Genoa is a beautiful city that can also be an immense amount of fun. Far from the trendy, overwhelming, Milan scene and different from the atmosphere of Rome, Genoa offers its visitors a more underground scene where they have to make an effort to enter into the fun. The heart of this understated city's nightlife can be found in the historic centre, where the underground culture can be discovered in the alleyways surrounding historic palaces and monuments. It is not always easy to find what you are looking for, but this is all part of the game, and the style of the city.

Most of the nighttime haunts are concentrated in area between Piazza Sarzana and Via San Lorenzo. During the day it is nice to wander around the backstreets here in search of some of the more hidden places in the city. There are some sophisticated wine bars to be discovered here such as Le Cantine Squarciafico, or tapas bars that are open until late, such as La Lepre. The scene changes on the weekends, when the usually peaceful alleyways are taken over by lively crowds on their way to Cafè Latino in piazza Delle Erbe, Le Corbousier in piazza San Donato and the Moretti inn in Via San Bernardo. These places are always packed and the neighbouring areas are full of cocktail and wine bars. This is a veritable epicentre of nightlife, where you can barhop all night or go on to one of the clubs in the area such as Dueseiuno or Lukrezia, or even go along to a disco which are usually full on Saturday nights, like DLF, Eccentrica, and Coccodrillo. Before going to bed, satisfy those late night hunger pangs with a warm focaccia from the bakery in Corso Sardegna, Briciole. Out of the centre, it is possible to spend the night on the Riviera. However, it is best to do this on the weekends in the winter, and any night in the summer. What could be more inviting than the prospect of sipping a cocktail on a veranda overlooking the sea, at a bar such as Monumento, or even directly on the beach at Sori, at Sillo? There are great fish restaurants at Camogli and Sabot, in Santa Margherita, is a great place to have an after dinner drink, or go to Covo di Nord Est or Carillon, to sample the local night life. After a tiring evening, when the dawn is breaking in Portofino, go to Alba for some hot foccacia which can be eaten by the boats in the port.

Cinema

Genoan cinema was revolutionised a few years ago when the multiscreen Cineplex was opened. It has nine screens, seats 3,000 and offers advanced technology, comfortable seats and free parking. The building is in the Magazzini del Cotone, in the old, port area and the largest two rooms were designed by Renzo Piano. They show commercial films but some quality works are assured by the Istituto Luce which is a partner in this enterprise. The Genoa Film Festival will take place here in June, a national competition for short films.

In the city centre, the Universale has three screens which are comfortable with large screens and Dolby surround sound. It offers commercial, quality films. For something slightly different, go to Il Corallo, which has two screens and more adventurous programmes or the Ariston, that altenates interesting films with films in their original language. The Lumiere is a must for cinephiles who meet here for exhibitions, previews and film festivals.

Theatre

The Carlo Felice Theatre offers a varied programme of opera as well as jazz and rock concerts. Even though it has not been running for many years, the former theatre was bombed in the war, it has made its mark on the national scene. The building was renovated in a post-modern style and has a capacity of 2,000. As for prose theatre, the most classic offerings can be found in the Teatro della Corte, which is famous for its school that has produced many well known actors. It is also in a modern, well designed building.

Two large halls have diversified theatre in Genoa in the last few years. The Duse and Genovese halls offer a programme of successful musicals and comedians who do television work. As for alternative theatre, two places in Genoa offer an interesting choice. The Teatro della Tosse, is now a favourite place for two great artists; the comedy writer Tonino Conte and the set designer Lele Luzzati. It produces its own shows and, in the summer, organises surprising events in old factories and abandoned forts. There is also the Modena, a nineteenth century theatre that was restored a few years ago. It offers various, interesting and fun productions, from Brazilian music and culture festivals to collaborations with Stefano Benni and Daniel Pennac, lessons by Baricco and acrobatic dance performances.

Music

The Carlo Felice Theatre is the place to go to hear opera and classical music concerts as well as high quality jazz. There are also various places in Genoa that offer live music. The recently opened DLF, offers an intense, ambitious programme which is open to international music trends with a strong emphasis on sounds from the London club scene. It has a capacity for 1,300 people and is one of the best places to hear live music in the city. The programme is developed by the same people who organise the only popular music festival in the region. It is called Goa-Boa and takes place every July.

The smaller club circuit centers around the historic district. Quaalude was the first place in Genoa to open the way for underground music. Fitzcarraldo hosts sought after artists, even if the small location is not great for larger crowds, and Mascherona and the Palace offer a chance to hear live music as well, usually punk or rock. La Cittadella offers alternative music evenings, ranging from flamenco to celtic music and the Lousiana Jazz Club alternates jam sessions by local artists with concerts by famous, international musicians.

Cafe' Latino

In the heart of the centre

Together with the Bar Berto, this place is the heart of the Piazza delle Erbe. It is open for lunch offering salads and sandwiches, and reopens in the evening at 6pm for aperitifs until 2am. On Friday evenings, the piazza is literally invaded by pedestrians taking a stroll. The bar offers cocktails and beer as well as sandwiches until late at night. There tends to be a young crowd, and this is an excellent place to find out what is happening all over the city. The next door tobacconists is open until late.

Carillon

A trendy hangout
Via Paraggi a mare, 10
Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 18 528 6721
This place is about half an hour by car from Genoa, between Santa Margherita and Portofino, in the Paraggi bay, which is famous for its white sand and green water. This is the place to go to on the riviera, and is popular on Friday and Saturday nights in summer and winter. It is a beautiful club, with a veranda overlooking the sea, low ceilings and wooden structure. It is a restaurant for the first half of the evening, and towards midnight it becomes a disco. Entrance is reserved for those who have booked a table, those who personally know the staff on the door and anyone important looking! Ultra snobby atmosphere but also a fun place.

Coccodrillo

Commercial music and rock in this lively disco
Via Carzino, 13r Sampierdarena
Genoa 16100
Italy
This disco is extremely popular with Genoan students although it is slightly out of the centre. In the Sampierdarena district, it has attracted a crowd of youth for years, especially on Saturdays, who dance to mostly commercial music and old and new rock. This is not a big place, and it has two floors. The upper floor has a balcony which is usually packed and the dance floor, dominated by the DJ, is downstairs.

DLF

Trendy music in a beautiful setting
Via Degola, 9
Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 10 59 3650
This old cinema has been renovated and is now a concert venue and a disco. The loft like structure has high ceilings and a large stage and dancefloor with an elevated floor and gangways looking onto the dancefloor. The place is dominated by the electric blue walls, bright red, velvet sofas and a bronze bar. The hi-tech glass and steel staircase that leads to the upper floor is particularly distinctive and gives the place an avant-garde look. With high quality music, foreign DJ's from all over Europe come here to play the most up to date sounds, including break beat, new jazz beat, drum and bass and asia underground. This is a trendy place with a metropolitan style that is unique in Genoa.

Fitzcarraldo

Club, cabaret and live music
Piazza Cavour, 35r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 246 1129
The pub is divided into three parts. The main room contains tables and benches. From here you can reach the 'disco' area at the back and then there is a superelevated floor with more tables laid out, but where there are also occasional exhibitions of young artists. The walls are adorned with sculptures made out of mechanical items such as wheels, bolts and gears, all formed into enormous robots and functioning machines that have no function (there is a beautiful englobed structure on one of the benches). Concerts are organised in the disco room but the standing room available for spectators is very limited and the view of performers is non-existent. The cabaret evenings allow a better view of the stage as they are less busy, and tables are available.

La Lepre

The latest in the panorama of old town pubs
Piazza della Lepre, 5r
Old Town
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 251 7693
In a less frequented area of the old town, away from the piazza Sarzano but not far from the via Garibaldi we find this recently opened pub: pretty, airy and quiet. High-ceilinged rooms, light green walls, a wide bar. First impressions are of coldness. In actual fact the atmosphere is simple and moderate, in a welcoming way. The choice of beer and wines is accompanied by snacks and tapas. The bar is great for aperitifs but also for quick snacks before and after the cinema. The atmosphere is very quiet, with the area subdivided into three rooms to avoid smoke stagnation, which is a big problem in old town bars and too much noise, with music and general chatter being kept at a more moderate level.

Le Cantine Squarciafico

Wine bar in a historic palazzo
Piazza Invrea, 3r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 247 0823
This wine bar is located in a historic palace, with many medieval arches and elegant, stylish renovations. The walls are red and orange, there are stone columns and commissioned lamps emitting soft lighting; all in all a warm, rustic atmosphere. This is one of the most chic bars in the 'alternative' side of Genoa. If you want a speedy and convenient stop for a snack, it's fairly close to the Piazza del Duomo.

Le Corbousier

Trendy pub at any time of day or night
Via San Donato, 36/38r
Old Town
Genoa, Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 246 8652
The pub where every night you can find guest artists, theater actors and other undercover stars enjoying a night out. Strategically placed, near to the Palazzo Ducale, architectural Faculty in the heart of the old town the pub always fills up at around 7pm at the weekends and by 11 getting a drink is a real 'mission impossible'. Artists' exhibitions are displayed on the walls, there are three rooms with tables, two benches and plenty of windows looking out onto the street so you can watch the world go by. Mostly soul and funk, the atmosphere is very smoky. Generous dishes to accompany the drinks. Definitely Genoa's most trendy bar, there's no need for an appointment, just get yourself down there.

Mascherona

Underground club in the historic centre
Via Salita Mascherona, 16r
Genoa 16100
Italy
In an area full of bars, in the historic centre, this is one of a variety of clubs where you can go for an after dinner drink, listen to live music, and enjoy improvised jamming sessions by Genovese musicians. They also offer cabaret evenings and are great places to go with friends. In an old building, it looks out onto the Mascherona exit and is slightly hidden away from the main road. Nonetheless, it can be easily reached by the more lively San Bernardo alleyway. Open until late, this is an ideal end to an evening of bar hopping on a Friday or Saturday night.

Palace

Out of the centre
Via Simone Schiaffino, 32
Genoa 16148
Italy
+39 10 376 1664
This is a dancehall with a small stage where concerts sometimes take place. Interestingly decorated, it is one large room with a marble balcony. There is a retro, end of the nineteenth century atmosphere and it attracts a young crowd, particularly on 'rock' evenings. It has also lately been offering evenings devoted to Latino music, with lessons by professional dancers. Far from the centre and difficult to reach without precise directions.

Quaalude

Live music and Dj's
Piazza Sarzano
Genoa 16123
Italy
This is a historic place in Genoese clubbing history, as it was the first place in the city to offer live music on the underground circuit (at the beginning of the 1980's). Once small and packed, it is now more airy after being renovated and extended. All kinds of Genoese groups playing all kinds of music have performed here, from punk to rock, reggae and ska. Every night is an event, and there is also a DJ set. Open until the small hours, all die hard clubbers end up here sooner or later.

Sabot

On the Santa Margherita promenade
Piazza Martiri della LibertĂ , 32
Genoa 16100
Italy
If you find yourself on the Santa Margherita promenade on a Friday night, why not try out Sabot? While not too fashionable, it plays loud music, offers excellent cocktails and is open until late. The upstairs tables are a good place to sit, and this is a must in the summer, especially during the Portofino regatta at the beginning of May.
