As far as eating and drinking are concerned, Frankfurt has it all. Here you'll be able to find something to suit every taste, and across all price ranges. Yet going out for a meal or a drink is not just about satisfying appetites. Frankfurt is a city full of single people, and socialising is high on the agenda at many localities.

Frankfurt's gastronomic scene has certainly profited from the airport, which links the city to food producers from all over the world. The city's foreign communities have also added a touch of spice to the culinary landscape, which is now full of Turkish, Indian, Japanese and other foreign establishments. Yet those on the look out for local cooking are also well catered for by numerous restaurants and snack bars which serve up regional specialities at reasonable prices.

But the absolute highlight for visitors to Frankfurt is definitely an evening in one of the Ebbelwohnkneipen, traditional cider pubs which serve up ceramic mugs full of the local drink, Apfelwein. Be it sweet or dry, cider is the drink of choice in Frankfurt and is best appreciated with an accompaniment of Handkäse, a type of hard cheese mixed with onions, vinegar and oil.

Local Cuisine

Frankfurt has a good choice of places specialising in regional food and drink. The best and most popular cider pubs are to be found in the district of Sachsenhausen. The Affentorschänke, for example, with its rustic interior and good value menu, offers Haspeln and Schäufelchen (both local pork dishes), as well as a stunning fillet of beef, served with, you guessed it, cider! The Wagner is also popular, not just because of its food and drink, but also because of its easy-going and extremely sociable atmosphere. The only problem with the cider pubs in Sachsenhausen is that they are fairly touristy and can get very full. Other districts have pubs that are just as good, but which are visited predominantly by locals. Fine examples include the Zur Schönen Müllerin in Nordend or Friedberger Warte in Bornheim.

Exotic Cuisine

If you like foreign food, then you'll love Frankfurt. The area around the city's main shopping street, the Zeil, is full of foreign restaurants: be it Greek (Omonia), Italian (Isoletta), French (Bistro Rosa), Japanese (Utage), or Thai (Suvadee), you'll be spoilt for choice here.

Frankfurt is Germany's most multi-cultural city, and you'll find that most places don't water things down to cater to European tastes. Original spices are used, and if you order a curry which claims to be hot, you can bet it'll blow you away! Particularly worthy of mention are the Lahore Palace, an excellent Indian restaurant with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and Phuket, a fantastic Thai snack bar with great dishes at knock-down prices.

Good Value Meals

In a city full of bankers, financial advisers, lawyers and accountants, it can be somewhat difficult to eat cheap here. But there are certain places where you can wine and dine without breaking the bank. Popular examples include the Indian Curry House close to the main station, La Habana and Manolya in Nordend and China Haus Chui in the City Centre. If you like German cuisine, try Niddastübchen or Max und Moritz at the station, Zum Jodler in Sachsenhausen and Windows 25 in the City Centre. The Marché-Mövenpick in the Zeilgalerie also offers a wide choice of good-value dishes.

Fast food

You'll have no problem finding a quick snack in Frankfurt. Due to the high proportion of office workers and professionals ("time is money"), there are plenty of kebab houses, pizza places, sushi and sandwich bars scattered around the City Centre. Good bets include Sushi am Main, the Persian snack-bar Rendezvous, and the Maggi-Kochstudio. Fans of gourmet cuisine should head for the delicatessens near the Frankfurter Hof on Kaiserstraße, or to Freßgass near the Opera House, Frankfurt's mecca for gourmets.

Cafés

Frankfurt boasts hundreds of cafés and coffee houses, many of which cater to a particular clientele or offer a particular speciality. Although the choice is large, certain places do stand out.

Café Karin near Goethe's House is a top-pick from Frankfurt's traditional cafés. The café in the Hauptwache, which dates from 1728, is also a good, traditional address. Otherwise, head for Café Laumer (with a garden and summer terrace) in Westend.

Near the university, Café Abraham is popular with students. If you prefer things a bit more unconventional, pop into Café im Liebighaus, where you can admire modern art and sculptures with your coffee. Politically correct coffee lovers should head for the World Coffee Shop near the Stock Exchange, while computer freaks can enjoy a snack while surfing the net in the Internet Café Netroom.

Bornheim

Frankfurt
Germany
The "merry village" of Bornheim spans the divide between the traditional and the trendy. The old-world cider pubs, spanking-new bars, exclusive boutiques and simple corner shops attract a mixed clientele. At the heart of this residential area is Berger Straße, a great place for a bit of shopping. You'll find entertainment a plenty in the Mousonturm and in the Berger Cinema. If you are in need of relaxation, why not try the Chinese Garden or the Ice Rink for a spot of energetic relaxation. The Dippemess Festival, which takes place twice a year, is also a good bet for entertainment.

Café Karin

Classic breakfast location
Großer Hirschgraben 23-25
Frankfurt, HES 60311
Germany
+49 69 29 5217
http://www.cafekarin.de
Café Karin is a city-centre oasis located directly opposite Goethe's birthplace at Großer Hirschgraben. Its student charm is tempered by a hint of urban coolness and the breakfasts are legendary, for a croissant with butter and jam. At lunchtime, light meals are served. In the summer customers compete for an outdoor table so that they can watch the comings and goings on the streets outside. The decor is pleasantly worn, with practicality taking precedence over beauty. The relaxed and unfussy ambience attracts young people and families for whom the café has become a home away from home.

Friedberger Watchtower

Historic watchtower
Friedberger Landstraße 360
Frankfurt, HES 60389
Germany
Friedberg watchtower was erected in 1478 as a protection and observation point for the new settlements in the northern part of the town. From here, the watchman could see the surrounding area and, if necessary, give a warning signal to the town by flag or torch. In 1634 the tower was destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt just a few years later. It managed to survive the Second World War without any major damage and is now home to a traditional pub, famous for its apple wine.

Gourmet Street

Gourmet paradise
Große Bockenheimer Straße
Frankfurt, HES 60313
Germany
+49 69 2123 8800 (tourism office)
Locals refer to the stretch of Große Bockenheimer Straße between Opernplatz and Börsenstraße as 'Fressgass', meaning 'eat street'. Fressgass' is unique: in no other German town will you find such a density of delicatessens and quality food stores, each selling their own gourmet meats, cheeses, pasta and cakes. Bankers, opera fanatics and tourists flock here to sample the delights on offer, which can either be wrapped up to take home or eaten immediately at one of the bistro tables which line the street. Over the course of time, several cheaper fast-food places have also opened up along Fressgass'. Several festivities take place here every year, including the Frankfurt Wine Festival, the Fressgass' Festival and the Christmas Market.

Hauptwache Police Station

Well-known landmark and restaurant
An der Hauptwache 11
Frankfurt, HES 60313
Germany

The former police station is one of Frankfurt's best-known landmarks. In the 18th century, the square-shaped, Baroque building with its columned arcades was built as a police station and prison, when it housed many famous but reluctant guests (such as the councilor Johannes Erasmus Senckenberg and the legendary robber Schinderhannes). In April 1833, a crowd of intellectuals occupied the building and freed the inmates as a signal for the introduction of a republic. The conspiracy was soon quashed. In 1904, the building fell into disuse and in the 1970s it was demolished to make room for the construction of the underground railway, but was later rebuilt. Café Hauptwache now attracts guests with hearty meals and desserts, and with outdoor seating in the summer.

If you don't know Maggi soup, this is your chance to make your acquaintance. The Swiss food producer has now blessed Frankfurt with a 'cookery club', where visitors can watch professional chefs at work and take part in cookery courses. The soup bar has developed into a popular place for a quick snack, which can be put down to the fine quality and reasonable prices. The selection is small, although it changes every two weeks. The whole range of Maggi products is available at a small boutique at the front of the shop.

Manolya

Modern Turkish cuisine
Habsburger Allee 6
Frankfurt, HES 60385
Germany
+49 69 494 0162
Manolya is a friendly, pleasantly decorated Turkish restaurant which can get quite crowded at peak times, which is no surprise bearing in mind that the plates are heaped high and the prices are low. The spicy Turkish specialities are a real eye-opener for those only acquainted with doner kebabs. The vegetarian and lamb dishes are particularly good, and a cup of Turkish coffee is the perfect way to round off the meal.

Nordend

Frankfurt
Germany
The most densely populated and popular residential area of Frankfurt, Nordend boasts attractive streets and quaint 19th century houses, as well as numerous pubs and small shops. The area used to be dominated by the left-wing alternative scene but is now home to a community of wealthy bankers who live here alongside the student population. People meet up in one of the many Italian, Greek or Turkish restaurants in the area, or in bars such as Harveys or Kasimir.

This wonderful restaurant in the elegant Westend district of Frankfurt is an all time favorite of a demanding clientèle for almost three decades, and going strong. Regrettably neither their website functions nor do they seem to answer mails. More info may be found on local guide www.selected-restaurants.com who also handle email reservation requests on their behalf. And, a reservation you will need - the place can get really full - and a written confirmation is always advisable...

Rosa Bistro

Pig out in French style
Grüneburgweg 25
Frankfurt, HES 60322
Germany

Pigs are the decorative theme of this small French restaurant. Their image covers the restaurant, including the walls. The tables are lovingly set and the well-heeled guests like dining in such original and intimate surroundings. The menu, which is also adorned with images of pink pigs, consists of French-inspired dishes created by Paul Baucuse from Lyon and also incorporates meat dishes from Burgundy. Don't worry if you don't like pork; it's not the only thing on the menu.

Suvadee Thai Restaurant

Thai pioneer
Baumweg 19
Frankfurt, HES 60316
Germany
+49 69 494 0764
One of the first Thai restaurants in Frankfurt, Suvadee's interior is warm, with wall-carvings and other traditional Thai decor. The staff is friendly and more than willing to help you choose a dish. The choice is vast and includes authentic fish, chicken, meat and vegetable dishes, some of which are very spicy. The prices are not the cheapest, but you'll hear no complaints about the quality. Another branch is located at Steinweg 7 in the city.

Westend

Frankfurt
Germany
Westend is situated in the shadows of the skyscrapers and high-rises which are home to the city's banks and financial companies. In the seventies, the district was full of students and squatters demonstrating against the destruction of the area's old buildings. Today, offices and banks lend the area its character, and owners of the luxury flats and penthouse suites meet up to jog in Grüneburg park or relax in the Palm Garden. The recently restored Synagogue, the monumental IG-Farbenhaus and the Alte Oper are all well worth a visit.

"World Coffee" is a name that is recognised all over the world. This small Frankfurt branch, located very close to the Stock Exchange, is a great place for a quick coffee. The firm's philosophy of fair play and political correctness leave you safe in the knowledge that no one has had to suffer so that you can sip on your capuccino. Snacks are available, as too is a small assortment of CDs from developing countries.
