Afton Hotel

West End Georgian
6 Grosvenor Crescent
Edinburgh EH12 5EP
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 7033
An intimate, family-run Georgian hotel, the Afton is very close to Haymarket Station and overlooks private gardens (to which guests have access). Set in the elegant surroundings of Grosvenor Crescent and with St Mary's Cathedral nearby, this is an ideal central base for those seeking respite from the tourist throng. Marvel at the grand staircase which is made bright and dramatic by the classical columns that surround it and natural light that streams in from above.

This tranquil Old Town hotel is located in the semi-pedestrian café zone in the Grassmarket, with the shadow of Edinburgh Castle looming immediately overhead. All the spacious rooms have at least one double bed, an en suite bathroom and excellent facilities. Breathtaking views and mouth-watering contemporary Scottish cuisine are available on the rooftop at The Heights restaurant.

A converted church with its original belltower, this superb hostel is to be found in the west end where it overlooks the Dean Village. A funky, cosy atmosphere prevails, despite the building's original purpose. There is a licensed residents' lounge, a pool table and darts board amongst the many entertainments and amenities on offer. In the summer, barbecues are held in the garden and a 24 hour reception welcomes late arrivals. For those seeking an alternative to dormitory sleeping, there are private rooms available. Overall, this is a well-maintained and certainly unique place to stay.

A newish hostel on the backpacking scene offering dormitory accommodation, situated just off the Royal Mile on the south side of Edinburgh Castle. This could well be the best-equipped hostel in the city. If the weather is inclement there are lots of things to do in the lounge area: choose a board game, dabble in the art of ping-pong or take a cue on the pool table.

Edinburgh Residence

Five-star luxury suites in the west end
7 Rothesay Terrace
Edinburgh EH3 7RY
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 3380
This is an exquisite and discreet Georgian mansion block on a leafy crescent in the heart of the residential west end. From the outside, you'd never guess it was a hotel (no prominent sign to indicate such) and in fact, it's much more like a series of serviced apartments, each differing in decor but alike in their opulence. The large bay window in the reception will give you a taste of the available views - over the Dean Village and the Water of Leith towards the majestic Holy Trinity church and Stockbridge beyond.

Warm Victorian ambience

Edinburgh EH3 7RY
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 5084

This glamorous and historic Victorian establishment in the quiet West End has retained most of the original interior decor including ornate wooden panelling and marble fireplaces. It was built in 1883 for John Ritchie Findlay, founder of The Scotsman newspaper and has been recently refurbished. The elegant galleried library doubles as one of the four auspicious conference rooms. The grand dining room commands a fine view over the Dean Village. An intimate and comfortable bar has fine Chesterfield sofas to sink into. Each comfortable en suite bedroom faces either the rolling landscape of Fife or the splendour of Edinburgh Castle.

Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa

Deluxe central hotel
1 Festival Square
Edinburgh EH3 9SR
United Kingdom
+44 131 229 9131
http://www.sheraton.com/
Favoured by the business fraternity and the occasional monarch, the Sheraton has been brimming with visitors since its opening in 1985. Its central location near the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and Edinburgh Castle is just one reason for its popularity. Refurbishment in 1993 married the existing modernity to a more Scottish ambience. The results are stunning, from the sleek and sunlit chrome and glass restaurant to the opulent decor of the guest rooms. Dark wood, leather and marble compliment sweeping staircases and grand architectural features.
