Armstrongs

Retro cool fashion and fancy dress
83 Grassmarket
Edinburgh EH1 2HJ
United Kingdom
+44 131 220 5557
http://www.armstrongsvintage.c...
In the heart of the bustling Grassmarket area stands Edinburgh's oldest second-hand shop. Now one of the best retro stockists in the city, it began life as a gentleman's outfitter in 1840. The stock changes daily and prices are very wallet friendly. A pair of jeans might set you back only £10 and a kitsch Hawaiian shirt just £5. The packed shop is bursting at the seams with glittery frocks, leather jackets and psychedelic shirts.

Check out Bhs for clothes and shoes, plus the good range of well-priced household goods. The clothes are in the middle price range, although the odd designer name is often to be found working under the Bhs name with small, more daring exclusive collections. You can also find some attractive accessories, including bags and hats, as well as some bright and cheerful children's wear.

Corniche

Designer togs
2 Jeffrey Street
Edinburgh EH1 1DT
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 3707
This is just the place to find something a little more original than the high street offerings. They specialize in exclusive designer clothing for women and they have a great ability for picking the "must have" items for the seasons ahead - even if that item is gingham or a large corsage. Their wide selection encompasses labels such as Ghost, Anna Sui and Vivienne Westwood. There are also carefully chosen and displayed accessories, including some chic bags and elegant jewelery.

Debenhams

Mainstream merchandise and guest designers
109-112 Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 3AA
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 1320
http://www.debenhams.com/
Debenhams is now considered the great British department store. The recent introduction of such designers as John Rocha, Jasper Conran and Pearce Fionda has led to an up-swing in their reputation. There are also slightly cheaper but equally funky labels like Jane Norman and Red Herring. For men, it is still a great place to get a reasonable suit. Hats are a specialty, as is the wedding-list service they provide. Every year they run a Bride of the Year competition, which focuses and consolidates their bridal strengths.

59-61 South Bridge
Edinburgh EH1 1LS
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 4966
Flip pops up all over the UK and it's no surprise to find a branch of this American retro outlet in Edinburgh - a city that loves second-hand chic. The best buys here are, without doubt, the trousers and the shirts. Check out the cords and jeans in particular as well as the vast selection of lumberjack and cowboy gear. Feast your eyes on a treasure trove of everything from logo t-shirts to ballgowns. This is the sort of place young and hip children's TV presenters buy their threads. It is the haunt of those seeking a bit of inspiration, like Ronan Keating, who was spotted browsing here recently.

Princes Street

Bustling Shopping District
Princes Street
Edinburgh
United Kingdom
Princes Street has its fair share of quality shops, from the elegance of Jenners, the most traditional of department stores (which has big designer names, good quality restaurants and a fantastic food hall) - to the ubiquitous high street names of Boots, Gap, Debenhams and the House of Fraser. Just south of Princes Street are the Princes Street Gardens with Calton Hill to the east and The National Gallery of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Academy to the west. The famed Hogmanay celebrations are centered in Princes Street Gardens and Princes Street itself. Truly a center for shopping and culture, Princes Street is must see.
