Big sports events need sponsorship to be able to attract world-class athletes. The Berlin Marathon is thus officially known as the 'Real Berlin Marathon', named after the German supermarket chain. In its inaugural year in 1974, just 286 enthusiastic runners lined up for the start. Since then, the race has become steadily more popular, with some 30,000 competitors reaching the finishing line in 2002 including thousands in wheelchairs and on rollerblades. The Berlin Marathon is regarded as one of the world's fastest marathons, with world records being set on a regular basis. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since its inauguration in 1985, the Chaos Computer Club has organised an annual event which aims at combining discussions about the latest technical developments with (sometimes radical) criticism of technology and society. It addresses both hackers and everyday users as well as businessmen and politicians, often pointing out blatant gaps in data protection. At the same time, the congress is a meeting-place for IT specialists and business representatives. Lectures and workshops are organised to discuss the both the chances and dangers of technological development. The venue changes every year. Gays have always been free to express themselves in liberal-minded Berlin but Christopher Street Day provides the gay movement with the chance to blow its own trumpet and show itself off to the world. The event, which has been held in Berlin since 1979, has grown and grown and attracted nearly 500,000 spectators. Like the Love Parade, the political message is getting pushed further and further into the background, but the parade is nevertheless a great place to party. The Carnival actually begins on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at eleven minutes past eleven, and ends on Ash Wednesday. Prunksitzungen, giant ceremonial parties, begin on 8 January, and things reach a climax on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday), when a massive parade is held. 40 Carnival societies, some of them over 100 years old and 122 bands march through the streets, throwing sweets and flowers into the crowds. Messeplatz 1 (Köln Messe) Köln, NRW 50679 +49 221 821 3747 http://www.imm-cologne.com/ |
Each year, the international Mobelmesse presents the very latest in furniture design. The convention is worth a visit for the lay person as well as the expert, as everybody can relate to the items on show. There is no limit to the imagination that can be put into furniture design, it often has more to do with art than sitting down. Often, a newly designed chair seems like it could have come from a previous decade. The largest furniture convention in the world. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oktoberfest for insiders |
Theresienwiese Schwanthaler Höhe München, Bayern 80336 http://www.muenchner-volksfest... |
Though not as well-known as the Oktoberfest, the Frühlingsfest (Spring Festival) is smaller and just as much fun. In fact, the Frühlingsfest is a bit like the Octoberfest for insiders -the beer tents and fun-fair rides are still there, but the tourists are gone. Great news for all those who like the beer-swilling, oompah band kind of atmosphere but find the crowds at the Oktoberfest too much. It's held in the last week of April and first week of May every year. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pure Folk Fest |
Friedensstraße Beuel-Pützchen Bonn, NRW 53229 http://www.puetzchens-markt.de puetzchens-markt@ga-bonn.de |
There has been a traditional meeting in Beuel-Putzchen for centuries. Originally, it was a pilgrim's market, but today it is one of the biggest folk festivals in North Rhine Westphalia and always takes place in the first and second week of September. For five days this Bonn suburb transforms itself into a chaotic place - the traditional beginning is the opening of the barrel and a church service. The Disco Tent attracts young people in the evenings and a big firework display is held at the end of the festival. Putzchen's market donates its profits to UNICEF. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Every year in May, Bonn is bedlam. The biggest and longest firework display in the Rheinauen attracts more than a hundred thousand spectators. People sit everywhere on the slopes, listen to the music and enjoy the great vibe. When it gets dark, 100 ships travel down the Rhine from Koblenz to the Bonn Rheinauen. All of the ships are colourfully lit and play party music. Then the firework display takes place and celebrations continue until the early hours of the morning. Entry is free. Seventies sounds and kitschy costumes |
Reeperbahn Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 +49 (0)40 3802 3650 http://www.schlagermove.de/ info@schlagermove.de |
Germans love their Schlager music-a kitschy, trashy German-language version of seventies pop. This is celebrated every summer in a colourful parade through the St. Pauli district accompanied by various excessive fringe activities. It is recommended that you start growing sideburns and dig your bell-bottomed flares out of the cupboard in good time! A colourful wig could also come in handy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Berlin derby week |
Mariendorfer Damm 222 Berlin, Berlin 12107 +49 (0)30 740 1212 http://www.berlintrab.de btv@berlintrab.de |
Horse racing fans should be in their element in Berlin, given that the city has three racecourses. As well as the Trabrennbahn Karlshorst (trotting) and the Galopprennbahn Hoppegarten (steeple-chasing and flat racing), both of which are in eastern Berlin, there is also the Trabrennbahn Mariendorf in the south-west, whose grounds, covering 24 hectares, were opened in 1913. The highlight of the season is Derby Week, which takes place in the first week of August every year. The main event is the Derby itself and is held on the final Sunday of Derby Week.
