Totally tropical |
3 Grove Street Edinburgh EH3 8AF United Kingdom +44 131 228 1345 |
As soon as you hear that steel-band music, you begin to cheer up. Then there are the bright tropical colors which make up the decor - they will broaden your grin. By the time you get to the menu, and spot dishes with names like "duppy umbrella" it's impossible not to break into a chuckle or two. The food itself is bursting with taste. It's refreshing to try a cuisine which is not offered on every high street and it's very good value for money too. It's unlicensed so bring your own booze if you like - corkage is free. The good-humored staff simply add to the fun so that before long, you are fully into the spirit of the place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Something of a newcomer amongst the strong crowd of Edinburgh seafood restaurants, Fingal's Cave is "mussel-ing" its way into position. It has a broad range of seafood dishes, from the obvious to the inventive, the classic to the contemporary. Check out the business lunch deal - it's only £6 for three courses. There are also non-fish dishes, including some fine vegetarian creations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Franco-Scot food in a laid-back atmosphere |
63 Dalry Place Edinburgh EH11 United Kingdom +44 131 313 3334 |
Howie's formula is both very beguiling and extremely popular - there are three other incarnations in Edinburgh: at 208 Bruntsfield Place, 29 Waterloo Place and the new 4-6 Glanville Place. This one offers a very reasonably priced three-course set menu which changes each day. The ambience manages to balance sophistication with an endearing intimacy. The cuisine draws on both French and Scottish traditions, creating a pleasing mix of the earthy and the flamboyant. There is a good choice of wines which are consumed with gusto during lively evening sessions. Look out for more special offer meals during the winter months. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mild or spicy in a Raj atmosphere |
3 Atholl Place Edinburgh EH3 8HP United Kingdom +44 131 228 3282 |
This stylish restaurant really has the exclusive air of a Raj establishment. Boasting a varied menu, crammed with rich flavors and a strong leaning towards mild dishes, this is the perfect place for an introduction to Indian cuisine. It's a real paradise for the spice intolerant (aka spice wimps), who are nonetheless fans of this food. The menu is very helpful to the uninitiated as it offers suggestions for accompaniments to your chosen dish. This is particularly useful if you're unsure what sort of wine will suit your chicken tikka. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizza and pasta in a friendly place |
95 Lothian Road Edinburgh EH3 9AW United Kingdom +44 131 229 7788 http://www.lazio-restaurant.co... |
Recently refurbished, Lazio is smart and cool (particularly thanks to the new air-conditioning!) with pizza, pasta and all things Italian which are the order of the day. This long-standing family restaurant provides great service and a mixture of seating arrangements to suit large groups and intimate parties. The salads provide cheaper options for a main course; they start from £4.40 and include the wonderful Aubergine and Artichoke Insalata. Meaty dishes and seafood specialities up your spend, but at around £8 for a saucy chicken concoction, it is still good value. Top off your evening with one of their delicious ice-creams and a sugary Caffe Machiato. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cantonese specialities |
38 William Street Edinburgh EH3 7LJ United Kingdom +44 131 220 1688 |
Specializing in traditional Cantonese home-cooking, the Lune Town is one of the capital's oldest and best exponents of this type of cuisine. Subtle decoration and subdued lighting give it an intimate, relaxing ambience. It's very popular with the local business community, especially for their great value four-course lunch menu which is available for around £7. Please note that a minimum charge of £15 applies during busy dinnertimes - this is a good indication of how well liked this restaurant is. Make sure you try their dim sum - they're some of the best around, and their duck dishes are also worth a taste. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pomp and splendour |
4 Princes Street (Caledonian Hotel) Edinburgh EH1 2AB United Kingdom +44 131 200 9912 |
Atop the Caledonian sits this epicurean epicentre which has delivered sumptuous a la carte cuisine in these opulent surroundings since 1925. In this evocative space, the walls are adorned with the original, delicate Chinese paintings and the large tables give the diners copious amounts of room to enjoy the occasion. This glamorous scene is watched over by a tinkling pianist and is enjoyed by a mixture of business people, the wealthy and couples. The cuisine is essentially French, although a successful foray is often launched into local territory. It is expensive, yes, but just the place in which to waltz around pretending that you're unreasonably rich. If you are unreasonably rich, it's just the place to lunch whilst admiring the views of Edinburgh Castle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Colours of Asia |
8-16A Morrison Street Edinburgh EH3 8JB United Kingdom +44 (0)131 221 1288 |
The Rainbow Arch Gourmet Restaurant on Morrison Street allows you to sample Cantonese cuisine right here in Glasgow, Scotland. Strategically located next to the city's favorite night spots and theaters, it offers such delicious Asian preparations as the sausage-and-chicken rice combo, and sin chok rolls. Hygiene is not very high on the list of priorities here, but all-in-all the restaurant is a convenient eat-out option. Review © 2007, Wcities |
