Galleria d'Arte Moderna

Modern Art Museum
Piazza Pitti, 1
Florence 50125
Italy

This collection of around 2,000 works of art is situated on the second floor of the Palazzo Pitti. The Macchiaioli, precursors to the French Impressionist movement, the famous Tuscan group of the 19th century, are well represented here, with their pictures in which reality is represented through realistic personal expressions. The subjects of the paintings were principally inspired by nature and everyday life and these are expressed through spots of color and luminarist contrasts. At the head of the movement was Giovanni Fattori of whom there are numerous works exhibited, amongst which the Rotonda Palmieri and a whole series of landscapes and representations of Maremma life. The gallery also displays the work of living contemporary artists. Admission: EUR 8.50 and includes entry to the Galleria Palatina e Appartamenti Reali.

The Costume gallery is located on the top floor of the Palazzo Pitti. The exhibition illustrates the evolution of fashion from the 16th century to around 1930 by showing a series of characteristic clothes for each period. Accessories and underwear are displayed in the showcases on the walls. The ballroom was used for displays on subjects which concerned fashion. There is also an interesting display of the burial clothes of Grand Duke Cosimo I de'Medici, his wife Eleonora of Toledo and one of their sons, Garzia - wonderfully preserved and restored garments from the 16th century. Admission: EUR 6 and includes entry to the Museo delle Porcellane, Giardino di Boboli, Museo degli Argenti and the Museo Bardini.
