Bonnet House

Historic home of Evelyn Bartlett
900 North Birch Road
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304
United States
+1 954 563 5393
http://www.bonnethouse.org/
Built in 1921, this historic two-story, 35-acre waterfront house was once the winter home of artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Evelyn. The Bonnet House is serenely elegant and preserved amidst the urban expansion of Fort Lauderdale Beach, which is what makes the land so special. Mrs. Bartlett, who died in 1997, gave the estate to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983 in order to keep the property unchanged. Several concerts and events are held here throughout the year, and the house is available for private events such as weddings. Named for a waterlily that once inhabited the property, the Bonnet House is open year-round for guided tours. Admission: $15 for adults, $13 for senior citizens, $11 for students ages 6-18, free for children under 6 and Bonnet House Members. A 'Grounds Only' visit is $9.

A great (and economical) way to get on the water and start fishing is with Flamingo Fishing. After a short 20 minute trip, your rod will be baited and your line cast out to attract a variety of fish: wahoo, cobia, sailfish, grouper, and many more. Flamingo has been operating for close to 10 years and their experience pays off in their catches. Prices: $30 for adults and $20 for children under 12. There are 3 trips: 8a–Noon, 1p–5p, and 7p–11p. You receive free bait, rods, fishing instruction, and parking

These folks operate two kinds of fishing craft, a charter boat that rents for half day for up to six anglers and a drifter fishing craft that goes out twice a day at 8am and 1pm and takes a crowd along. If you don't mind sharing the charter boat with others, there's a single person deal for four hours of deep-sea fishing. All deals include bait, rod, reel, tackle, license and even a cooler to keep something wet and store the catch. Night trips often take place as well, so call for details.

Hugh Taylor Birch Rec. Area

Tropical gardens, rare wildlife
3109 East Sunrise Boulevard
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304
United States
+1 954 564 4521
This 180-acre park was given by Hugh Taylor Birch to the state of Florida. Birch came to Florida in the last part of the 19th century and promptly fell in love with the area; he eventually purchased more than three miles of oceanfront property in the little town of Fort Lauderdale. More than 100 years later, Fort Lauderdale is a busy metropolis, and Birch's land thrives as a wildlife preserve and botanical wonderland. A number of animal and plant species have found a safe home here alongside the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Visitors are free to hike or bike the designated trails, canoe around the lagoon, take a dip in the ocean and visit Birch's home, which is open to the public. Excellent camping facilities are available.

Fort Lauderdale, FL 33323

Florida without water would be...well, Kansas. Likewise, to come to the Sunshine State without doing something on or in all that water seems...well, you get it. So get in it or on it, perhaps both if you're not too coordinated, at this operation that rents waverunners, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, boogie boards, small motorboats and pretty much anything that moves on H2O. For those who absolutely refuse to have anything to do with the wet stuff, there are umbrellas and lounge chairs for rent, tanning oil for sale and a Captain Jack's Oceanfront Tiki Bar here at this watersports center tucked behind the Royal Vista Beach Resort. Waverunners, are $45 a half hour, $70 an hour and an hour's a long time on one of these babies. You've got to be 20 years old to rent one, but no other skills are required. They can also get you floating about in the sky over the water on a parasailing trip.
