Armanino

Dried and candied fruits and rarities from all over the world.
Via Sottoripa, 105r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 247 6905
This shop is far from just a fruit shop. Fruit is just the start. It holds a whole series of delicious products like candied fruits, dried fruits and sweets. There are specialties which have been imported from distant countries like dates (for which there is a good range of qualities and some rare types for the connoisseurs among us). The shop undergoes a barrage around Christmas time and is used throughout the year.

Barberia Giacalone

Hair cut like our grandfathers
Vico Caprettari, 14r
Genoa 16123
Italy
+39 10 25 6791
You can find this old barber's shop along the sea front in Via Canneto off the Vico Caprettari. It dates back to 1922 and is perfectly furnished in Art Decco style, making it well-worth a visit. The tiny premises are barely 10 m.sq. They have recently been bought by FAI who have skillfully restored the building, refitting the windows, mirrors and floral decoration. Now back to its old splendor, FAI have reopened it as a barber's shop.

Bozzi

History and local traditions bookshop
Via Cairoli, 2
Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 10 248 1718
This old-style bookshop has understood that its survival depended on specialization. It has therefore concentrated on books on history, traditions, cuisine, guide-books, collections of essays and books regarding the city itself. Its site on the Via Balbi is a stone's throw from the faculties for humanities, law and political science and contains a very well-stocked section on economics and law.

La Baracchetta

Homeland of cheese foccacia
Via Marinai d'Italia
Genoa, Genoa 16100
Italy
+39 18 572 0658
Recco is the birthplace of cheese focaccia. There is no one in Genova who hasn't been there. It is one of the city's secrets which spread like wildfire. It's a hut on the seafront which is like all the other huts except for the fact it makes wonderful focaccia bread. It's open until late and the focaccia is cheap and delicious. It makes a perfect start to an evening on the Riviera. A place for everyone.

Lo Spaventapasseri

Original creations somewhere between grunge and glamour
Via San Donato, 37r
City Centre
Genoa, Genoa 16123
Italy
This shop opened recently in the heart of the city centre. All the clothes and accessories are their own designs. Whilst the materials are not of the best quality, they have the right effect and the minimalist lines are very original and modern. They don't have many garments on display and they are still making more clothes. Their jumpers are somewhere between grunge and fashion, offering an interesting choice at a very reasonable price. The shop itself is charming; it has a raised second floor which gives the store a stagy feel.

Music Store

Music and video megastore
Via Porto Antico, Magazzini del Cotone

The shop is inside the old Cotton warehouse near the Old port. It's open until midnight. It's a huge shop divided into sections (many of which are not well-stocked) of CD's which are then subdivided by price. There are both second hand and new releases, and there is a catalogue which contains both mainstream releases, rereleases and compilations. There are four listening posts and sections for videocassettes and videogames. The staff are friendly and attentive in spite of the cash and carry feeling to the store.

This is a must for anyone who's walking around Genova late at night. The Patrone's oven is turning out focaccia, pizza and croissant at the break of dawn. Located at the end of a narrow lane, it's only a stone's throw from the Expo and the old city centre. The bakery satisfies the most famished appetite. Their onion focaccia bread is a real oasis in the Genoese night. So see you at dawn then!

In summer, customers can sit outside in one of the liveliest and most surprisingly, light alleyways in the historic centre. Great for a lunchtime snack, they sell excellent vegetable flans and offer tea with pastries at teatime. Visitors can also come here for a quick aperitif before it closes at 7pm.
