The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts are more commonly known as "The Proms". Usually held at the Royal Albert Hall, these performances of classical music have an informal atmosphere and music lovers pack the stands every year. The Last Night of The Proms is world famous and it is extremely difficult to get tickets for that night. Tickets are by lottery and in order to qualify, you must have attended at least six other concerts during the season. Because the Last Night is inaccessible to most people, Hyde Park now hosts an open-air concert on the same night with tickets available to the general public. Performance times vary. College rowing races |

The highlights of college rowing are 'Summer Eights' in late May and the less prestigious 'Torpids' in late February. On each occasion, racing takes place over four days from just south of Donnington Bridge to the boathouses south of Folly Bridge. Commonly referred to as 'bump races' because the boats start in procession at 10-metre intervals and try to catch or 'bump' the boat in front. When this happens the boats involved in the 'bumping' stop racing until the next day when they change places. The objective is eventually to get to the front and become 'Head of the River'. Midsummer Common Cambridge CB5 8DR +44 1223 45 7521 |
'Remember, remember, the fifth of November...' Cambridge celebrates this national event, Guy Fawkes' Night, commemorating the infamous attempt by the Catholic plotter Guy Fawkes to blow up the Parliament during times of lesser religious tolerance by the Protestant ruling class and king. An impressive fireworks display and bonfire is held annually on Midsummer Common. Throngs of people brave the cold and mud to watch the city council send off an impressive variety of fireworks and light up a bonfire on top of which burns an effigy of Guy Fawkes. These are heady times for Fulham FC, a club founded in 1879 that faced extinction only a few years ago. The money of Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has not only secured the club's future, but has turned them into a real force in English football. Their meteoric rise has now led them into the Premiership after storming to the First Division title last season with over a hundred points. French maestro Jean Tigana now has Fulham playing exciting, attacking football, and it seems only a matter of time before one of the richest clubs in the English game becomes one of the best. Tickets for matches cost 13-17 GBP, with season tickets at 300-350 GBP (with reductions available for over-65s and children). The home ground, at Craven Cottage, seats over 19,500. The 5th of November commemorates the failure of renegade Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up Parliament for religious motives in 1605. On this chilly night, everyone convenes in various parks throughout London to ooh and ahh at the brilliant fireworks and to keep warm around the bonfire on which an effigy of the historical miscreant is burned. King John granted a charter for the Midsummer Fair back in 1211, though it now exists solely as a funfair. The Mayor of Cambridge still proclaims it open by throwing coins to assembled children. You'll find all your favourite rides here: dodgems, the pirate ship and the ghost train, as well as all the traditional food stalls candyfloss, hot dogs and toffee apples. Free admission. Newcastle Mela, the biggest Asian free festival in the north-east of England, is held in the wide open spaces of Exhibition Park on the edge of the city centre. The attractions include live music, food (the complex mixture of appetising smells you encounter as you walk around the park is indescribable), art and craft stalls, clothing, and there is a funfair for the kids. The wide popularity of this festival is attested to by the number of people who are not of Asian birth or descent who attend. Admission: free. See website for yearly particulars. Fun in the street |
St Giles Oxford OX1 |
This large outdoor funfair may turn Oxford's normal traffic problem into a nightmare, but it's worth it. Each year, locals come out in thousands to enjoy the rides, the fortune tellers and the candy floss. The fair completely fills St Giles for two days. In 1937, Sir John Betjeman wrote 'it is about the biggest fair in England... with freak shows, roundabouts... every sort of fairman finds it worth his while to come to St Giles.' The fair is open from early morning to late into the evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great George Street London, London SW1H 9JH http://www.parliament.uk/faq/l... |
On this day, the Queen opens Parliament. She, in regal regalia and crown, travels by carriage from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster to deliver the Queen's Speech to the assembled members of the upper and lower houses. The members of the Commons are summoned to the Lords to hear the speech, but in a demonstration of the political independence of the lower house its doors are ceremonially slammed in the messenger's face before the summons is obeyed. The State Opening of Parliament marks the start of the annual parliamentary session. See the website for further information and exact yearly dates. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ancient farmers' rite |

A real oddity of local tradition, the Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival is a revival of an ancient farming rite which takes place in early January. A ploughman is dressed up in straw (the straw bear) and leads a procession of dancers and folk musicians through the village. The week leading up to the procession is marked by concerts and a ceilidh, and the Saturday procession sees all the village pubs packed out, with Morris dancers performing at each one. In the evening there are barn dances and ceilidhs, and on the Sunday the straw bear is burnt. Review © 2007, Wcities |
