Ye olde sweet shoppe
52 St Mary's Street
Edinburgh EH1 1SX

This shop, established in 1954, is stuck in a wonderfully sticky timewarp. With shelves of old glass jars full of colourful sweets and those special scales to weigh them on, it's just like one of those confectioners of old. This is the place to indulge in nostalgia about your favourite childhood treat by asking for a quarter or three of humbugs, sherbert lemons, cola bottles, and rhubarb and custards.

Florentine

Gooey gateaux and savoury sauces

Iain Mellis Cheesemonger is a bit of a mecca for cheese gourmets, bursting as it is with a huge variety of different types and textures. If you require advice on which sort to serve with a meal they can help here, and give you a chance to sample something new as well. They specialize in handmade, unpasteurized, farmhouse cheeses made in Britain and Ireland but also have an excellent range of Continental cheeses. The uninitiated should brace themselves for the powerful aroma as you enter this temple to curds but even the most discerning of cheese "noses" will appreciate the mass of interesting and unusual slabs on display.

Upper-crust pleasures

http://www.jenners.com/
Known to some as Scotland's Harrods, this independent department store counts the British Royal Family amongst its illustrious clientèle. Classy, expensive and extremely well-stocked, there are many reasons to visit Jenners. It is something of an institution in Scotland, boasting a wide variety of luxury goods, from expensive jewelery to smoked salmon. Besides six floors of elegantly merchandised departments, this is the capital's only stockist of Fisher and Donaldson's wonderful Dr. Floyd's bread. Wander around the fabulous food hall, feasting your eyes on the delicious imported delicacies. If none of the goods tempt you, it's a great place to saunter around soaking up the genteel atmosphere, pretending to be a lady or gentleman of leisure. This is a particularly jolly place to visit around Christmas for the fantastic window displays and impressive decorations.

MacSweens is the place to come to get your hands on the famous Scots delicacy, haggis—each batch of the meaty treat is tested for quality by one of the members of this family business. You might not have the stomach for this heavy sausage as its ingredients are not for the squeamish—it is made of animal liver, lungs, heart and oatmeal which is stuffed into a sheep's stomach and finally boiled. It is eaten all year, but particularly on January 25th, Burns night. There is vegetarian haggis available in this friendly shop, which would make an unusual gift.
