The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts are more commonly known as "The Proms". Usually held at the Royal Albert Hall, these performances of classical music have an informal atmosphere and music lovers pack the stands every year. The Last Night of The Proms is world famous and it is extremely difficult to get tickets for that night. Tickets are by lottery and in order to qualify, you must have attended at least six other concerts during the season. Because the Last Night is inaccessible to most people, Hyde Park now hosts an open-air concert on the same night with tickets available to the general public. Performance times vary.

Eights Week

College rowing races
The Isis (Thames)
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1
http://archive.comlab.ox.ac.uk...
The highlights of college rowing are 'Summer Eights' in late May and the less prestigious 'Torpids' in late February. On each occasion, racing takes place over four days from just south of Donnington Bridge to the boathouses south of Folly Bridge. Commonly referred to as 'bump races' because the boats start in procession at 10-metre intervals and try to catch or 'bump' the boat in front. When this happens the boats involved in the 'bumping' stop racing until the next day when they change places. The objective is eventually to get to the front and become 'Head of the River'. Admission: free.

'Remember, remember, the fifth of November...' Cambridge celebrates this national event, Guy Fawkes' Night, commemorating the infamous attempt by the Catholic plotter Guy Fawkes to blow up the Parliament during times of lesser religious tolerance by the Protestant ruling class and king. An impressive fireworks display and bonfire is held annually on Midsummer Common. Throngs of people brave the cold and mud to watch the city council send off an impressive variety of fireworks and light up a bonfire on top of which burns an effigy of Guy Fawkes.

These are heady times for Fulham FC, a club founded in 1879 that faced extinction only a few years ago. The money of Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has not only secured the club's future, but has turned them into a real force in English football. Their meteoric rise has now led them into the Premiership after storming to the First Division title last season with over a hundred points. French maestro Jean Tigana now has Fulham playing exciting, attacking football, and it seems only a matter of time before one of the richest clubs in the English game becomes one of the best. Tickets for matches cost 13-17 GBP, with season tickets at 300-350 GBP (with reductions available for over-65s and children). The home ground, at Craven Cottage, seats over 19,500.

While Frankfurt may be home to the book fair, London's Book Fair is still one of the top literary scenes. Over 1,000 companies converge to bring all aspects of the book trade under one roof. With the proliferation of multimedia products, the publishing industry has changed a lot in the past decade, but don't worry, because the old fashioned printed book isn't in any danger. Authors, literary agents, librarians and keen readers alike will be enthralled by the range of services available at the fair, from advice on publishing a novel to collections of rare books.

London is still a global fashion force. Home to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Clements Ribiero and Ronit Zilkha, London leads the pack when it comes to eclectic style. New York may be sleek, Paris classic, Milan chic, and Tokyo super-trendy, but London mixes it all up to great effect. Two annual fashion weeks, sponsored by The British Fashion Council and Vidal Sassoon, bring you the best of the new season's collections. While the Natural History Museum is usually the site of most catwalk shows, many designers are taking their shows to other, hipper venues.

If you thought mime was all clowns trapped inside perspex cubes, this will soon change your perception. Encompassing a wide range of styles from the disturbing psychological probing of Russia's BlackSkyWhite company, through France's physical, frenetic Theatre du Mouvement, to the cutting edge abstract puppetry show by the acclaimed American innovators Basil Twist, this annual event has something for everyone. One of Britain's biggest motoring spectacles with an estimated one million people lining the route, this June run (not race) heads through central London, Westminster, Lambeth, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Purley, Redhill and Gatwick, before taking B-roads from Crawley to Brighton. Only cars built before 1 January 1905 are eligible. Of course, the ripe old age of many of these veteran cars mean that quite a few don't make it to the finish line. Cars are limited to 20 mph, so it's no wonder that the race starts at 7.30am.

The Round the Island Race is the largest single yacht race in the world. Run by the Island Sailing Club, it is a straight race around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. About 1500 boats compete each year and any yacht of any shape or size can take part, as a handicapping system is used to determine the winner. Everyone that finishes receives a tankard and the victor collects the prestigious Roman Golden Bowl. Good vantage points to observe the action include The Needles, St. Catherine's Point and Ryde Pier, all on the Isle of Wight, and Hurst Point on the mainland.

Much hay is made about the might of the once-powerful Royal Navy - how it ruled the seas and ensured that the sun never set on the British Empire. But what of the Royal Air Force? Were it not for the brave boys of the RAF, surely we'd all be speaking German right now. Thus, a right handsome museum is in order. At the RAF Museum, you'll be treated to a dramatic retelling of the story of the famed organization - and the history of flight in Britain and around the world. You'll see real planes, jets and bombers, as well as engines, weapons and other vehicles integral to any serious war effort. You'll see uniforms, medals and other awards, photo galleries and informational archives. See website for complete visitor details.

Ascot is the most famous and prestigious flat-racing event in the English calendar. Famous as much for the ladies' hats as the racing, dress at this event is formal, and it is a showpiece of tradition and high fashion. Ladies' Day is on the Thursday of Royal Ascot, and sees all the women that attend wearing the most flamboyant hat they could find. Members of the Royal Family attend on each of the four days. The event is extremely popular and tickets always sell out quickly.

The Show Jumping event will provide lots of entertainment. The cross country course is designed anti-clock wise, and with new fences and a water jump, there's a lot to look forward to. Educate yourself about farm animals at the livestock show during your visit. Get your children along, and they can learn a thing or two too, such as the art of making beeswax candles.

The Shepherd's Bush Empire, now owned by the McKenzie Group Limited, opened on 17th August 1903. VW's seem to have a special place in people's hearts, and at this big get together for VW owners, drivers and enthusiasts, you can ogle the funny looking little cars in all their glory. There are hundreds of versions, from classics to just off the production line models. There are also competitions of driving skills, aesthetics and a demonstration of an "engine blow" where you give a car no oil and see how long it takes for it to splutter and die! The grand finale consists of a "Street Cruise," with hundreds of VW's descending onto the city's roads and forming a beetle procession.

Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival

Ancient farmers' rite

A real oddity of local tradition, the Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival is a revival of an ancient farming rite which takes place in early January. A ploughman is dressed up in straw (the straw bear) and leads a procession of dancers and folk musicians through the village. The week leading up to the procession is marked by concerts and a ceilidh, and the Saturday procession sees all the village pubs packed out, with Morris dancers performing at each one. In the evening there are barn dances and ceilidhs, and on the Sunday the straw bear is burnt.
