The oldest restaurant in the city
Viale Don Minzoni, 3r
Florence 50136
Italy
+39 55 57 8291
This first-class restaurant is one of the oldest in the city. During the 1920s it was already well-known and has never lost its shine. The atmosphere is characterized by green and brown colors, and the use of elegant decorations which don't distract the eye. Aside from a rich menu of meat and fish it is possible to order pizza from a wood oven. One of the best first courses is the shellfish spaghetti. Also polenta and Porcini mushrooms, spicy mussels, marinated salmon, venison bresaola with rucola, thinly-sliced beef, and ossobuco with beans. The wine cellar is good and contains local wines.

It serves a huge range of crostini, sandwiches, a selection of cheeses (especially fresh and matured Pecorino), cold cuts and also roasted pig directly from the rotisserie across the street run by the same owner. All'Antico Vinaio has only a few seats inside so there is always a mixed crowd of tourists and locals eating standing up on the street in front of it. This restaurant can be rather hard to find; the entrance is a narrow, green door which leads directly into a welcoming atmosphere, popular both with locals and tourists. The service is prompt, friendly and attentive. The set menu is written up on the wall and the dishes change according to season and are made with fresh ingredients. The vegetable and salad starters are particularly good. There is also a good choice of Tuscan and Italian wines.

It is still possible to find the typical Florentine dishes in the old quarter of San Frediano. This charming restaurant is quietly fashionable and characteristic of local tradition. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed and is lit by candle light. In the summer, you can eat in the small romantic courtyard surrounded by greenery. Traditional dishes have been imaginatively reinvented: there is fresh pasta made in house, toasts, dishes cooked in butter and salmon. Don't miss the tagliolini colored with black octopus ink, the ravioli with ricotta and black cabbage pesto, the spelt and Porcini mushroom soup. For the second course, the black cabbage, the rabbit with artichokes and the steak fillet stand out. The Tuscan wines are very good.

It is possible to order the best quality steaks of the region, but this must be ordered in advance. Florentines have been savoring the delicate wines and satisfying sandwiches from this eatery since 1875. Now run by a husband and wife duo, the place boasts of a wine rack tucked 5 feet deep into the back wall, as well as some of the best panini to be found in the city. A choice place for students, tourists and locals alike, this is one of the few fiaschetterias left from the days gone by. The sandwiches cost around EUR2-3, while the wine may be sipped at EUR1-2 a glass. Being rather small, the queues can be pretty long. So push up to the counter and watch your sandwich being prepared from fresh and marinated ingredients as you sip your wine. Most folks prefer to eat their snacks in the quiet, traffic-free zone just outside the little shop.

Since 1912, this typical Florence restaurant has maintained a high profile as well as a faithful following, due to its good food and low prices. Among the homemade main courses, the tomato ravioli and the excellent minestra di farro are among the best, although the bollita di manzo occupies the place of honor on the menu. Fish is served on Fridays. The wine list is good as are the house wines.

Not easy to find at all, this little restaurant proves to be a gem, once discovered. It's a typical Italian home to the uninitiated, but the locals know the routine well. The lady of the house, Signora Piombini is the dominant figure in here. Don't look for a menu; she will tell you what's cooking. Good, hot, meals are served, that would make any Italian mamma smile with pleasure, for they are healthy and wholesome.

This one-stop pub, pizzeria and restaurant resolves the frequently encountered problem of finding a place to eat that will keep everyone happy. Choose from the English-style pub's cozy surroundings for sandwiches and a beer, from the wide selection available at the circular bar; the upstairs pizzeria with extra seating available in the circular gallery overhead; or the more intimate, small restaurant for a wide range of pasta and meat dishes.

This is one of Florence's best-loved restaurants. After 65 years of history it still has the reputation with which it began: good Tuscan cooking with few allowances for current fashion. It has all the classic dishes as well as some gems like the controfiletto with balsamic vinegar or the fisherman's scampi. The wine cellar has all the big labels of Tuscany and aged wines from good years. In the simple and elegant room guests quickly feel at ease thanks to the friendly and professional staff.

A classic, yet never boring restaurant, ideal for lovers of good food, accompanied by a relaxing ambiance. Very welcoming, attentive atmosphere with a particularly interesting table and service system. Both the fish and meat menus are of equal quality and originality. The swordfish and prawn salad, the sturgeon fish with four peppers, the beef filet alla Freisa, fried cow's brains and bittersweet pears are all delicious. There is a very good selection of local wines.

One of the oldest trattorie in Florence, Bibe has belonged to the same family for 150 years. Located in the Galluzzo hills, they offer typical Tuscan cooking with a very good choice of wines. Open only for dinner except on weekends when lunch is served as well. Experience the magic of a Tuscan evening outside during the summer months when dinner is offered in the garden under the trees. Traditional Tuscan fare is the specialty here - affettati (cold cuts) and fettunta, an entrée of fried or grilled meats and vegetables, is a must try. -Maria Frullini

The subterranean dining room, located in a real cave, is characterized by its wooden furniture and candlelit atmosphere.

Trattoria Marione is an authentic old style trattoria in the heart of Florence, just off the elegant via Tornabuoni. It is always crowded and quite often there is a line out the door. Local home style cooking is the trademark of the place, with typical dishes such as Crostini Toscani. They specialize in traditional bread soups like Ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, but the zuppa di farro (made from spelt, a grain popular in Tuscany) and classic mixed boiled and roasted meats are also particularly tasty. Friendly service and great food at reasonable prices! -Maria Frullini

Trattoria Sostanza-Troia

Simple, Delicious Tuscan Fare
Via dell Porcellana 25/r
Florence 50123
Italy
+39 055 212 691
Reservations are necessary to score a seat at this small, narrow restaurant. In operation since 1869, the trattoria excels at the yummy, no-frills cuisine for which Tuscany is famous. Their specialties include steak, chicken, artichoke pie and tripe. These deceptively plain-sounding dishes are the backbone of a hand-written menu. Lining the walls of the trattoria are framed scrapbook pages that feature photos and scribbled accolades of celebrity customers – among them poet Ezra Pound, novelist John Steinbeck, artist Marc Chagall and director Steven Spielberg, who dined here just two years ago. -Hana Alberts

On warm summer evenings it is a pleasure dining al fresco under the Linden trees in the back garden of this old fashioned trattoria in the hills of Fiesole just outside Florence. Opened in 1897, the restaurant used to be a popular spot with the workers of the Maiano sandstone quarries (cave in Italian) that supplied the gray stone used to in many of the Renaissance Florentine buildings. The quarries are no longer in use but the restaurant remains a peaceful getaway. Regional cooking is highlighted with local fresh products and a great deal of attention to old, traditional recipes. Hot and cold crostini, "chicken under a brick" and grilled meat are delicious choices. -Maria Frullini
