In the Cellar |
01/03/07 York Place Edinburgh EH1 3EB United Kingdom +44 (0)131 557 9899 http://www.9cellars.co.uk/ |
Chef Thakur of the 9 Cellars Restaurant & Bar proudly displays his achievements on one of its walls. With it's minimalist decor, the only promise 9 Cellars makes is to offer wonderful vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian dishes. Balti dishes are served cold and it will take you all your strength to break the naan bread. However, the snacks and pre-theatre set meals are definitely worth trying—special mention to the mouth-watering samosas and chutneys. Take a call. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Juicy burgers and icy shakes |
7 Stephen Street Edinburgh EH3 5AN United Kingdom +44 131 225 8116 |
Just make sure you haven't eaten for a few weeks before you come here as Bell's has built up quite a reputation for their huge juicy burgers! They come in 4, 6 and 8oz sizes - chicken or beef - and with a selection of tasty little variations on the traditional burger theme. Try a garlic version of an old favorite. Don't worry if large hunks of animal aren't your thing as the vegetarian options here are nurtured just as well as the meaty ones. This diner serves good, simple, well-prepared food. Georgian class |
39a Albany Street Edinburgh EH1 3QY United Kingdom +44 131 556 8407 |
Adjacent to the dining room at Haldane's there's a walled garden and patio, which offers a calming view and a fine place sit out in when it's warm. The food tends to be locally sourced, but the contemporary menu steps outside the boundaries of traditional fare. A two-course set lunch is quite reasonably priced, whilst dinner is exclusively a la carte. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. The dining room itself is light and airy - pleasingly uncomplicated - with an open fire. All in all, it's a very pleasant place to dine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The fusion of old and modern traditions is the running theme at Keepers. Descend into the vaulted underground setting, full of bare stone and dark wood furnishings, which present an atmospheric dining experience, albeit a little chilly in the winter months. Choose from a menu crammed full of old Scots favorites, spiced up with a twist of adventure: the main courses include venison, pheasant, haddock and some quality vegetarian options. If you are on a budget or do not fancy the offerings on the a la carte and table d'hote menus, try one of the great-value lunch options. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A superb selection of traditional Chinese foods |
2 Warriston Place Edinburgh EH3 5LE United Kingdom +44 131 556 1781 |
Loon Fung is open until late on Fridays and Saturdays and it doesn't struggle to fill its tables. There's a comprehensive menu which includes a dish to please every taste, including some wonderfully executed traditional Chinese delicacies. Don't hesitate to ask the waiters for advice - this may be necessary given the bewildering choice. Vegetarians will be pleased with the great range of suitable options. If you are drawn to seafood, the Cantonese menu has some fine fish and crustacea to sample. The decor is attractive and unpretentious, lending an informal ambience to the place. This unpretentious and cozy family-run restaurant offers traditional Moroccan flavors from Rabat and Marakesh. The real treat here, as is the case in many North Mediterranean restaurants, is the home-baked bread and its accompanying scent of caraway—make sure you try it, it's fantastic and goes really well with one of their spicy stews. Tucked away below street level, this is an intimate little restaurant worth seeking out for its unique ambiance and great-value food. It's unlicensed but doesn't charge any cork-age fee.
