Spice slice! |
150 Commercial Street Ocean Drive Edinburgh EH6 6LB United Kingdom +44 131 555 2255 http://www.britanniaspice.co.uk/ |
Anybody interested in tingling up their taste buds with spice, spice, and more spice, Britannia does it for you in styles that remain unparalled this side of Edinburgh! Fusion cuisine from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, and Sri Lanka is rustled up in an informal atmosphere. The interiors are bohemian and look very much like the insides of a ship. Once you have docked and settled in, order the Tandoori Lamb Chops or the Macher Bhorta, which start the curry spice engine roaring! Then move on to the traditional Sri Lankan fare with Chicken Ceylon or the Dhaba Murgh, which is roasted in a charcoal oven to get the crispy crunchy texture! Vegetarians may revel in the several delicious Paneer (cottage cheese) dishes, Saag Paneer Malai being one of them. Keep the spice-o-meter going, or switch to the Asian sweets to tone down the zing! A taste of Japan |

Daruma-Ya is the ideal place if you are not completely familiar with the intricacies of Japanese cuisine - the staff could not be more helpful and will guide you around the menu. The menu offers various set meals for those who are unsure about what goes with what etc. Happily, all this is done without pandering to Western cuisine. The food retains its integrity and draws you in with its great mix of flavours and stylish appearance. Wash down the exotic flavours with a drop of sake. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fondue finery and contemporary dishes |
121 Constitution Street Edinburgh EH6 7AE United Kingdom +44 131 554 3268 |
This place lies towards the classier end of fondue joints, with elegance superseding any imagined cow-bell kitsch. Sip on a cocktail or two and enjoy the stylish surroundings before diving into the varied menu. In fact, there's plenty to choose from other than the traditional cheese dish. The service is smart and helpful and the cuisine is very good indeed, mixing traditional Swiss fare with elegant contemporary touches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seafood by the shore in Leith |
1 The Shore Leith Edinburgh EH6 6QW United Kingdom +44 131 554 5666 |
There is something reassuring about a seafood restaurant with the address "Number One The Shore", and you will not be disappointed by Fisher Bistro's unpretentious enthusiasm about seafood. The decor is simple. Bare wooden tables are set with paper napkins, but you're not here to admire the fancy trappings. If you haven't got the idea from the address then the menu will leave you in no doubt about the ethos of the place: there is almost nothing but seafood on it. Even the wine list doesn't get in the way, being small but competent. Although last orders is around 10p, make sure you get there about 9p, any later and it will probably be full. For weekend dining, it's essential to book, they recommend calling two weeks in advance! Review © 2007, Wcities |

1 Commercial Street Edinburgh EH6 6JA United Kingdom +44 131 554 5272 http://www.giulianos.co.uk/ |
This is an Italian restaurant serving excellent pizzas and an impressive choice of seafood. Pick your dishes from the blackboard or the extensive menu, which has classici alongside those with a little extra fantasia. Observe the flamboyant cooks as they create your meals behind a transparent partition. This is a great restaurant for families - kids are encouraged to decorate their own pizzas. From Monday to Wednesday there is live Italian music and dancing, including an appearance by the local piano-bar legend Roberto Enzo. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a clean, simple chippy which serves traditional British food overlooking Newhaven harbour. Take up Harry's Challenge and attempt to consume a whole prime cod or haddock - if you succeed you will receive a signed certificate and a sweet of your choice, gratis. If the seafood doesn't tempt you, try something different like sausages and mash, ale pudding or escalope of chicken. If you've got room, enjoy some bread and butter pudding or chocolate sponge. French brasserie |
1 Tower Place Leith, Malmaison Hotel Edinburgh EH6 7DB United Kingdom +44 131 368 5000 http://www.malmaison.com/eatin... |
This brasserie, housed in the original Malmaison Hotel of Edinburgh, has a bustling port location that adds to its charm. The interiors are trendy with semi-circles of brick walls and leather seating - note the queer lamps suspended from the ceiling. The eatery may not exactly give the impression of 'Gay Paree', but the Char-Grilled Rib Eye with the Cafe de Paris Butter sure charges up your French connection! Fish fans should try the Salmon Fishcake with Parsley Sauce and Buttered Spinach, and for dessert there is Tarte Tartin with Crème Chantilly; make sure you lace up an appetite for it! 52 Coburg Street Edinburgh EH6 6HJ United Kingdom +44 131 555 0922 |
The interior of this intimate restaurant evokes the spirit of a Mediterranean taverna with its clean, light walls and fishing paraphernalia. The menu lives up to the image that Marinette has created for itself - they certainly know how to prepare their fish! For sheer indulgence, try the seafood platter for £25. The less adventurous should opt for the grilled fish of the day with a sauce of your choice. There is a limited choice of meat dishes and a fine selection of wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

54 The Shore Edinburgh EH6 6RA United Kingdom +44 131 553 3557 / +44 131 553 8998 http://www.martin-wishart.co.uk/ |
Martin Wishart earned a Michelin Star in 2001, only two years after it opened its doors to the gourmet connoisseurs of Edinburgh. The restaurant is named after its young entrepreneur chef, Martin Wishart, and his painstaking efforts are evident in the food preparations as well as presentation. You may dine alfresco facing the beautiful Scottish countryside, or within the cream and white environs, which exude elegance. All the ingredients used are fresh and at times organic. Five and three course menus are on offer with polite and efficient service. What is more, Wishart has revolutionized the concept of catering - it is not just about delivering the food, but about a whole package, which includes a special entourage that cooks the party food in your home and supplies the necessary cutlery, table cloth, napkins et al! With a breathtaking waterside view of the Leith shore, an unusual and atmospheric setting and high quality, authentic North Indian cuisine, the Raj Restaurant has found the key to keeping customers loyal. Housed in a former cinema, this restaurant's spacious interior evokes the days of the Raj with its decorative touches and the playing of silent movies. Solid Scots cooking with Gallic flair |
78 Commercial Street Edinburgh EH6 6LX United Kingdom +44 131 555 2225 |
Situated in the old commercial area of Leith, The Rock is a restaurant that has received much praise for its successful combination of traditional Scottish fare and French flair. It is particularly great for the carnivorous diner, winning popularity amongst the locals for its wide-ranging grill section, which offers far more than the average barbecue. Fear not, this is not a blood-fest—vegetarians get a good choice of dishes and child meals can be arranged. Decoratively, it is stylishly modern with an historical quayside setting and an open-plan kitchen that adds lots of atmosphere to a great meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simplicity is the watchword here. When you have seafood as fresh as this, too much fussing with garnishes and elaborate sauces is likely to be distracting rather than complementary - so great timing takes precedence over inventiveness. This straight-forward approach is refreshing and the benefits are clear to all who visit the place. The wine list is white-heavy and well constructed. Enjoy the beautifully cooked food in refined nautical surroundings - the dark wood and black and white prints evoke the ambiance of a ship's cabin. This is a seafood lover's paradise.
