely refurbished by its new owners, Rocco Forte. The results are impressive, an excellent blend of Edwardian character with thoroughly modern amenities. Striking an imposing figure, it dominates the east end of Princes Street, affording superb views of the Castle, Gardens and Old Town and is handily situated beside Waverley Station. As one of the leading exclusive hotels in the world, expect great variations in rates according to the season. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This imposing former bank edifice on The Royal Mile was built in 1923, converted into a hotel in the 1960's and wonderfully refurbished in 1998. Each of the nine sumptuous rooms celebrate the impact of a famous Scot, including James Watt, Robert Burns, Rennie Mackintosh and Robert Louis Stevenson. On the ground floor, the fine atmosphere of Logie Baird's invites the public to turn off their televisions and do something less boring instead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

West end exclusivity |
35 Drumsheugh Gardens (West End) Edinburgh EH3 7RN United Kingdom +44 131 226 6050 |
This renovated town house hotel is well known for its comfort and elegant style. Art deco furniture and splashes of colour contrast with the original Victorian architecture, giving the building a dynamic, modern edge. Many rooms contain new work by Scottish artists and rear rooms offer wonderful views across the Firth of Forth. The oak-panelled contemporary surroundings of The Bonham restaurant compliment the beautifully prepared European influenced dishes served. All this quality, allied with state-of-the-art technology in every room, has led to a "coolest hotel" award from Conde Nast Travellers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Budget summer stay in single rooms |
11/12/07 Robertson's Close Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1LY United Kingdom +44 131 556 5566 http://www.syha.org.uk/ |
Housed in a University Halls of Residence for the busy summer months of July and August, this hostel provides Edinburgh visitors with budget single-room accommodation. As the name suggests, its location is an ideal base to explore the city and is worth considering if attending the Edinburgh International Festival. It is clean and there are adequate amenities, including a self-catering kitchen and laundry facilities. There's no need to bring a sheet or sleeping bag as all linen is provided. It may not have the charm and character of other hostels but it at least gives the residents a secure, personal space free from dormitory woes like the orchestra of snorers and late arrivals rummaging in rucksacks. Five-star luxury suites in the west end |
7 Rothesay Terrace Edinburgh EH3 7RY United Kingdom +44 131 226 3380 |
This is an exquisite and discreet Georgian mansion block on a leafy crescent in the heart of the residential west end. From the outside, you'd never guess it was a hotel (no prominent sign to indicate such) and in fact, it's much more like a series of serviced apartments, each differing in decor but alike in their opulence. The large bay window in the reception will give you a taste of the available views - over the Dean Village and the Water of Leith towards the majestic Holy Trinity church and Stockbridge beyond. 43 Princes Street Edinburgh EH2 2BY United Kingdom +44 131 556 4648 |
Opened in 1843 by Sir Robert Cranston, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Old Waverley is one of the best-known and most central hotels in Edinburgh. The present impressive facade dates from 1883 and looks onto Princes Street Gardens. It has all the usual modern conveniences with a dose of traditional character, but really it's the views that inspire here - Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument can be admired from many of the rooms. The Waverley Lounge bar is a pleasant place to sip cocktails while savoring the scene outside. Cranston's Restaurant serves up a variety of Scottish-Euro fare for modest prices.
