Dried and candied fruits and rarities from all over the world.
Via Sottoripa, 105r
Genoa 16123

This shop is far from just a fruit shop. Fruit is just the start. It holds a whole series of delicious products like candied fruits, dried fruits and sweets. There are specialties which have been imported from distant countries like dates (for which there is a good range of qualities and some rare types for the connoisseurs among us). The shop undergoes a barrage around Christmas time and is used throughout the year.

You can find this old barber's shop along the sea front in Via Canneto off the Vico Caprettari. It dates back to 1922 and is perfectly furnished in Art Decco style, making it well-worth a visit. The tiny premises are barely 10 m.sq. They have recently been bought by FAI who have skillfully restored the building, refitting the windows, mirrors and floral decoration. Now back to its old splendor, FAI have reopened it as a barber's shop.

Natural clothes
Via Macelli di Soziglia, 16r
Genoa 16123
Italy
This new shop for natural and biological clothing is really cool. "Natural" means that the garment has not undergone any chemical treatment in its production or in the dyeing or fixing processes. The items on display have been designed and manufactured in Italy. As well as being ethically correct, the clothes, skirts, trousers and blouses are very beautiful. They have raw colours, soft material and smooth lines. The children's clothes are wonderful as is the very original naturally-made costume jewellery.

Royal sweeties
Via Soziglia, 74-76 r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 247 4574
This name is synonomous with high-quality sweets. They have been made carefully using methods handed down from father to son. The composer Guiseppe Verdi would never miss the chance to buy sweets and candied fruit from "Romanengo" when he stayed in Genova. The shop is in the old city down a narrow lane off the Piazza Soziglia. This is the main shopping area of Genova. Since 1780, the patisserie has made delicious sweets, chocolates, fondants, syrups, rosolio (a kind of syrup) and jams. These delicacies have been enjoyed far outside Genova. (They supplied the Royal family in England.) It is worth visiting to see the original decor with the beautiful marble walls outside and the elegant "boisieres" inside.

Panarello

Traditional Genovese bar
Via Galata, 67
Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 10 56 1027
Panarello cake is a must for any Genoese child's birthday. It also comes in a mini version for anyone watching their weight. The biscuits, sold by weight, must also be sampled, including the house specialities; 'Lagaccio' and 'Mescolanza'. There is nowhere to sit here and the bar is always crowded, but it is worth trying any of their biscuits or cakes with a cup of tea or a cappucino.

Panificio Patrone

Genovese Focaccia at the break of dawn
Via Ravecca, 72r
Genoa 16123
Italy
This is a must for anyone who's walking around Genova late at night. The Patrone's oven is turning out focaccia, pizza and croissant at the break of dawn. Located at the end of a narrow lane, it's only a stone's throw from the Expo and the old city centre. The bakery satisfies the most famished appetite. Their onion focaccia bread is a real oasis in the Genoese night. So see you at dawn then!

Pasticceria Villa

Patisserie on Via Garibaldi
Via Portello, 2r
Genoa 16124
Italy
+39 10 277 0002
This super patisserie has a beautiful period setting. It is at the ground floor corner of one of the sixteenth century buildings on Via Garibaldi. They sell bombonieres, pastries and cakes, all of which continue the Renaissance beauty of the surroundings. There are always all sorts of sweets and patisseries available. It's a good idea to order cakes. We recommend the flaky pastry jam tart with pastry cream and fruit. It seems like it has jumped out of a painting of Van Dyck just thanks to the way it looks. Don't even ask about the taste!

Ancient, hidden chocolaterie
Vicolo dei Castagna, 14r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 20 8561
A traditional chocolaterie which is still run as it once was. If the quantity required is more than a Sunday chocolate box, it is worth ordering. It is impossible to find, tucked away in a little sidestreet, although near Piazza Matteotti. Managing to locate the entrance in order to sample one of these chocolates is like a treasure hunt. The shop closes early in the evening, and orders take a while to process. However, if you are lucky enough to dissolve a fondant cream in your mouth or crunch on a chocolate covered nut, you will be willing to begin the hunt all over again. Despite these minor hitches, you'll find that the staff are friendly and polite.

This shop was recently opened by three young entrepreneurs, and is now known locally as 'the three guys' shop'. There is not an enormous range of stock, but the quality albums are much sought after, and even for the most sophisticated it would be difficult not to find something interesting. There is a good selection of LPs, 7' singles, punk cds, ska, emo, indie, noise, and heavy metal. Those who still remain unimpressed will be pleased with the selection of T-shirts and merchandise featuring their favorite bands. They buy second-hand records and cds. This shop deserves support.

Zuccotti

A hidden chocolaterie worth finding
Via Santa Zita, 36r
Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 10 58 0504
Zuccotti's philosophy is this: the chocolate must be of very high quality, as well as the iced chestnuts and sweets. This is what counts. The decor of the shop in which these delights are sold does not need to be classy and elegant. So it isn't. In the peak seasons (Easter and Christmas) queues stretch onto the pavement. Customers wait patiently to enter an empty, run down shopfront, while all the real activity is in the kitchens behind. The wait is long, but the end product is worth the wait.
