Aha Ha Ha

A laugh a minute
99 West Bow
Edinburgh EH1 2JP
United Kingdom

Dress up as a cowboy, strut around in a ginger afro and play tricks on your teacher - this place has all the gags and don't worry parents, it's all quite cheap too! This is just the place for the smallest comedian in your family to stock up on whoopee cushions and fake spiders to terrify your relatives with. Don't blame us though if the next cup of tea you have has a plastic maggot nestling in the bottom of it.

In the heart of the bustling Grassmarket area stands Edinburgh's oldest second-hand shop. Now one of the best retro stockists in the city, it began life as a gentleman's outfitter in 1840. The stock changes daily and prices are very wallet friendly. A pair of jeans might set you back only £10 and a kitsch Hawaiian shirt just £5. The packed shop is bursting at the seams with glittery frocks, leather jackets and psychedelic shirts.

Edinburgh EH1 1LS
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 4966
Flip pops up all over the UK and it's no surprise to find a branch of this American retro outlet in Edinburgh - a city that loves second-hand chic. The best buys here are, without doubt, the trousers and the shirts. Check out the cords and jeans in particular as well as the vast selection of lumberjack and cowboy gear. Feast your eyes on a treasure trove of everything from logo t-shirts to ballgowns. This is the sort of place young and hip children's TV presenters buy their threads. It is the haunt of those seeking a bit of inspiration, like Ronan Keating, who was spotted browsing here recently.

Ignore your dentist's advice and indulge at this notable patisserie. Downstairs you can get coffee and cakes - the rich delights on offer are not for the calorie-counter. In fact there are enough pastries and cakes to keep even the most sweet-toothed content. If you want to have lunch or a light supper, venture upstairs for a baguette or a quiche. Like the cakes on offer, these savoury options are very tasty.

Edinburgh EH2 2LT

+44 131 220 1276
http://www.frenchconnection.com/
fcuk, an abbreviation for French Connection UK, clearly subscribes to the philosophy that sex sells. With the saucy "fcuk" advertising campaign you would be forgiven for expecting a boudoir-style store with leather and PVC aplenty. However, French Connection's strengths are, in fact, smart, well-made suits and separates. Amongst the many high street stores, French Connection is one of the more expensive, yet continues to produce quality clothes that have longevity. Although most of the garb is smart but not too conservative, there is room in their catalogue for more innovative, colorful and sparkly tops.

Service and fabrics make this outfitter what it is. Choose from different weights of tartan fabric and a collection of clan designs. There are also evening jackets made of wool and barathea, as well as women's clothing, and accessories including ghillie evening shoes, plaid brooches, bonnets, garter flashes and pigskin or fur sporrans. Although the prices are high, the products are finished and should last a while.

MacSweens is the place to come to get your hands on the famous Scots delicacy, haggis—each batch of the meaty treat is tested for quality by one of the members of this family business. You might not have the stomach for this heavy sausage as its ingredients are not for the squeamish—it is made of animal liver, lungs, heart and oatmeal which is stuffed into a sheep's stomach and finally boiled. It is eaten all year, but particularly on January 25th, Burns night. There is vegetarian haggis available in this friendly shop, which would make an unusual gift.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is adding an increasingly chic aspect to its long-standing reputation for quality clothes. This is due to the introduction of new, young designers into its team, as well as a more liberal use of expensive fabrics. It's especially strong on women's underwear. M&S also has a reputation for quality food and has an excellent own-brand range. Apparently their peanuts are transported along the production line on a velvet-covered conveyer-belt so that they arrive in your hand intact and looking their best. Whigmaleeries is the name of a Scottish country dance for three couples. Also known as All Things Scottish and Plaid, this company has three shops in Edinburgh selling kitsch mementoes. This store offers a wide choice of tartan treats for the tourist, with classic mugs, fridge-magnets, novelty hats and much more besides. The other Royal Mile branch is at 344 Lawnmarket and stocks more upmarket souvenirs, such as replica weaponry, glass and china. If you can't find that elusive Scots item to take home, try their third branch at 2 Upper Bow.

Upon moving into the back room you'll find an assortment of fetish and equipment under glass and hanging on the walls: from whips to chained vests, collars and leads. There is also legwear, fishnets, seamed stockings and spiky-heeled boots in PVC. If the latest fetish fashion trend has caught your eye, this is the place to get the real thing.

Whistles

Quality high fashion
97 George Street
Edinburgh EH2 3ES
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 4398
You'll find high fashion quirkiness and wearability here from the London-based store. Browse through their own label creations alongside designers such as Ghost, Mr & Mrs MacLeod, Sonia Nuttall and Shirin Guild. The shop is tidily laid out and the clothes are well displayed with matching accessories tempting you at eye-level. If you need to know what the new Sloanes on the Kings Road are wearing, this is probably the place in which to find out.

Wind Things

High as a kite
11 Cowgate
Grassmarket
Edinburgh EH1 2HY
United Kingdom
+44 131 622 7032
Don't leave Edinburgh without taking advantage of the gusty weather by flying a kite on Arthur's Seat. If you are blown over by the idea then set your sails in the direction of this shop, as it stocks all manner of kites, from old-fashioned flappers to the new nimble designs. If you know someone with circus aspirations, buy them a unicycle or some other fairground kit from this fun-filled outlet. If that sounds a bit dangerous for an unbalanced chum, stick with some juggling balls, although you'd better wait till they're accomplished before you buy them the specialist knives!

Wonderland

Space-age models and wooden galleons
97 Lothian Road
Edinburgh EH3 9AN
United Kingdom
+44 131 229 6428
This shop is a dream come true for kids who love all things space-age, gory and sci-fi, and grown-up enthusiasts who have a steady hand and an eye for model building. There are model kits of all descriptions and the range is fantastic - from extremely complicated military behemoths to relatively easy kits for tiny hands. The quality of the toys is high and there are helpful staff around for advice should you need it. This is an excellent place to buy presents or to take the kids to, but beware—they'll want just about everything they see.

Woods the Barbers

Short back and sides
12 Drummond Street
Edinburgh EH8 9TU
United Kingdom
This is a traditional, solid, old-fashioned barber shop, right down to the red and white stripy poles outside. You know straight away what you're getting here - none of the fancy fripperies we fork out for elsewhere, just a good quality haircut. It's unlikely you'll find anyone asking for some mousse or a light back combing.
