There's lots to do and see in this growing corner of southwest Florida and it's all wonderful. Visit wildlife refuges, learn about the past through historic buildings and museums, discover the ecosystem, explore secret inlets and coves by canoe or kayak, fish to your heart's delight, or just relax under a shaded palm and soak in the majestic tropical atmosphere.

Downtown

In downtown Fort Myers, the 105-acre Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium has a museum, an aviary, nature trails and picnic areas. This is an excellent place to start. With tours and a nature shop, you'll find there's a lot to learn and enjoy.

Cape Coral

For some family water fun just across the Caloosahatchee River in Cape Coral to the north of the city, there's plenty of action, rides and activities from March to October at the Sun Splash Family Waterpark.

Culture/History

For an appreciation of the culture and history of the area, the Cape Coral Historical Society Museum offers a fascinating insight into early Florida settlement days. Much has changed since the days of sawgrass and palmetto ranges.

Also, children will be enthralled with both the indoor and outdoor exhibits at the Children's Science Center.

For other historic landmarks in the Downtown district, visit the 1901 Burroughs Home, and the Florida Repertory Theatre, also built in 1901, where plays and musical productions are performed to the enjoyment of the community.

For more historic information on the development and settlement of the area during the days of cattle drives, the Civil War, and the Seminole Indians, don't miss the Fort Myers Historical Museum and the Imaginarium.

Nightspots

For a little adult night life, an evening out on the town can include the Lido Cafe, a popular place for Latin beat, dining and dancing. Or try the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre for terrific food served buffet style with lavish desserts and some great live entertainment. There's also the Groove Street Grille & Discotheque where nostalgic music and delicious food make a great combination.

Country Music

For light entertainment, there's country music fun at the Ricochet or family activities at Gator Lanes.

Gambling

For some Las Vegas style gambling action, try a few hours on the Big "M" Casino Cruise.

Shopping

For the avid shopper, there's plenty to discover, from flea markets to upscale shopping centers such as the Edison Mall. On Estero Island, south of Fort Myers, you can spend the day purusing 100 brand name outlet stores at Miromar Outlets.

There's more shopping on charming Sanibel Island. Don't miss the bargain shops at Tanger Factory Stores Sanibel with 56 stores. For the flea market aficionado, Fort Myers offers the Fleamasters Fleamarket with 900 booths of all manner of treasures, collectibles, and junk you can't live without, but where you'll definitely spend a few hours of fun spending a few dollars and chatting with the locals. There's another great mega flea market just north of Fort Myers at the Northside Drive-In Flea Market with 300 booths.

Professional Sports

The professional sports enthusiast will also have the chance to watch his favorite team from up north at the Boston Red Sox Spring Training or the Minnesota Twins Spring Training. In Fort Myers Beach and Estero, there's more spectator sports for the avid fan, such as Florida Sea Dragons Basketball Team, the Florida Firecats Arena Football Team, and the Florida Everblades Ice Hockey Team.

Action/Outdoors

Inline skating anyone? The family can spend a few hours at the Fort Myers Skatium and take a break from the warm summer climate. In South Fort Myers, learn all about oranges and grapefruit and the citrus industry with tours at the Sun Harvest Citrus from November-April. You'll learn about the growing and harvesting of this popular southern fruit.

There's also plenty to discover about the environment and ecology of the area through eco-tours offered through Everglades Day Safari.

Also in Estero, there is well known Koreshan State Historic Site, a legacy from a community sect that left its mark on the area and made significant contributions to its settlement.

On Sanibel and Captiva, the only museum devoted solely to sea shells is the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. For outdoor fun and wildlife discovery, a visit to the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a must.

From Captiva, take an enjoyable cruise and watch dolphins and beautiful sunsets on the Captiva Cruises. Cruises are 90-minutes or half-days.

Also in North Fort Myers along the Tamiami Trail, a terrific shop for all kinds of sea shells is the Shell Factory.

So for entertainment, you can discover all the wonderful places where you can learn about the region, its tranquil but sensitive environment, its history, as well as many cultural and sporting events. Or you can simply do nothing but relax and enjoy nature's gifts all around, and that is a good thing.

Northwest of Fort Myers, Cape Coral was originally laid out to resemble the Venice of Italy on the Gulf of Mexico. The man-made canal systems were instrumental in its residential and commercial growth and expansion. As the second largest Florida city after Jacksonville, its population is now well over 100,000. With more than 30 parks, there are numerous boardwalks and trails through ecological preserves, playgrounds, and picnic facilities. Armadillos, box turtles, bobcats, coyotes, bald eagles burrowing owls and foxes can be seen in the wild.

Sanibel Island

Fort Myers
United States
Southwest of Fort Myers is the popular island of Sanibel, 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, connected at a narrow point. 2500 years ago, the island was inhabited by Calusa Indians who created the islands from mounds of discarded seashells, used for food, weapons, tools and building materials. With a reputation for great fishing, windsurfing, shell collecting, bird watching and other outdoor pursuits, the best way to get around the island is by bicycle. Golf and tennis are available here at the Dunes Golf & Tennis Club on the eastern end of the island, the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa and the Beachview Golf Club on the western side. The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, named after Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling, a conservationist and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist.
