Influential Scots theme |
1 South Bridge Edinburgh EH1 1LL United Kingdom +44 131 556 9043 http://www.bankhotel.activehot... |
This imposing former bank edifice on The Royal Mile was built in 1923, converted into a hotel in the 1960's and wonderfully refurbished in 1998. Each of the nine sumptuous rooms celebrate the impact of a famous Scot, including James Watt, Robert Burns, Rennie Mackintosh and Robert Louis Stevenson. On the ground floor, the fine atmosphere of Logie Baird's invites the public to turn off their televisions and do something less boring instead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Budget summer stay in single rooms |
11/12/07 Robertson's Close Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1LY United Kingdom +44 131 556 5566 http://www.syha.org.uk/ |
Housed in a University Halls of Residence for the busy summer months of July and August, this hostel provides Edinburgh visitors with budget single-room accommodation. As the name suggests, its location is an ideal base to explore the city and is worth considering if attending the Edinburgh International Festival. It is clean and there are adequate amenities, including a self-catering kitchen and laundry facilities. There's no need to bring a sheet or sleeping bag as all linen is provided. It may not have the charm and character of other hostels but it at least gives the residents a secure, personal space free from dormitory woes like the orchestra of snorers and late arrivals rummaging in rucksacks. Budget favourite |
8 Blackfriars Street Edinburgh EH1 1SW United Kingdom +44 131 557 3984 |
It's just off the High Street, superbly central and very much a backpacker establishment - in fact it's the oldest and most popular in Edinburgh, with an easygoing atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. Save money on restaurant bills and make your own meals in the communal kitchen. If you don't want to cook, splash out a mere GPB2 on breakfast. Evening meals can be arranged if there is suitable demand. The hostel is open 24 hours daily. Review © 2007, Wcities |

17th century grandeur |
Prestfield Road Edinburgh EH16 5UT United Kingdom +44 131 668 3346 |
Peacocks strut their stuff in front of this 17th century mansion, which became a hotel in 1959. It is almost at the foot of Arthur's Seat and is surrounded by Holyrood Park. A recent refurbishment has extended the building and added 26 luxury bedrooms. The grandeur of the architectural features is complimented by period portraits and furnishings. The Tapestry Room holds a special charm - the man who designed its ceiling, Sir William Adam, is also responsible for the decorated ceilings in the Holyroodhouse Palace. The Leather Room's walls are adorned with exquisite red Spanish hide. For golf enthusiasts, there is an 18-hole course next door. Review © 2007, Wcities |
