This is one of the best restaurants in Florence, and without doubt the most expensive given the nature of its cuisine and the value of its wine cellar. You are advised to book in advance, at which time you will also be able to choose items from the menu and select your wine in advance. The restaurant is truly sought-after, as are the dishes served up here - created by the wonderfully imaginative chefs. They are all guided by Signora Pinchiorri, Annie Féolde, who personally takes charge of the running of the restaurant. Reservation absolutely necessary. Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket. Fiaschetteria Nuvoli is quite small but great for a quick lunch, conveniently located next to the Baptistery and the Duomo. It is always very crowded: lots of locals stop by for a sandwich and a glass of red wine standing at the counter, but there is seating in the basement if its a more substantial meal you're after. Nuvoli is also a fiaschetteria - a wine bar that sells flasks, dealing mostly in local vintages. The menu features plenty of crostini and bruschette, four or five different soups and pasta dishes, seasonal vegetables and typical Tuscan meat courses such as roasted pork, tripe and beef stew… all at reasonable prices! -Maria Frullini

The food is simple and tasty but never overpriced. Its Tuscan antipasti are famous, as are the crostoni (fried bread) with beans. Typical dishes might be bread soup with tomato, risotto with pumpkin, spelt soup and cappellacci with thyme. The main meat courses are good, especially the bistecca alla fiorentina (steak). Florentines have been savoring the delicate wines and satisfying sandwiches from this eatery since 1875. Now run by a husband and wife duo, the place boasts of a wine rack tucked 5 feet deep into the back wall, as well as some of the best panini to be found in the city. A choice place for students, tourists and locals alike, this is one of the few fiaschetterias left from the days gone by. The sandwiches cost around EUR2-3, while the wine may be sipped at EUR1-2 a glass. Being rather small, the queues can be pretty long. So push up to the counter and watch your sandwich being prepared from fresh and marinated ingredients as you sip your wine. Most folks prefer to eat their snacks in the quiet, traffic-free zone just outside the little shop.

There are only the best chocolates here, such as the work of Andrea Slitti, world champion of artistic chocolate-making. The menu is made up of the best typical dishes of different traditions of cuisine. Oysters, soups, fish carpaccio, and plates of charcuterie and cheeses. The desserts are remarkable: after the chocolates, the Orient Express and coffee-flavored desserts stand out. Many of the baked goods (namely cakes, cheesecakes, muffins, cookies) come from the American bakery in town - Mr Jimmy's - and do not arise to the same standard as the other items actually prepared at Hemingway. There is a lot of wood and brickwork exposed rendering the atmosphere warm and pleasant. You can almost eat anything here, and it will be very good, but the best dish is the grilled meat: steak and roasted meat coupled with a salad filled with original ingredients. The pizzas are also good and seasonal produce is always used. There is a good list of local and regional wines.

Prices are not the cheapest in Florence (about EUR 5 a pint) but the authenticity is worth it! This is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the city. Its cooking is based on three distinct traditions, Canton, Szechuan and Zheijang and there are also styles from other oriental countries. It has a rather elegant setting with marble and velvet and varnished woods imported from China. It is further enriched by a summer garden which is full of statues and water games. Their specialties are Peking duck and the sea bass in squeezed fruit juices. There are also little capesante fish pancakes with sesame, rice with lotus leaves, chicken with mango. Open only for dinner except on weekends when lunch is served as well. Experience the magic of a Tuscan evening outside during the summer months when dinner is offered in the garden under the trees. Traditional Tuscan fare is the specialty here - affettati (cold cuts) and fettunta, an entrée of fried or grilled meats and vegetables, is a must try. -Maria Frullini

This venue is well-liked by locals who appreciate its food and the warm, friendly atmosphere. Some very good soups are on the menu and there is fresh pasta with various sauces. Among the main courses are Livorno-style cod with chickpeas, Florentine tripe, lamb stuffed with artichokes and potatoes, and escalopes with mushroom sauce. The subterranean dining room, located in a real cave, is characterized by its wooden furniture and candlelit atmosphere.

Trattoria Marione is an authentic old style trattoria in the heart of Florence, just off the elegant via Tornabuoni. It is always crowded and quite often there is a line out the door. Local home style cooking is the trademark of the place, with typical dishes such as Crostini Toscani. They specialize in traditional bread soups like Ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, but the zuppa di farro (made from spelt, a grain popular in Tuscany) and classic mixed boiled and roasted meats are also particularly tasty. Friendly service and great food at reasonable prices! -Maria Frullini

Simple, Delicious Tuscan Fare

Italy

Reservations are necessary to score a seat at this small, narrow restaurant. In operation since 1869, the trattoria excels at the yummy, no-frills cuisine for which Tuscany is famous. Their specialties include steak, chicken, artichoke pie and tripe. These deceptively plain-sounding dishes are the backbone of a hand-written menu. Lining the walls of the trattoria are framed scrapbook pages that feature photos and scribbled accolades of celebrity customers – among them poet Ezra Pound, novelist John Steinbeck, artist Marc Chagall and director Steven Spielberg, who dined here just two years ago. -Hana Alberts

If you want to eat fish - some really good fish, then you should visit the Trattoria del Pesce. Although not central you won't regret seeking it out, because this is one of the best restaurants in Florence and the surrounding province. The fresh fish is delivered to the restaurant every day and you can really taste the difference. There are all sorts of dishes available, and all can be accompanied by one of the many white wines on offer. The restaurant is decorated in a simple fashion.

On warm summer evenings it is a pleasure dining al fresco under the Linden trees in the back garden of this old fashioned trattoria in the hills of Fiesole just outside Florence. Opened in 1897, the restaurant used to be a popular spot with the workers of the Maiano sandstone quarries (cave in Italian) that supplied the gray stone used to in many of the Renaissance Florentine buildings. The quarries are no longer in use but the restaurant remains a peaceful getaway. Regional cooking is highlighted with local fresh products and a great deal of attention to old, traditional recipes. Hot and cold crostini, "chicken under a brick" and grilled meat are delicious choices. -Maria Frullini

After years of closure, this once legendary cinema is enjoying something of a Renaissance as an enormous bar, restaurant and entertainment complex. People come here for a relaxing drink after work and then go on for something to eat in the restaurant, (which offers anything from pizza to gourmet and international cuisine), rounding off the evening with live cabaret, fashion shows or concerts. They have a huge private car park, accessible from Via della Fonderia (situated between Via dell'Anconella and Via Felice Cavallotti).

Vietnam Saigon

French and Chinese cuisine
Via del Ponte alle Mosse, 8r
Florence 50145
Italy
+39 55 35 0541
Among a wide representation of international restaurants, this is the only Vietnamese restaurant of the city. The cuisine is strongly influenced by French cooking and is more delicate and sophisticated than Chinese food. The atmosphere is simple and welcoming. It is less kitsch than most Oriental restaurants (although that is not saying much). We don't know if this is real Vietnamese cuisine but the menu offers the typically spicy flavors of the Asian palate. On the menu there are rolled rice leaves, fried soy cakes, spicy lemon chicken, meat with yellow soy shoots. Tea or oriental beer is served.

Silvana Vivoli inherited the family business from her grandfather, Raffaello, who opened up shop on this narrow street in 1930. Every day, with her brother-in-law and two kitchen aides, she makes from scratch the creamy gelato for which her small store is famous. Though the most popular flavors are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, the rich chocolate hazelnut (nocciola) and the rice (riso) flavors are worth at least a taste. Silvana recommends combining at least two to four flavors in a single cup, which you can devour while people watching from the steps nearby Santa Croce. -Hana Alberts

Piazza de Rossi, 1r
Florence 50123

This small vintage wine seller, just a stones throw from the Ponte Vecchio, is the perfect place for people who love good wine. They have two strings to their bow - the wine shop and the wine bar, and between the two of them over a hundred prestigious French and Italian wines are on offer. Periodically there are guided wine tastings exploring Californian, Chilean and New Zealand wines. To go with the wines excellent Brie cheese is served as well as Pecorino, ribollita, meats, pâté, savory cakes and herrings. The desserts are all homemade and change every day. Service is over the counter and during the summer one can sit at little tables outside in the piazza.

Since the early 1970s, this bar has kept one unchanging feature: the nearly exclusively young customers who go there. It is the perfect place for any time of day and it caters for all tastes and all budgets. You can spend an evening with your friends here in a chaotic but friendly atmosphere. The place's informality is accentuated by its modern look, long opening hours and flexible menu. They serve homemade tagliolini or spaghetti with prawns, Gorgonzola or asparagus. There are also the classic hamburgers, salads and tasty pizzas. Wide choice of international beers and drinks.

Located in the Careggi zone, this small restaurant provides genuine, traditional Tuscan food ignoring current fads. Through a rather spartan entrance that brings to mind a village shop, you reach a large room with red, varnished wooden flooring, blue chairs and modern, refined lamps. The menu consists of classical items such as pasta, chickpeas, minestrone, mussels, risotto with saffron, meat lasagna, squid, roast pork, and cod in a red sauce. Wines are all of local origin.

In summer, Wednesday evening is "Frozen Night" featuring all kinds of iced drinks and aperitifs cocktails - perfect on a warm Tuscan night.
