Edinburgh EH1 3EB
United Kingdom
+44 (0)131 557 9899
http://www.9cellars.co.uk/
Chef Thakur of the 9 Cellars Restaurant & Bar proudly displays his achievements on one of its walls. With it's minimalist decor, the only promise 9 Cellars makes is to offer wonderful vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian dishes. Balti dishes are served cold and it will take you all your strength to break the naan bread. However, the snacks and pre-theatre set meals are definitely worth trying—special mention to the mouth-watering samosas and chutneys. Take a call.

Atrium

Contemporary cuisine with a Scottish twist
10 Cambridge Street
Edinburgh EH1 2ED
United Kingdom
+44 131 228 8882
Renowned for excellence, The Atrium has certainly made its culinary mark on Edinburgh. The decor lands somewhere between African rusticity and minimalist chic. Rough-hewn tables and autumnal colours are presented with a simple elegance which works very well. The cuisine is inventive, drawing particularly on Mediterranean and Scottish influences, all wrapped up in contemporary sophistication. There is an emphasis on fish and vegetables, and a love of hybrid dishes - traditional Scottish foods are given a modern twist. Of particular note is the extensive and well-thought-out wine list, including many varieties which are available by the glass. There are also pages dedicated to sherries and ports. This is a great dining experience.

Once you have docked and settled in, order the Tandoori Lamb Chops or the Macher Bhorta, which start the curry spice engine roaring! Then move on to the traditional Sri Lankan fare with Chicken Ceylon or the Dhaba Murgh, which is roasted in a charcoal oven to get the crispy crunchy texture! Vegetarians may revel in the several delicious Paneer (cottage cheese) dishes, Saag Paneer Malai being one of them. Keep the spice-o-meter going, or switch to the Asian sweets to tone down the zing!

Cafe St Honore

A Parisian affair
34 Thistle Street Lane
Edinburgh EH2 1EA
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 2211
Café St Honoré offers diners all the cheery and exciting elements of eating French. Thanks to a décor which recreates the look of a Parisian brasserie and food which exudes French chic, this place has retained a loyal following. If your conscience will give you a day off, indulge in a yummy, but waist-expanding dessert. The food is suitably French: rich and sumptuous, and good enough to appear in many a good food guide. The wine list is short, but closer inspection reveals many gems. By day this is a besuited, city establishment. By evening it's a romantic, candle-lit kind of place. The former incarnation is a smart place to impress or be impressed over a business lunch. The latter, using its tucked-away location to good effect, affords a quiet place to be with a loved one. Contrary to the Parisian theme, this is a no-smoking restaurant.

At Creelers you can go Bistro-style, or you can dine in more formal surroundings. The opulence and price are determined by your choice. There are a number of vegetarian and meat dishes, and they aren't mere token additions either—comfortably holding their own amongst the fishes.

Cuisine d'Odile

Award-winning French aplomb
13 Randolph Crescent
(The French Institute)
Edinburgh EH3 7TT
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 5685
This is only open during the early afternoon and is the perfect venue for lingering in sophisticated French aplomb. The menu is accomplished and changes daily - starters typically consist of a light pate` or home-made soup, the main course being fish or meat served with salad, and desserts can be French cheese or a much revered home-made pastry. The set-lunch will only cost you GBP6.65, although dishes can be bought separately - the minimum spend is GBP5. It is unlicensed, corkage fee is GBP1. The food is laced with an unpretentious, home-made touch and the location is satisfyingly appropriate; the restaurant lies downstairs from the Institut Francais D'Ecosse. This is altogether a splendid way to while away the day.

Daruma-Ya is the ideal place if you are not completely familiar with the intricacies of Japanese cuisine - the staff could not be more helpful and will guide you around the menu. The menu offers various set meals for those who are unsure about what goes with what etc. Happily, all this is done without pandering to Western cuisine. The food retains its integrity and draws you in with its great mix of flavours and stylish appearance. Wash down the exotic flavours with a drop of sake.

This place lies towards the classier end of fondue joints, with elegance superseding any imagined cow-bell kitsch. Sip on a cocktail or two and enjoy the stylish surroundings before diving into the varied menu. In fact, there's plenty to choose from other than the traditional cheese dish. The service is smart and helpful and the cuisine is very good indeed, mixing traditional Swiss fare with elegant contemporary touches.

An atmospheric hang-out
80 Queen Street

At the Charlotte Square end of Queen Street, the Drum and Monkey is perfectly placed to serve up a wee snifter to the local office crowd on their way home from work, and does a roaring lunchtime trade as well. Lots of dark wood, low armchairs and a smoky atmosphere conspire to create a gentleman's club environment, and groups of well-healed students also use it as a base for a night out. Food is provided in the equally atmospheric City Bistro which serves Scottish fare with a contemporary twist.

Dubh Prais is Gaelic for blackened cooking pot, reflecting the culinary ethos here, to make home-cooked Scots food using the freshest of ingredients. Enjoy the varied and imaginative menu of Scottish cuisine with a twist in this intimate Old Town basement. An example of the inventive starters is the West Coast Broth, a light fish stew flavoured with tabasco and cream. Favourite main courses include Lamb Cutlets, and Aubergine and goats cheese, which is "served as a gateau with a wild mushroom and parmesan crust".

This is a comfy and cheery cafe serving generous portions of home-made food like filled rolls, soup, burgers, baked potatoes and pastries. It is a favourite with students and is always buzzing at lunchtime with workers from the surrounding shops and businesses. Aside from busy lunchtimes, it's a pretty peaceful little haven, and a popular place for a very well-respected cappuccino. It is a convenient place for tourists to rest their weary legs after tramping the length of the Royal Mile.

Attentive service, delicious sauces and big glasses of wine, plus a refreshingly relaxed attitude to children make this a welcoming place. There is an extensive menu, including some great pasta dishes and pizzas cooked in a wood oven. The Edinburgh branch of this national chain is famous for turning away superstars. The story goes that after the big music festival, T in the Park, in Glasgow, the performers rushed through to this great Italian restaurant for their well earned grub. Mick Jagger (allegedly), on being told there were no tables, started on the "Don't you know who I am?" routine, to which the door staff replied that they were still full. So, learn from others' mistakes and book ahead!

Layout wise, there is a recently decorated lunch area, which is spacious and airy and an old-style dining area with familiar curry house touches.

Seafood by the shore in Leith

Leith
Edinburgh EH6 6QW
United Kingdom
+44 131 554 5666
There is something reassuring about a seafood restaurant with the address "Number One The Shore", and you will not be disappointed by Fisher Bistro's unpretentious enthusiasm about seafood. The decor is simple. Bare wooden tables are set with paper napkins, but you're not here to admire the fancy trappings. If you haven't got the idea from the address then the menu will leave you in no doubt about the ethos of the place: there is almost nothing but seafood on it. Even the wine list doesn't get in the way, being small but competent. Although last orders is around 10p, make sure you get there about 9p, any later and it will probably be full. For weekend dining, it's essential to book, they recommend calling two weeks in advance!

Adjacent to the dining room at Haldane's there's a walled garden and patio, which offers a calming view and a fine place sit out in when it's warm. The food tends to be locally sourced, but the contemporary menu steps outside the boundaries of traditional fare. A two-course set lunch is quite reasonably priced, whilst dinner is exclusively a la carte. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. This stylishly situated and spacious cafe affords plenty of room for relaxed conversation. The decor has a political theme and combines famous quotations and photos with huge black and white checks. This restaurant offers great value South Indian and Gujarati vegetarian dishes. It's a firm favorite with locals, especially theatre-goers and students, and has been around for almost twenty years. The cuisine is excellently cooked and the wine list is accomplished - these facts are recognized in many good food guides. Only the freshest of ingredients are used and the chefs have a delicate touch with spices, allowing the natural flavors of nuts, pulses and vegetables to shine through. A muted decor and relaxed atmosphere make it a pleasurable dining experience.

The fusion of old and modern traditions is the running theme at Keepers. Descend into the vaulted underground setting, full of bare stone and dark wood furnishings, which present an atmospheric dining experience, albeit a little chilly in the winter months. Choose from a menu crammed full of old Scots favorites, spiced up with a twist of adventure: the main courses include venison, pheasant, haddock and some quality vegetarian options. If you are on a budget or do not fancy the offerings on the a la carte and table d'hote menus, try one of the great-value lunch options.

The salads provide cheaper options for a main course; they start from £4.40 and include the wonderful Aubergine and Artichoke Insalata. Meaty dishes and seafood specialities up your spend, but at around £8 for a saucy chicken concoction, it is still good value. Deliciously fresh, inventive food is served in elegant, yet cozy surroundings. It might not be the cheapest option, but the excellent food makes it worth it.

Atop the Caledonian sits this epicurean epicentre which has delivered sumptuous a la carte cuisine in these opulent surroundings since 1925. In this evocative space, the walls are adorned with the original, delicate Chinese paintings and the large tables give the diners copious amounts of room to enjoy the occasion. This glamorous scene is watched over by a tinkling pianist and is enjoyed by a mixture of business people, the wealthy and couples. The cuisine is essentially French, although a successful foray is often launched into local territory. It is expensive, yes, but just the place in which to waltz around pretending that you're unreasonably rich. If you are unreasonably rich, it's just the place to lunch whilst admiring the views of Edinburgh Castle.

Simplicity is the watchword here. When you have seafood as fresh as this, too much fussing with garnishes and elaborate sauces is likely to be distracting rather than complementary - so great timing takes precedence over inventiveness. This straight-forward approach is refreshing and the benefits are clear to all who visit the place. The wine list is white-heavy and well constructed. Enjoy the beautifully cooked food in refined nautical surroundings - the dark wood and black and white prints evoke the ambiance of a ship's cabin. This is a seafood lover's paradise.

Traverse Bar Cafe

Theatre cafe-bar in a relaxed basement
Traverse Theatre
10 Cambridge Street
Edinburgh EH1 2ED
United Kingdom
+44 131 228 5383
The Traverse cafe/bar is a relaxed basement venue boasting original Spanish designer-seating under an industrially cool ceiling. It's an excellent place to meet in the center of town, especially for a long brunch with the papers. The menu looks small, but everything on it is good, making it difficult to choose from but easy to peruse. Examples are the focaccia with grilled chicken and herbs, and stuffed mushrooms. There are also daily specials such as spicy Thai meatballs. Main courses cost around £4, and the bar always has interesting drinks promotions to tempt you into a civilized snifter.

Tron Ceilidh House

Jazz Folk
9 Hunter Square
Edinburgh EH1 1QW
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 0931
This is an informal Jazz & Folk music haven. These music genres may not be usual bed-fellows, yet they lie together quite comfortably across the four levels of this bar. There are often informal sessions, so be prepared to spring on-stage at any given moment and give it some welly. There's a varied menu here too, from the traditional to the distinctly Cajun - it's all good stuff and good value. Upstairs is the Jazz cafe - which serves varied fare with a dash of style. Check listings for further details on gigs and club nights.

Vintner's Rooms

Relaxed dining in a 17th century wine warehouse
87 The Vaults, Giles Street
Leith
Edinburgh EH6 6BZ
United Kingdom
+44 131 554 6767
A visit to this 17th century wine warehouse with its fine food and relaxing atmosphere is a joy. The main high-ceilinged room holds the well-stocked bar and has large tables surrounded by colorful tapestries. For a more intimate candlelit dining experience, choose a table in the non-smoking space at the farther end of the room. The wine list is as extensive and well constructed as you would expect from a restaurant of this name; there is plenty of French flair, along with many a New World contender. A very enticing, modern, French provincial menu is offered, with a strong seafood selection and a decent number of vegetarian options.

Enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, cocktails and Latin music - this place has just about everything authentically Mexican you can think of. The restaurant is one of Edinburgh's oldest providers of this type of cuisine, and gives a warm welcome with its bright, bold decor and loads of colourful Latin American ephemera dotted around. All that combined with the reasonably priced, tasty menu and efficient service, makes for a buzzing, enjoyable atmosphere - in fact, most of the punters leave here feeling full of beans.

The Waterfront is set in a converted red-brick Steamship passenger waiting room. There's a pontoon outside which is opened for summer dining and affords splendid views of the docks. Savor the marine flavors of a primarily fishy menu or plump for a rump or sirloin steak. Vegetarians are catered for with a good choice of dishes. Continue the pleasurable experience with a visit to the characterful bar area.

Winter Glen

Stylishly Scottish
3 Dundas Street
Edinburgh EH3 6QG
United Kingdom
+44 131 477 7060
At Winter Glen, traditional Scottish fare is given a modern make-over, so don't expect any stodgy stereotypes. Amidst a comforting contrast of elegant furnishings and rough stone walls, you can enjoy a menu boasting the freshest of locally sourced ingredients whipped up into contemporary dishes such as "chicken breast marinated in chilli and lime, presented on spiced purée of butter beans and sauced with a coriander jus". Some vegetarian dishes are always available. Incidentally, the name comes from an amalgamation of the owners' surnames, so don't expect to find the restaurant in a woodland clearing covered with a blanket of snow!

Zest

Zest for food!
15 North Saint Andrew Street
Edinburgh EH2 1HJ
United Kingdom
+44 (0)131 556 5028
A cool, vibrant and hip eatery that is giving all the other Indian restaurants a run for their money is Zest. True to its name, this place is sprightly and energetic. Located in the city centre with a capacity to seat 50 people, the joint serves up a classic Indian fare. The word "zest"spills over to the décor—which is informal and modern—as well as the service; the wait staff makes sure they handle everyone with kid-gloves. What you need to try at this appetizing restaurant is the tandoori trout, salmon tikka, Jaipuri chicken and prawn palak—enough to make you want to come back for some more! Superb wines and drinks that compliment the food are available and the desserts are a must-have after the meals. Come by with friends and family as this modest venue can accommodate large groups. A great place to experience new and inventive flavors, this one!

Zinc Bar and Grill - Edinburgh

Stylish grill

Edinburgh EH6 7DZ
United Kingdom
+44 131 553 8070

You can't keep The Zinc Bar and Grill out of your list when you are in Edinburgh. The local diners love to be seen and heard here, so why not you? Spacious wooden floored interiors and high ceilings are a few of the unique selling points of Zinc. You can also hang out at one of the longest bars to order your cocktails and pick your date; you'll have plenty of choice! The menu keeps altering, though the influences remain Asian as ever. Try the Thai chicken or the Chilly Shellfish Linguine - both mouthwatering and lingering in taste. Finish off with the tangy Classic Lemon Tart or the Aubergine Tart.
