Spice slice! |
150 Commercial Street Ocean Drive Edinburgh EH6 6LB United Kingdom +44 131 555 2255 http://www.britanniaspice.co.uk/ |
Anybody interested in tingling up their taste buds with spice, spice, and more spice, Britannia does it for you in styles that remain unparalled this side of Edinburgh! Fusion cuisine from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, and Sri Lanka is rustled up in an informal atmosphere. The interiors are bohemian and look very much like the insides of a ship. Once you have docked and settled in, order the Tandoori Lamb Chops or the Macher Bhorta, which start the curry spice engine roaring! Then move on to the traditional Sri Lankan fare with Chicken Ceylon or the Dhaba Murgh, which is roasted in a charcoal oven to get the crispy crunchy texture! Vegetarians may revel in the several delicious Paneer (cottage cheese) dishes, Saag Paneer Malai being one of them. Keep the spice-o-meter going, or switch to the Asian sweets to tone down the zing! Opulent oysters in an evocative Victorian setting |
17A West Register Street Edinburgh EH2 2AA United Kingdom +44 131 556 4124 |
This Victorian Café-Bar oozes elegance, from the main Café Royal Circle Bar with its ornate decoration to the wonderful Oyster Bar in an adjoining room. Glide through the revolving doors, over marble flooring and into a period-piece setting. The food is as exquisite as the decoration - alongside the revered oysters on crushed ice are sumptuous dishes like roasted sea bass and sizzling steaks. A visit to this establishment is a memorable event. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The great Scottish fish supper is a tradition not to be missed but Scots Chippers don't just sell fish - they sell anything and everything that is cooked in batter! Order a haggis, black pudding or sausage in this emporium of filling food. Don't forget, that when in Edinburgh, the traditional way to eat your chips is with salt an' sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bistro or formal fish |
3 Hunter Square Edinburgh EH1 1QW United Kingdom +44 131 220 4447 |
At Creelers you can go Bistro-style, or you can dine in more formal surroundings. The opulence and price are determined by your choice. The content of the menu also depends to a large extent on what the fishermen managed to outwit earlier in the day. This means that the fish are very fresh, as you would expect. Mind you, if you're dragging along someone who refuses to eat anything scaly then don't despair. There are a number of vegetarian and meat dishes, and they aren't mere token additions either—comfortably holding their own amongst the fishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Almost Chinese |
74-78 South Clerk Street Midlothian Edinburgh EH8 9PT United Kingdom +44 (0)131 668 1328 / +44 (0)131 668 2323 |
Located in the Newington area of Edinburgh, Dragon Way invites Chinese food lovers to enjoy Canton, Peking and Schezwan cuisine. Try out the delicious seafood dishes, and if the weird names on the menu card confuse you, simply ask the friendly wait staff for help. Ever heard of the Chinese people drinking beer or wine before or after meals? Well, that is one liberty Dragon Way takes. The restaurant's full fledged bar offers ample options for hard core drinkers. And that's definitely not Chinese! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aladdin's fishery |
24A Stafford Street Edinburgh EH3 7BD United Kingdom +44 131 225 9575 |
Something of a newcomer amongst the strong crowd of Edinburgh seafood restaurants, Fingal's Cave is "mussel-ing" its way into position. It has a broad range of seafood dishes, from the obvious to the inventive, the classic to the contemporary. Check out the business lunch deal - it's only £6 for three courses. There are also non-fish dishes, including some fine vegetarian creations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seafood by the shore in Leith |
1 The Shore Leith Edinburgh EH6 6QW United Kingdom +44 131 554 5666 |
There is something reassuring about a seafood restaurant with the address "Number One The Shore", and you will not be disappointed by Fisher Bistro's unpretentious enthusiasm about seafood. The decor is simple. Bare wooden tables are set with paper napkins, but you're not here to admire the fancy trappings. If you haven't got the idea from the address then the menu will leave you in no doubt about the ethos of the place: there is almost nothing but seafood on it. Even the wine list doesn't get in the way, being small but competent. Although last orders is around 10p, make sure you get there about 9p, any later and it will probably be full. For weekend dining, it's essential to book, they recommend calling two weeks in advance! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional teas in the old Newhaven Fish Market |
5 Newhaven Place Edinburgh EH6 4TX United Kingdom +44 131 551 5566 |
This is a clean, simple chippy which serves traditional British food overlooking Newhaven harbour. Starters include Yorkshire pudding and lobster tails, while for the main course choose between cod, haddock, plaice, halibut and fish cakes. Take up Harry's Challenge and attempt to consume a whole prime cod or haddock - if you succeed you will receive a signed certificate and a sweet of your choice, gratis. If the seafood doesn't tempt you, try something different like sausages and mash, ale pudding or escalope of chicken. If you've got room, enjoy some bread and butter pudding or chocolate sponge. Wash down the hearty fare with a lovely cup of tea or a choice of soft drinks, beers and wines. Keep the kids happy with the indoor play area, children's menu and a play ship outside. Atmospheric cellar restaurant |
13B Dundas Street Edinburgh EH3 6QG United Kingdom +44 131 556 5707 http://www.keepers.sagehost.co... |
The fusion of old and modern traditions is the running theme at Keepers. Descend into the vaulted underground setting, full of bare stone and dark wood furnishings, which present an atmospheric dining experience, albeit a little chilly in the winter months. Choose from a menu crammed full of old Scots favorites, spiced up with a twist of adventure: the main courses include venison, pheasant, haddock and some quality vegetarian options. If you are on a budget or do not fancy the offerings on the a la carte and table d'hote menus, try one of the great-value lunch options. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The fruits of the Mediterranean |
52 Coburg Street Edinburgh EH6 6HJ United Kingdom +44 131 555 0922 |
The interior of this intimate restaurant evokes the spirit of a Mediterranean taverna with its clean, light walls and fishing paraphernalia. The menu lives up to the image that Marinette has created for itself - they certainly know how to prepare their fish! For sheer indulgence, try the seafood platter for £25. The less adventurous should opt for the grilled fish of the day with a sauce of your choice. There is a limited choice of meat dishes and a fine selection of wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive dining |
11a-13a William Street Edinburgh EH3 7NG United Kingdom +44 (0)131 226 3161 http://www.scotchmist.co.uk/ |
For a taste of original Scotland, come to this premier restaurant. At first glance, this cubby-hole of a joint may not appeal to the aesthetic senses, but, on sampling the cuisine, any such predispositions are quickly dispelled. Traditional Scottish fare is given twist with French and continental tastes blended in. Try the Chicken Stuffed Haggis—a specialty with a difference. The wine list is well updated and incorporates local brews as well as international spirits. All in all, it is a good experience for those looking for a good meal within a reasonable budget and a quiet ambiance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh fish on the Leith shore |
24-26 The Shore Leith Edinburgh EH6 6QN United Kingdom +44 131 555 0409 |
Ship on the Shore is on the shore and it's decor resembles a ship's interior, so you'll feel perfectly at home amongst the plethora of seafood dishes on offer. There are lots of fresh fish as you would expect, but what's particularly pleasing is the range of cuisine. It stretches from the delicate and subtle, to the hearty and rich. The lunch menu is excellent value, and therefore draws a crowd. The relaxing atmosphere attracts a mixed clientèle and is especially popular with business folk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shore |
3 The Shore Leith City of Edinburgh EH6 6QW United Kingdom +44 131 553 5080 www.theshore.biz |
Simplicity is the watchword here. When you have seafood as fresh as this, too much fussing with garnishes and elaborate sauces is likely to be distracting rather than complementary - so great timing takes precedence over inventiveness. This straight-forward approach is refreshing and the benefits are clear to all who visit the place. The wine list is white-heavy and well constructed. Enjoy the beautifully cooked food in refined nautical surroundings - the dark wood and black and white prints evoke the ambiance of a ship's cabin. This is a seafood lover's paradise.
