Aitken & Niven

Traditional Scottish independent department store
6 Falcon Road West
Morningside
Edinburgh EH10 4AQ
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 1461
http://www.aitken-niven.co.uk
Located in the neighborhood of Morningside, Aitken & Niven was established in 1905. The store houses eight different departments on three floors and also has a restaurant. It is renowned in well-to-do Edinburgh circles, including the well-healed ladies who lunch here, for its school uniforms, tartans and tweeds. Check out the good selection of school sports equipment and traditional country-wear so beloved of the older Edinburgh set. It's also the place to see a large collection of rugby goods and accessories - this store has strong links with the oval-ball game.

British Home Stores (BHS)

British Home Stores
64 Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 2DJ
United Kingdom
+44 131 226 2621
http://www.bhs.co.uk/
Check out Bhs for clothes and shoes, plus the good range of well-priced household goods. The clothes are in the middle price range, although the odd designer name is often to be found working under the Bhs name with small, more daring exclusive collections. You can also find some attractive accessories, including bags and hats, as well as some bright and cheerful children's wear.

Debenhams

Mainstream merchandise and guest designers
109-112 Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 3AA
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 1320
http://www.debenhams.com/
Debenhams is now considered the great British department store. The recent introduction of such designers as John Rocha, Jasper Conran and Pearce Fionda has led to an up-swing in their reputation. There are also slightly cheaper but equally funky labels like Jane Norman and Red Herring. For men, it is still a great place to get a reasonable suit. Hats are a specialty, as is the wedding-list service they provide. Every year they run a Bride of the Year competition, which focuses and consolidates their bridal strengths.

Frasers

Quality department store
145 Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 4DL
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 2472
Frasers is a quality name, placed in the middle/upper bracket of department stores. This building is a bit of a landmark at the west end of Princes Street. It is very strong on casual designer names such as DKNY and Laundry. There's a good range of menswear, womenswear, designer housewares and a very comprehensive cosmetics and perfume floor. There is also a smart cafe upstairs serving good quality lunches.

At the Gyle, you can do all your shopping under one roof, which is perfect for a rainy day. From newsagents to clothes emporiums, from aisles of food at Safeway to large stores such as John Menzies and Marks and Spencer, there is an army of shops here - 63 to be precise. An added bonus is the free parking. If you like shopping centres and the well-known high street names, this is worth venturing out of the city centre for.

Jenners

Upper-crust pleasures
Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 2YG
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 2442
http://www.jenners.com/
Known to some as Scotland's Harrods, this independent department store counts the British Royal Family amongst its illustrious clientèle. Classy, expensive and extremely well-stocked, there are many reasons to visit Jenners. It is something of an institution in Scotland, boasting a wide variety of luxury goods, from expensive jewelery to smoked salmon. Besides six floors of elegantly merchandised departments, this is the capital's only stockist of Fisher and Donaldson's wonderful Dr. Floyd's bread. Wander around the fabulous food hall, feasting your eyes on the delicious imported delicacies. If none of the goods tempt you, it's a great place to saunter around soaking up the genteel atmosphere, pretending to be a lady or gentleman of leisure. This is a particularly jolly place to visit around Christmas for the fantastic window displays and impressive decorations.

John Lewis

Reliable department store
69 St James Centre
Edinburgh EH1 3SP
United Kingdom
+44 131 556 9121
http://www.johnlewis.com/servi...
Traditionally a firm favorite with the middle-classes, John Lewis's slogan is "Never Knowingly Undersold". Therein lies their reputation for being reliable - if you find the same product cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference. This is a well laid-out store which is easy to get around. There are many different brands of fashion items for all age-groups to buy here. There is also an excellent range of household products at reasonable prices. Jewelery, handbags, sports goods, toys, furniture, fabrics, clothing, luggage and other essential accessories like umbrellas can all be found here. If you're hungry, stop in to one of the cafés to have breakfast, tea or just a snack!

Marks & Spencer

Quality and design
53 Princes Street
Edinburgh EH2 2DQ
United Kingdom
+44 131 225 2301
http://www.marksandspencer.com/
Marks & Spencer (M&S) is adding an increasingly chic aspect to its long-standing reputation for quality clothes. This is due to the introduction of new, young designers into its team, as well as a more liberal use of expensive fabrics. It's especially strong on women's underwear. M&S also has a reputation for quality food and has an excellent own-brand range. Apparently their peanuts are transported along the production line on a velvet-covered conveyer-belt so that they arrive in your hand intact and looking their best. The M&S range is especially strong on quality ready-meals.

http://www.oceanterminal.com/
A short ride from the center of Edinburgh is Ocean Terminal, a mega-mall with all the best High Street shops, department stores and major national and international chains. There's a BHS, Debenhams, HMV, Build-A-Bear Workshop, GAP and Waterstones. A great place to stop for a bite to eat or to rest after viewing the nearby Royal Yacht Britannia. The large Vue Cinema nearby offers further entertainment for the afternoon or evening out in Leith.

Princes Mall

Central shopping mecca
Princes Street
Waverley Bridge
Edinburgh EH1 1BQ
United Kingdom
This is popularly known as Waverley Market and was formerly a fruit and vegetable market. Once passed the sunken and nondescript exterior, there is a bright, two floored treasure trove of shops, full of stylish clothes and gifts. Alongside the mostly well-known shops like The Body Shop, Warehouse and Morgan, there are outlets selling traditional Scottish goods and souvenirs. Take a break in one of the various cafes dotted around. During the Festival, there are often plenty of distractions from the shopping, in the form of wacky street performers.

Take your pick from sixty shops all under one roof. The anchor store is a huge John Lewis, an Edinburgh institution. There is a food court where you can rest your weary limbs, cool down your credit card strips and refuel after a long shopping session. All your favourite high-street shops are represented including a large well-stocked Boots, HMV, River Island and Next. There is ample parking for 1,200 vehicles and plenty of buses at the nearby transport terminal.
