"Commercial hospitality" is a long-standing tradition in Frankfurt. Hordes of travellers have been descending on the town ever since the conferment of trading rights in 1240. At the end of the 18th century, visitors could choose from over 70 guest houses. Nowadays, over 160 hotels, guest houses and hostels with 22,000 beds cater to 2.5 million visitors annually. Over half of all visitors come from abroad. With an average stay of just under two days, Frankfurt is still a place for people in transit rather than for long-term visitors. The choice ranges from small, family-run guest houses to huge establishments offering every imaginable luxury. But most places don't come cheap - nightly rates of EUR 120 for a single room and EUR 150 for a double are the rule and not the exception.

Traveller Convenience

If you arrive in Frankfurt by air, then you can book into one of the airport hotels at the drop of a hat. With more than 1,000 rooms, the Sheraton is the biggest hotel in the region. The Steigenberger Airport Hotel offers weary travellers a similarly high standard, while the Kempinski - which is located on the edge of the city forest - is a particularly good alternative for travellers looking for a breath of fresh air after a long flight.

The choice of hotels in the Bahnhofsviertel (around the main station) ranges from dingy dives to top-class establishments. As a high price doesn't necessarily mean high quality in this neck of the woods, it is best to inform yourself in advance. Popular choices for both tourists and business people are the Carlton, Manhattan, and Intercity hotels. The Nizza and Victoria are charming Nineteenth century establishments, and would make a good choice if you're not put off at the thought of staying close to Frankfurt's red light district.

Luxury Hotels

Luxury hotels include the Le Meridien Parkhotel, an elegant art nouveau palace close to the main station, plus several others in the City Centre: the Steinberger Frankfurter Hof, a splendid nineteenth century Renaissance establishment, is situated close to the Zeil shopping street, as too are the Intercontinental and the Arabella Grand Hotel. The Hilton is one of the best hotels around.

Business Class

Visitors to exhibitions and trade fairs such as the International Motor Show or the Frankfurt Book Fair have a decent choice of places to stay. The circular, glass-fronted Maritim (next to the Festhalle) can hardly be overseen, while over on the other side of the street, the Marriott is one of the tallest hotel buildings in Europe. One of Frankfurt's most renowned and respected addresses is the Hessischer Hof opposite the Exhibition Centre. The nearby Astoria Hotel doesn't quite offer the same level of comfort, but it wins people over with its low-key atmosphere.

Westend

Not far from the Exhibition Centre, the district of Westend is another place with a good choice of quality accommodation. The Palmenhof and small, quaint hotels such as the Hotel Florentina, Backer, Liebig, and Westend are particularly recommended. There are also some charming guest houses here, like Hotel Gölz and Pension Sattler.

City Centre

If you'd prefer to stay in the City Centre, then the Hotel Zentrum Hauptwache and the Hotel am Dom are both good bets. Certain establishments in the suburbs are also worthy of mention: Hotel Maingau in Sachsenhausen, Best Western Alexander am Zoo in Bornheim and Mondial in Nordend to name but a few.

Alternative Accommodations

Frankfurt also boasts quite a range of alternative accommodation. The Mozart near the Alte Oper, for example, is decorated entirely in pink and white. The rooms in the Art Hotel Robert Mayer have been designed by some of Frankfurt's best-known interior designers, and guests in the Hotel Gerbermühle can look out of the window onto the River Main and the garden in which Goethe spent much of his free time.

Bahnhofsviertel

Frankfurt
Germany
In the 1920s, more than 20,000 people lived in the ornate houses close to the main station, the Hauptbahnhof. Today the Bahnhofsviertel (station quarter) is home to just 4,000 residents. The descent of the neighbourhood into a dubious red light district began in the seventies and a multitude of sex shops, gambling dens, brothels and strip bars now dominate the landscape here. Yet places like the English Theatre and the chamber choir, as well as numerous bars and restaurants means that business people still flock here after finishing work in the nearby banking quarter.

Bornheim

Frankfurt
Germany
The "merry village" of Bornheim spans the divide between the traditional and the trendy. The old-world cider pubs, spanking-new bars, exclusive boutiques and simple corner shops attract a mixed clientele. At the heart of this residential area is Berger Straße, a great place for a bit of shopping. You'll find entertainment a plenty in the Mousonturm and in the Berger Cinema. If you are in need of relaxation, why not try the Chinese Garden or the Ice Rink for a spot of energetic relaxation. The Dippemess Festival, which takes place twice a year, is also a good bet for entertainment.

Westend

Frankfurt
Germany
Westend is situated in the shadows of the skyscrapers and high-rises which are home to the city's banks and financial companies. In the seventies, the district was full of students and squatters demonstrating against the destruction of the area's old buildings. Today, offices and banks lend the area its character, and owners of the luxury flats and penthouse suites meet up to jog in Grüneburg park or relax in the Palm Garden. The recently restored Synagogue, the monumental IG-Farbenhaus and the Alte Oper are all well worth a visit.
