Contemporary cuisine with a Scottish twist |
10 Cambridge Street Edinburgh EH1 2ED United Kingdom +44 131 228 8882 |
Renowned for excellence, The Atrium has certainly made its culinary mark on Edinburgh. The decor lands somewhere between African rusticity and minimalist chic. Rough-hewn tables and autumnal colours are presented with a simple elegance which works very well. The cuisine is inventive, drawing particularly on Mediterranean and Scottish influences, all wrapped up in contemporary sophistication. There is an emphasis on fish and vegetables, and a love of hybrid dishes - traditional Scottish foods are given a modern twist. Of particular note is the extensive and well-thought-out wine list, including many varieties which are available by the glass. There are also pages dedicated to sherries and ports. This is a great dining experience. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sleek minimalist surroundings and tall windows provide the perfect backdrop for contemplating or chatting over coffee, whilst munching a crisp salad. Try simply divorcing yourself from your conscience while tucking into one of their totally wicked desserts. Blue has a moderately priced menu, including lots of classics as well as more innovative dishes, and makes ample provision for children. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scottish parade |
10 Cambridge Street Edinburgh EH1 2ED United Kingdom +44 131 221 1222 http://www.bluebarcafe.com/ |
You are in for a wholesome Scottish meal when you are at the Blue Bar. Stylishly done up interiors and excellent service are some of this restaurant's strenghts. It was named for the 'independent restaurateur of the year', apart from bagging the 'spirit of Scotland' food award. 'Real food at real prices' is an oft repeated mantra, and rings true even today. In the food segment, Crayfish Noodles and Toasted Marinated Crottin are chosen time and again. But you could try the Pork, Apple and Sage sausages with pickled onions and mash. Different menus are available, such as the Blue menu, Blue Buffet Menu and even a Blue Christmas Menu! Choose your cocktails from the Blue Cocktails Menu. And then goblets up! Bengali mix |
6 Brougham Place Edinburgh EH3 9HW United Kingdom +44 131 229 3839 |
It's unclear what exactly is so special about bicycles from Bombay - the colorful specimens that adorn the walls add a quirky element to this busy and elegant venue. Expect traditional Bengali cuisine spiced up with some more innovative recipes - the seafood dishes are especially good and the banquets are a great option if you can't make up your mind which dish to choose. They have plenty of vegetarian options. They also provide a handy takeaway service. This is a popular place so its safer to book in advance - it's often used for special events. Totally tropical |
3 Grove Street Edinburgh EH3 8AF United Kingdom +44 131 228 1345 |
As soon as you hear that steel-band music, you begin to cheer up. Then there are the bright tropical colors which make up the decor - they will broaden your grin. By the time you get to the menu, and spot dishes with names like "duppy umbrella" it's impossible not to break into a chuckle or two. The food itself is bursting with taste. It's refreshing to try a cuisine which is not offered on every high street and it's very good value for money too. It's unlicensed so bring your own booze if you like - corkage is free. The good-humored staff simply add to the fun so that before long, you are fully into the spirit of the place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amid all the partisan arguing and political maneuvering regarding Kurdistan's role in the Iraq situation, it can be easy to forget that Kurdistan is a place with a culture and a history and a people - and a cuisine. Hanam's goes a long way toward filling that hole in your base of knowledge - and that hunger in your belly. Specialties are filled with traditional ingredients like alubia beans, okra, sultanas, aubergines and courgettes. Choose from hearty stewed-vegetable plates and savory shish kebab platters. For a more complete overview of Kurdish cuisine, opt for one of a number of set family-style meals. Wash it all down with a glass of beer, wine or champagne. Corkage is free. See website for menus, photos, home delivery info and more on Kurdish culture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant in Edinburgh was christened Heights, thanks to its wonderful location on the fifth level of the Apex International Hotel. Overlooking the historical Edinburgh Castle, Heights sure makes your dining experience a special and unforgettable one. What strikes as strange though, is the management's promise to secure a window facing table for ALL visitors. It is strongly recommended for its Scottish innovations, rich interiors and picturesque backdrop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Franco-Scot food in a laid-back atmosphere |
63 Dalry Place Edinburgh EH11 United Kingdom +44 131 313 3334 |
Howie's formula is both very beguiling and extremely popular - there are three other incarnations in Edinburgh: at 208 Bruntsfield Place, 29 Waterloo Place and the new 4-6 Glanville Place. This one offers a very reasonably priced three-course set menu which changes each day. The ambience manages to balance sophistication with an endearing intimacy. The cuisine draws on both French and Scottish traditions, creating a pleasing mix of the earthy and the flamboyant. There is a good choice of wines which are consumed with gusto during lively evening sessions. Look out for more special offer meals during the winter months. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mild or spicy in a Raj atmosphere |
3 Atholl Place Edinburgh EH3 8HP United Kingdom +44 131 228 3282 |
This stylish restaurant really has the exclusive air of a Raj establishment. Boasting a varied menu, crammed with rich flavors and a strong leaning towards mild dishes, this is the perfect place for an introduction to Indian cuisine. It's a real paradise for the spice intolerant (aka spice wimps), who are nonetheless fans of this food. The menu is very helpful to the uninitiated as it offers suggestions for accompaniments to your chosen dish. This is particularly useful if you're unsure what sort of wine will suit your chicken tikka. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizza and pasta in a friendly place |
95 Lothian Road Edinburgh EH3 9AW United Kingdom +44 131 229 7788 http://www.lazio-restaurant.co... |
Recently refurbished, Lazio is smart and cool (particularly thanks to the new air-conditioning!) with pizza, pasta and all things Italian which are the order of the day. This long-standing family restaurant provides great service and a mixture of seating arrangements to suit large groups and intimate parties. The salads provide cheaper options for a main course; they start from £4.40 and include the wonderful Aubergine and Artichoke Insalata. Meaty dishes and seafood specialities up your spend, but at around £8 for a saucy chicken concoction, it is still good value. Top off your evening with one of their delicious ice-creams and a sugary Caffe Machiato. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Specializing in traditional Cantonese home-cooking, the Lune Town is one of the capital's oldest and best exponents of this type of cuisine. Subtle decoration and subdued lighting give it an intimate, relaxing ambience. It's very popular with the local business community, especially for their great value four-course lunch menu which is available for around £7. Please note that a minimum charge of £15 applies during busy dinnertimes - this is a good indication of how well liked this restaurant is. Light minimalist bar in contemporary hotel |
34 Bread Street Edinburgh EH3 9AF United Kingdom +44 131 221 5555 |
This bar/grill is part of the Point Hotel, and as such oozes contemporary class. Moreover, it is the place to be seen and to spot celebrities. Huge plate glass windows look on to the street and allow light to stream into the minimalist chrome-filled space. Monboddo was apparently a fun-loving judge who entertained the likes of Darwin, Boswell and Burns at his wild 18th century soirees. The bar offers exclusive wines, an extensive range of draught and bottled beers, lots of cocktails and house champagne. Taste some cut-price opulence during the 5p-8p Happy Hour, with all drinks. The Light Lunch menu is served from 11a onwards, changes daily and includes fresh ingredients in imaginative fusion dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |
