Weddings, readings, and music |
3010 De Soto Boulevard Coral Gables, FL 33134 +1 305 448 7421 |
This lovely Spanish-style church, located across the street from the Biltmore Hotel, has the distinction of being the very first church built in Coral Gables. Although modern churches, and especially congregational churches, are traditionally austere, here wooden pews, altar candelabra, chandeliers, and side arches signal the lush standards of a different era. The intimate setting that results makes this church a favorite site for weddings. In addition, the church hosts author readings sponsored by Books & Books and features a wonderful musical series. Call for the schedule of events and additional information. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nationally-known minister and organist |
5555 North Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 +1 954 771 8840 http://www.crpc.org/ letters@coralridge.org |
Televised nationally, services at this huge church feature the music of a massive pipe organ played by an organist who gives frequent concerts and has made a number of recordings available at the church. Beautiful stained glass soars skyward in its architecture. The minister, while controversial for his very conservative stand on a number of issues, has a wide following locally and nationally. Sunday services are at 8:45a, 11:15a and 6:30p. National and international performers also appear in a fall-winter series of concerts that have starred, among many others, the Vienna Boys Choir. Stunning and powerful |
1933-1945 Meridian Avenue Miami Beach, FL 33139 +1 305 538 1663 http://www.holocaustmmb.org/ |
Conceived in 1984 by a group of Miami's holocaust survivors, this memorial was dedicated in 1990. Although it is a solemn reminder of crimes against humanity, it is also an inspiration that this kind of genocide never happens again. The Sculpture of Love and Anguish, the focal point of the site, overwhelms the visitor, as do the thousands of victims' names etched into the luminous black granite Memorial Wall. A memorable experience a few blocks from Miami Beach Convention Center. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

America's oldest mission |
30 Ocean Ave St. Augustine, FL 32084 +1 904 824 3045 |
Turn back the clock and soak up some fascinating history at Americas first mission, founded in 1565 in St Augustine. It was at this site that Menendez knelt to kiss the wooden cross presented to him by Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the chaplain of his expedition, and here that Lopez celebrated the first parish mass and began his missionary work. A bronze memorial to Father Lopez stands on the lagoon's eastern bank, along with the Great Cross, erected as a memorial of the Mission's 400th anniversary. Admission is free.
