Badiani

Home of Buontalenti Gelato
Viale dei Mille 20r
Florence 50131
Italy

Apparent by the double-parked cars out front, people come from all around to enjoy Badiani's. It is said that the much loved flavor Buontalenti was created here! This unique cream-flavored gelato was said to have been named after Bernardo Buontalenti, the famous Mannerist architect and artist. He is believed to have invented frozen dessert (made of cream and fruits) for the Medici's extravagant court banquets. Among the most popular flavors are: Buontalenti, Pinolata, Stracciatella...but there are many more including lighter fruit flavors. Also offering fresh pastries, the cream and apple sfogliatelle are well worth a trip. -Maria Frullini

Juicy lemons and fresh pistachio nuts are just some of the ingredients specially brought over to the mainland from Sicily by the native islanders that run this fabulous ice cream shop. All ice cream is made from seasonal ingredients and different flavors of crushed ice drinks are available each day. The shop is well known for its authentic gelato and sorbet, as well as a breakfast of coffee granita and whipped cream with a warm brioche roll -typically Sicilian. A variety of other mouth-watering Sicilian desserts are also on offer. There is another shop in piazza San Jacopino, over by Santa Maria Novella station. This excellent, traditional gelateria can be found behind the Piazza della Signoria where ice cream flavored with fruits which are in season can be enjoyed and semifreddi. The flavors are always changing and there is a lot of originality, including yogurt and soy gelato.

Perché no! (Why not!) is one of Florence's traditional gelaterie. It was established in 1939 and not even World War II stopped their production! Located in the central shopping area a few meters off Piazza Signoria, home-made gelato and semifreddi are produced in the laboratory on the back of the small shop using natural ingredients and following traditional recipes. Classical flavors as well as new and innovative creations abound, and fancy something lighter, there are sorbets and sherbets made with real, seasonal fruits! There is also a wide selection of gluten-free flavors, and even a gluten-free ice cream cone! -Maria Frullini

Since 1872, this traditional café-bar has served magnificent hot chocolate and exquisite cocktails and aperitifs to an appreciative public. In summer, order rolls, salads, light snacks and delicious home-made desserts to be enjoyed on its huge terrace opposite the Palazzo Vecchio in one of the city's most beautiful squares. This spot is the perfect place for people watching and stunning views of the artistic sculptures on the Piazza della Signoria. Although chocolate is the theme here, there is also coffee and wine available.

Vivoli

Family-Run
Via dell'Isola delle Stinche 7r
Florence 50122
Italy

http://www.vivoli.it
Silvana Vivoli inherited the family business from her grandfather, Raffaello, who opened up shop on this narrow street in 1930. Every day, with her brother-in-law and two kitchen aides, she makes from scratch the creamy gelato for which her small store is famous. Though the most popular flavors are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, the rich chocolate hazelnut (nocciola) and the rice (riso) flavors are worth at least a taste. Silvana recommends combining at least two to four flavors in a single cup, which you can devour while people watching from the steps nearby Santa Croce. -Hana Alberts
