The Courtyard Bar & Brasserie in Leith suits both your purse and palate. It's perfect for a date with your sweetheart, but it also goes well for a business lunch or a drink. The brasserie caters to romantic dinners, while the conservatory serves the best of coffee and snacks. And, yes, there is a courtyard too, with floodlights and outdoor heating facilities, best for a British meal listening to strains of jazz.

+44 131 556 8407 Adjacent to the dining room at Haldane's there's a walled garden and patio, which offers a calming view and a fine place sit out in when it's warm. The food tends to be locally sourced, but the contemporary menu steps outside the boundaries of traditional fare. A two-course set lunch is quite reasonably priced, whilst dinner is exclusively a la carte. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. The dining room itself is light and airy - pleasingly uncomplicated - with an open fire. All in all, it's a very pleasant place to dine.

They have a good reputation amongst fish lovers and also make delicious and filling crepes, both sweet and savoury. If you're looking for a bistro-style eatery serving generous portions, then this Scottish-French hybrid will suit you down to the ground. There's a separate room for non-smokers and if it's sunny you can sit on the pretty terrace outside.

It's a lively restaurant, full of dark-wood character and movement, yet it manages to be the kind of place in which you can unwind as everything happens around you. There's a pontoon outside which is opened for summer dining and affords splendid views of the docks. Savor the marine flavors of a primarily fishy menu or plump for a rump or sirloin steak. Vegetarians are catered for with a good choice of dishes. Continue the pleasurable experience with a visit to the characterful bar area.

This is an Edinburgh institution set in one of the best locations in town, a short distance from the looming Edinburgh Castle. Summer allows for idyllic al fresco dining in the downstairs Secret Garden. The food has won many coveted awards and deservingly so. To enjoy the Witchery experience for a knock-down price, ask for the light lunch or theatre supper menu.
