Theatre for children and adults |
Pfingstweidstraße 2 Ostend Frankfurt, HES 60316 Germany +49 69 49 1725 http://www.katakombe-frankfurt... |
The Katakombe theatre is well known for its magical children's performances, as well as for its quality evening shows for adults. Children's performances take place at the weekend and are fast and furious, with only a few actors handling the whole scene. The evening plays are often contemporary works, although classic plays by the likes of Goethe are occasionally scheduled. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This comedy venue near Willy-Brandt-Platz has made a name for itself as a great place for comedy. The cast often features prominent guests from the world of television, and the productions are guaranteed to get you laughing. The worst theatre in the world |
Seckbächer Gasse 2 Frankfurt, HES 60311 Germany +49 69 28 1066 http://www.die-schmiere.de/ |
The worst theater in the world is how the Schmiere proudly describes itself. Instead of comfortable seats, the audience have to sit down on old armchairs and worn-out sofas. But the intelligent comedy shows and cabaret, directed by author and director Klaus Tessnow, make you forget the uncomfortable seats immediately. The novel program includes pieces with titles such as Bow and Fall Over - all of which come with a healthy shot of sarcastic humor. Free entry is given to anyone who brings their own chair. The only condition is that you leave it there afterwards! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live Bands Every Night |
Färberstraße 71 Sachsenhausen Frankfurt, HES 60594 Germany +49 069 6612 9804 / +49 0151 1061 5044 http://www.dreikoenigskeller.com/ |
Are you a creature of the night? A music fan? If so, then read on! The Dreikönigskeller is a wonderfully dark 'music cellar' that pumps out the sounds all week long. Monday is modern jazz night, while Tuesday night's popular 'Club Exotica' ranges from rockabilly to Trash. The programme from Wednesday through Sunday is just as varied, with everything from funk to country western. Ravers can groove until the early hours every night of the week, and amateur musicians can try out their own music at the wild jam sessions. Be sure to check the website for updated schedules of performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

West End musicals and comedies |
Kaiserstraße 34 Frankfurt, HES 60329 Germany +49 69 2423 1610 http://www.english-theatre.org |
Founded by American actress Judith Rosenbauer some 20 years ago, the English Theatre Frankfurt is located in the heart of Frankfurt's red light district. The charismatic old house, which used to be home to porno movies and peep shows, now features Broadway and West End shows, musicals and comedies. As there aren't many English language theaters in the region, the theater is popular with school classes who come to improve their English. Visitors can relax in the bistro before or after performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Magical cabaret |
Vilbeler Straße Frankfurt, HES 60313 Germany |
Frankfurt's new attraction, Fellini, is located in the heart of the city in the Konstabler Arcaden shopping centre next to the Arabella Grand Hotel. It hosts top class cabaret and burlesque performances in a stylish 1920s art deco setting. Visitors can enjoy the shows over a fine selection of drinks and small, exquisitely prepared dishes. There are performances by artistes from all over the world, including internationally renowned burlesque artistes and magicians. The enormous selection of cocktails is particularly worthy of mention. And after the shows are over, you can continue to enjoy the evening over drinks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Offenbach and Berg |
Untermainanlage 11 Frankfurt, HES 60311 Germany +49 69 2 1202 http://www.oper-frankfurt.de |
Opera is a burning issue in Frankfurt in more ways than one. Outsiders tend to associate it with the Alte Oper or the Opernbühne, but both were completely destroyed in the Second World War. A new building was opened in 1951 but burned to the ground in 1987, being reopened some four years later. The stucco sculpting on the ceiling of the foyer is of particular architectural interest. Reminscent of cloud formations, it is visible from the outside through a large window. The works of the six operatic stalwarts are staged here more than anything else, though they also alternate with more recent composers. Instead of a permanent programme, the Oper Frankfurt currently employs a 'staggione' system, staging performances in groups. The reputation of the opera house used to be a cut above the rest, but is currently on the wane as a result of internal disputes, despite some spectacular productions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small and unobtrusive, the Kellertheater in Frankfurt city centre offers an interesting range of productions ranging from classical theatre by Goethe or Shakespeare, to newer pieces by Eissler or Brecht, as well as contemporary improvisation and interactive theatre. The Kommunale Galerie (Communal Gallery) was founded in 1974 and is housed in the Leinwandhaus, an atmospheric 14th century building. The gallery is used by local artists as a forum where they can promote and display their work. Numerous one-off exhibitions organised, many of which feature little-known, contemporary artists. As well as sculptures and graphics, the displays include photography and design. The lectures and talks given by artists are also extremely popular. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Clubland chameloen |
Kurt-Schumacher-Straße 45 City Frankfurt, HES 60313 Germany +49 69 2 0650 |
This establishment on Konstablerwache lives a chameleon-like existence. An ordinary café by day, Nachtleben transforms into a concert hall-cum-club at night, hosting gigs by newcomers (including heavy metal, rock, grunge and punk bands) as well as regular club nights. The whole place becomes a 'Sinister Zone' on Fridays with wave and gothic played by DJ Katharina; Saturdays feature techno, house and soul. The promoters, who also run Batschapp, are constantly coming up with new ideas, with regular theme nights and novelty acts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Concert and conference centre |
Opernplatz 1 City Frankfurt, HES 60313 Germany +49 69 134 0219 http://www.alteoper.de |
The Old Opera House still looks as magnificent and imposing as it did when it was opened by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1880. The building was financed by wealthy Frankfurt citizens and was designed in Italian Renaissance style by Richard Lucae. Destroyed in a 1944 air raid, it was rebuilt in 1964-81 and renamed the 'Old Opera Concert and Conference Centre'. The main auditorium, with seating for about 2,500 people, is the central part of the building and is used for concerts, conferences and other events. Smaller rooms can be hired for functions. Visitors can obtain refreshments in the café, the restaurant or the bistro. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seventies cinema |
Schäfergasse 10 Frankfurt, HES 60313 Germany +49 69 28 9520 |
With 722 seats and a 160m-long screen, the Royal is one of the largest cinemas in town. The interior, decorated entirely in red, dates from the seventies. While the large multi-screen complexes on the outskirts of town now attract more visitors, people are still drawn here by the nostalgic atmosphere. Even though the interior looks slightly worn, the technology is state of the art, and can easily hold its own against other, more modern cinemas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern-day classics |
Neue Mainzer Straße 17 Frankfurt, HES 60311 Germany +49 69 2124 5263 http://www.schauspielfrankfurt.de |
Opened in 1963 and with a capacity of 700, the Schauspielhaus has, unfortunately, lost some of its initial glamour (when it became the first West German theatre to feature plays by Bertolt Brecht). While its productions of modern-day classics by the likes of Thomas Bernhard, Hans Schwab and Karl Kraus are still decent, it is now better known for its political intrigues than its intriguing productions. This place has been around since 1971 and has seen off the coolest and hippest clubs over the years. Frankfurt's movers and shakers still head to this trendy and stylish venue. Check out the website or the programme guide for details of current concerts. On Thursdays and Saturdays there are retro discos under the banner 'Shake It Up - The Eighties Fun Disco' or 'Back to the Sixties and Seventies'. Artistic and culinary finesse |
Heiligkreuzgasse 16-20 Frankfurt, HES 60313 Germany +49 69 9200 2250 http://www.tigerpalast.com |
Artistic and culinary finesse combine to make the Tigerpalast one of the best addresses in town. Martin Göschel and his team toil away in the kitchen of the dome-roofed restaurant, while visitors admire the fine contemporary art on the first floor. Dishes such as Glazed Fillet of Turbot on Potato and Truffle Mousse recently earned the restaurant a highly-prized Michelin star and 17 Gault Millau points. Johnny Klinke, former student protestor and owner of the restaurant, has come to understand that the best revolutions are culinary rather than political. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Performances in original dialect |
Großer Hirschgraben 21 Frankfurt, HES 60311 Germany +49 69 28 3676 http://www.volkstheater-frankf... |
Be it a foreign classic or a local favorite, all plays here are performed in the local dialect. The Volkstheater was founded by the well-known Frankfurt actress, Liesel Christ, more than a quarter of a century ago. All shows are performed completely in dialect, which is not only used for Goethe's Faust, but also for works by Shakespeare or contemporary pieces by Berthold Brecht. The theater group has been so successful that they appear in guest productions throughout the region. The open-air performances in the summer are especially popular. Review © 2007, Wcities |
