Sundance Square's fabulous 8.0 Restaurant and Bar is popular with all ages who want healthy, delicious food at almost any hour. The dinner hour lasts late for theater goers who are hungry at 10:30pm; no drink is impossible at the bar. At the opposite end of the spectrum, but still in Sundance Square, is Billy Miner's Saloon, where half-pound burgers, steak or grilled chicken sandwiches, and ice cold longnecks or frozen Margaritas are the order of the day.

Upscale casual Mexican food can be found at Cabo, The Original MixMex Grill. It is a blend of South and Central American, Yucatan, and Southwestern flavors. A red and yellow neon sign marks the spot; mounted sailfish and TVs tuned to sports characterize the interior. Caravan of Dreams is an unusual multi-floor performing arts center with a spectacular rooftop bar, an intimate live music club on the first floor, and a 212-seat theater on the second floor. Food is fairly basic, since you are there to be entertained rather than to eat fancy food&emdash;and be sure to arrive early: serving stops before the headliner's show.

Ellington's Southern Table offers fabulous Southern home cooking in a cool dark interior with exposed red brick walls and dark wood tables and accents. Choose from steak, seafood, ribs, fried chicken, meat loaf or pot roast to name a few entrees; sides include mashed potatoes (of course!), butter beans and black-eyed peas, and fresh turnip greens among others. Beer and wine are available. Firehall Marketplace Deli is actually a fast food restaurant with no drive-through—you walk to it when you are downtown. With a good variety of breakfast goodies priced very comfortably, plenty of choices in lunch sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, or pizza, and loaded baked potatoes with non-alcoholic beverages, this is a favorite with Fort Worth downtowners.

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, another Shannon Wynne (of 8.0 fame) concept that has been repeated across the country. With 225 varieties of beer, a large game room, and live entertainment, the Emporium has quickly become a favorite. There is also a section with shirts, ballcaps, and the like to buy for souvenirs—and of course, food.

Great American Steakhouse and Pub is one of Fort Worth's top restaurants, offering succulent steaks, margarita crab cakes, roast chicken, unusual appetizers, yeast breads, and yummy desserts. Elegant décor is the order of the day, along with attentive service and a full bar. An upscale bistro with a true international flavor, Pangaea boasts Japanese décor, a Taiwanese owner/chef, and foods of the world. From pasta to seafood, fish to game, and beef and pork to vegetarian delights, the menu is varied enough to please the pickiest palate. Parthenon, while on the subject of international fare, is downtown's Greek bistro, offering traditional Greek goodies like moussaka, pastitsio, stuffed grape leaves and, of course, gyros at lunch and adding lamb, beef, and pork for dinner.

Randall's Cafe, Wine Bar, ∧ Cheesecakery, thought by some to have the best cheesecake in Texas, has added sea scallops, guinea hen, steak, pasta, and yellowfin tuna to its fare. The wine list, though limited, complements the entrees perfectly. And guess what's for dessert in 60 varieties? There is also a Euro-style market where you can buy dry pasta, wine, and, of course, cheesecake.

Reata, on the 35th floor of the Bank One building, is decorated like an elegant Texas cattle ranch; beef, of course, is the primary entrée. Still, game, fish, and fowl have places of honor on the menu as well, along with southwestern traditional dishes. The bar is well stocked to provide almost any drink you can think of.

Reflections at The Worthington Hotel offers romantic ambience with a business casual dress code. The menu is full of exotic entrees, unusual accompaniments, and desserts like poppy-seed soufflé and boysenberry ice cream sundaes. Of course, there's a fully stocked bar. Sundance Market and Deli is also a coffeehouse, bakery and cafeteria where weekend guests hear live jazz by local artists. Gourmet salads, meat loaf, and King Ranch chicken are featured along with awesome veggies, deli sandwiches you build yourself, fresh desserts, and gourmet coffee.

It is always Mardi Gras at Razzoo's Cajun Café, where the meat and seafood are often blackened and the boudin spicy. The spectacular drinks from the full bar, together with the seafood-heavy menu, will make you swear you are in New Orleans!

If drinking is higher on your list than eating, try the Black Dog Tavern. Pool tables and dartboards join comfortable chairs and mahogany stools to invite relaxing; Colorado Black Dog Ale is featured along with other varieties. Music is important here, with open-mike amateur night on Thursdays and jazz jams on Sundays. Or try the Springbok Pub, operated by former South African Warren Coetzer as a tribute to his home country's hospitality and the sport of rugby. The game room has billiards and darts and a huge rugby video library; domestic and imported lager, beer, and ale are featured with many brands on tap and specialty brews available in bottles.

South

The Balcony of Ridglea is a romantic supper club featuring late-night dining on weekends with traditional continental cuisine and Sunday brunch, when the full bar does serve champagne and mimosas! Café Aspen offers contemporary American fare in a country club atmosphere with live music on weekends. From champagne salmon to walnut-crusted chicken breast or grilled beef tenderloin with blackberry Beaujolais sauce, the selections are tempting. Extensive wine list is available by the bottle or glass.

Edelweiss Restaurant offers Bavarian charm and substantial fare. Wine is available, but there is a larger selection of domestic and imported beer, much of it on tap. Typical pizzeria décor without checked tablecloths accompanies the smell of fresh baked pizza dough at Palermo's. Targeted toward family fun, Palermo's menu features pizza, sub sandwiches, and homemade pastas; espresso, coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

For a taste of Old World Germany complete with a cuckoo clock, try the Bavarian Bakery and Café. The food is hearty and German, the desserts sweet, and the classic beer and wine selection very German.

Magnolia Avenue

Bangkok City offers contemporary cuisine with shabby chic décor in a recently renovated area just west of downtown. Featuring mostly seafood highlighted by unusual spices, its lunch buffet serves as a sampler of the extensive variety of entrees. BJ Keefer's is a local favorite because of its relaxed atmosphere and great specialty burgers, all hand formed and grilled over an open flame. Chicken fried steak and grilled catfish are also on the local favorite list. A great Tex-Mex tradition turns healthy at Hot Damn, Tamales! Maintaining their delicious spicy taste, the tamales are cooked with vegetable shortening instead of the traditional lard and include meat-filled and meatless varieties. You can buy tamales to eat in, take out, or frozen to take home.

Scampi's is a cozy lunch eatery with a great Italian menu—and a romantic dinner hideaway in the evenings with about twice the selection and ambiance offered at lunch. Traditional Italian entrees, crisp salads, and hearty soups are the order of the day; you can bring your own wine to enjoy with your meal if you like. A classic 1950s style diner, Paris Coffee Shop offers coffee, conversation, and substantial breakfast and lunch fare. Choose eggs any style with bacon and toast for breakfast; lunch selections include fried chicken, liver and onions, and catfish; and desserts are yummy.

King Tut Restaurant features Egyptian, Greek, and Middle Eastern cuisine; the sampler appetizer includes a variety of goodies you may not have tried before. Entrees come with Greek salads and include unusual combinations of meats and vegetables and spices; vegetarians will love all their choices here. Desserts feature baklava and Turkish coffee.

Cultural District/TCU

Bella Italia features unusual game dishes like buffalo, elk, ostrich, emu, quail, venison, Texas antelope, and caribou as well as traditional Italian recipes. Unique appetizers and side dishes enhance your dining experience; there is a full bar. Blue Mesa Grill is one of the top Southwestern restaurants in the Metroplex, featuring blue tortilla chips and house made sweet potato chips, blue crab and shrimp cakes, red chile crusted salmon, Texas rib eye, and a variety of Southwestern pastas. Of course, Blue Margaritas are the signature drink, or try a different drink made with one of their 50 premium tequilas.

Encore, opened in 1999, is an elegant French bistro where herbs, fresh vegetables, and beautiful presentations enhance each entrée. Soups, salads, and sandwiches are offered at lunch and as lighter alternatives for dinner. An extensive wine list offers pricing to fit any pocketbook. Four Star Coffee Bar, once a fish market, has been renovated with muraled walls and hand painted tables. Hand roasted coffee beans from around the world are featured here, along with flavored, decaffeinated coffees. Breakfast and lunch are served daily with a number of non-meat options as well as traditional roast beef, chicken, and tuna sandwiches.

For rowdy fun in a gaudy diner atmosphere, try Fred's Café. Mile high burgers and fresh fries are the order of the day here; Wednesday is pizza night and Fridays are Tex-Mex. Hoffbrau Steaks, one of Texas' most popular steak houses, has multiple locations across the Metroplex. With everything from a wide variety of steaks to chicken, burgers, and shrimp, there is something for everyone at Hoffbrau. The onion rings are to die for, but don't discount the fresh-cooked veggies. There is a good selection of beer including Scottish Ale, Pilsner, and Porter.

Some of Texas's best home cooking is offered at the Jubilee Café—crispy chicken fried steak, grilled pork chops, fried catfish, with fried green tomatoes (really!) or corn casserole. Country breakfasts are popular with the locals, and there plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Bellagio Italian Bistro offers traditional Italian fare with tasty sides and decadent desserts; beer and wins are available. For Mediterranean favorites with a New American twist, try Bistro Louise. Salads with the freshest ingredients accompany beef and seafood favorites, followed by unusual desserts and accompanied by wine or something stronger from the bar.

Family-owned Caro's Mexican Restaurant has been in business since 1947 with good reason: family recipes prepared from scratch using only the freshest ingredients. Unusual treatments of popular Mexican dishes are enhanced by authentic Mexican beer. Charleston's Steak House presents tasty appetizers, mouth-watering steak and seafood entrees with creatively prepared sides, and incredible desserts. With your meal, enjoy a glass of thoughtfully selected wine—or a thick milkshake!

Fishmonger's Seafood Market ∧ Grill, a former market, expanded into a delightful family-friendly restaurant serving all fresh fish, shrimp, and clams whose natural flavors are enhance with minimal seasonings. House specialty gumbo is full of fish, veggies, and Cajun spices for a hearty appetizer or main dish. Alcohol is served, though not from a full bar. Maritage offers New American cuisine with an Italian flair. Rich game or seafood entrees and unusual sides at dinner are complemented by sandwiches, pasta, and veggie dishes at lunch. Luscious desserts and a full bar complete the experience.

Unique pastas, hearty salads, and creative presentations characterize lunches at Michael's Restaurant and Ancho Chile Bar. Dinner is even more spectacular, with traditional southwestern fare served up with the flavor of Mexico. The Ancho Bar is cigar-friendly for ladies and gentlemen. Milano's Pizza and Pasta Restaurant is just that, serving up traditional pasta and pizza with huge house salads with tangy tomato-basil vinaigrette dressing.

Menus that change with the seasons characterize the global flavor of The Pegasus. From unique appetizers through delightfully outrageous entrees and a thoughtful wine selection, each dish is a gourmet moment all by itself. Put it all together for a truly memorable dining experience. By contrast, the Railhead Smokehouse is an unabashed Texas barbecue restaurant with tender ribs, juicy brisket, salami, chicken, bologna, ham, and turkey accompanied by traditional beans, potato salad, or coleslaw and finished off with a huge glass of iced tea combine for a real Texas meal. More than 35 Italian specialties are prepared in open kitchens at Romano's Macaroni Grill, where the tables are covered in butcher paper and crayons are provided to vent your creative urges. Menus are set by a team of chefs to ensure consistently high standards; house wines are in large jugs that you pour yourself on the honor system. Just tell the waiter how much you poured. Thick sandwiches, hearty soups, and homemade desserts make the Swiss Pastry Shop a favorite with locals. A wide assortment of unusual breads makes choosing a pleasure; order by the piece or whole to eat in or take out.

Szechuan Restaurant offers more than 150 items, all prepared from fresh ingredients. Tasty sauces served on the side enhance the flavors; dishes prepared with low-sodium soy sauce and fat-free ones are available. Sardines Ristorante Italiano is funky and fun, with a traditional Italian menu of pastas with savory sauces and lovely seafood, yummy desserts, and a full bar with excellent wines.

For teens and young Christians who want an alcohol-free, smoke-free place to enjoy music and dancing, Club 412, sponsored by a church, offers such an opportunity. Many members of the bands who play here plan to go into the ministry. Friday nights are for new dance steps and DJs; Saturdays are for harder core and rap artists. On either night, plentiful refreshments are available.

Stockyards Area

Cattlemen's Steak House, in the stockyards since 1947, is a beef institution where you choose your steak from the glass butcher case. If you are not a red meat eater, there is a good selection of superb seafood and chicken; legendary house specialties include the blue cheese vinaigrette and homemade dinner rolls. Popular California wines are featured on the wine list. El Asadero, a family-owned delight with a traditional Tex-Mex menu, offers all the standard favorites with a few surprises. Specialty meats are marinated and charbroiled Mexican style, and it is all very comfortably priced.

Sunday brunch all day on weekends is a nice addition to the usual at Esperanza's Bakery & Café. Along with traditional lunch and specialty items are offered unique Mexican-style breads and pastries, all in quaint cheery surroundings. The huge open hickory grill at H3 Ranch Grill in the legendary Stockyards Hotel gets your attention right away; it commands the whole area and is the reason for its uniqueness. Of course steak is the specialty here, but suckling pig and rainbow trout are also grilled on that monster, as are many of the sides. Weekend brunches are also awesome.

Not just another Mexican restaurant, Joe T. Garcia's is a Fort Worth institution. The setting is breathtaking, with fiesta gardens, colorful plants, and lots of pools and fountains; the specialty drinks made from a family recipe brought from Monterrey; and the food is the ultimate in Mexican cuisine.

For the ultimate party experience, be sure to visit Billy Bob's Texas. Multiple dance floors, country Western dancing lessons (free!), mechanical bull, live bull riding, cold beer, hot music from the biggest names in Country Western music, and a huge store with everything Western you can imagine—it's all at Billy Bob's.

And for a real Old West style saloon, there is the White Elephant Saloon. The décor is real down-home, with lots of western memorabilia and zillions of cowboy hats, elephant artifacts and elephants from all over the world! There is a brass foot rail at the bar, pool tables, a dance floor, and plenty of live or recorded music.

Other Areas

Keys Lounge is hopping with blues from Friday through Sunday, plus there are wild jam sessions on Thursdays. Many of the artists are recording live CDs as they perform. Darts and pool are available if you want more than just music; and there is a limited menu to keep you from starving.

Saltgrass Steak House is very Texas and very sort of rough-hewn, with a patio area overlooking a small lake. Hearty steak house fare includes steak, chicken, shrimp, sides, and Shiner Bock beer bread with a good wine list.

Ruffino's Ristorante Italiano, located in a high-dollar area, offers a romantic elegance with a new Italian menu full of gourmet options. Traditional fare is joined by salmon sciarpa and Portobello tower; a good selection of beer and wine complements the meal.

Pappasito's and its Cajun sibling Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen almost always pair up and locate next door to each other, as is the case here. The upscale Mexican food here is to die for; the quality is the best and the portions huge. There are always new gourmet items joining the traditional fajitas and enchiladas, and the service is impeccable.

J. Christen's Grill and Bar, just a couple of miles from Texas Motor Speedway, is a sports bar decorated in a racing motif, but it can still offer a romantic intimacy. No typical bar fare here—everything is prepared and presented beautifully (and spicily!), especially steak and burgers. Popular desserts and a full bar complete the experience.

Celaborelle offers West Asian food with an eclectic flair. Lamb, beef, and chicken as well as vegetarian options are served at both lunch and dinner at very comfortable prices.

A bandstand located in the center of the dining area features a small dance floor for those who enjoy polka; children and adults often crowd the floor to participate in the chicken dance. A reservation is generally required to obtain a table anywhere close to the action, but dining reservations are not otherwise required. Entertainment starts at 6:30p Sunday-Friday and at 7p on Saturdays. The hearty platters of schnitzel, fried potatoes, sauerbraten and wurst are authentic. Most entrees are accompanied with combinations of tart red cabbage, tangy sauerkraut or delicate, mouthwatering spaetzle dumplings. A small wine list adequately complements the cuisine, although emphasis is on the large selection of domestic and imported beer available on tap.

The Parthenon Greek Restsaurant opened its doors in 1997. Operated by Peter and Gus Katzianis, both originally from Cyprus, this eatery is in accordance with the authenticity and vibrant flair of its name. The surroundings are authentically Greek, complete with native music. Lunch specialties include baked moussaka and pastitsio, both of which are lasagna-like dishes. Dinner portions and choices expand. The most delectable feature is savory hummus and lamb chops. Additional selections include the lamb and the skewers of beef and pork, which are grilled and then topped with a cinnamon-tomato sauce.

Ruffino's Ristorante Italiano, located in an upscale Fort Worth neighborhood, has been a hit since 1992. Business professionals, couples and students from Texas Christian University come to enjoy the low-lit ambience and elegant atmosphere. While you eat, brothers/owners Franco and Bobby Albanese will probably stroll by your table to get an off-the-cuff critique of your meal. House specialties include the salmon sciarpa (grilled salmon in puffed pastry with a lemon caper piccata sauce) and the portobello tower, which is packed with mushrooms, breaded eggplant, spinach and feta cheese, all layered to structure a 4-inch tower. Traditional Italian dishes shine as well, including the frutti di mare with linguine, shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams.

This great steakhouse offers Texas favorites in the heart of Cowtown. The interior of Saltgrass Steak House has longhorn steer and deer heads perched on the walls, as well as Texas signs and other memorabilia. The perimeter of the restaurant is against a small lake, so there is ample opportunity to watch the water and maybe catch a glimpse of a duck while you are dining. The menu concentrates on beef—the thick and juicy cognac pepper Angus steak is mouthwatering. You also have choices of wonderful dishes like the plump grilled chicken breast and the grilled chicken pasta salad. The wine list here is well rounded, a perfect compliment to your meal.

Scampi's looks like a little sidewalk café on the outside, with a couple of white iron tables and chairs gracing the entrance. A black-and-white checkered tablecloth and cloth napkins flesh out the special, romantic ambiance as Italian music plays in the background. A group of 8-10 entrees are available for lunch, along with about twice as many at dinner. The house specialty, spaghetti, is served both by itself and as a side dish with the lasagna, the cannelloni, the linguine or one of the many other entrees. If you have room, try one of the heavenly desserts such as tiramisu or creamy custard. Finally, you may bring your own bottle of wine.
