Scotland's largest indoor market is formally called the Barrowland and is made up of nine distinct markets. You can find almost anything here "from an anchor to a needle." It's often raided by the police because some of the stalls sell goods of slightly dubious origin, i.e. they "fell off the back of a lorry". Still, a trip to the Barras is a fun day out, as you can browse for hours through seemingly endless stalls and might even find something you want to buy. On the last Saturday of every month, there's a special Farmers Market where you can find organic meat, fruit, vegetables, bread, cheeses, free range eggs and countless other things. Be warned, however: traders usually sell out around midday so make sure you're early. If you get hungry, there are a few cafes nearby. This shopping centre is the biggest city centre development in the whole of Scotland, covering an expanse of 600,000 square feet. It opened in 1998 at the top end of Buchanan Street, next to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Its main attraction is John Lewis but it has around 80 other high street shops including Next, Boots and Hennes. There are several good places to sit down for a snack - John Lewis and Habitat both have cafes and the food gallery on the second floor offers four concessions, including Burger King. Traveling in Glasgow and to the rest of Scotland by bus is convenient and comfortable. Express coach services to major Scottish towns and cities are run by Scottish Citylink, services to cities in England and Wales are mostly run by National Express. Both of these companies operate from Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre. You can buy tickets at the bus station or book by phone and then collect them at the Strathclyde Passenger Transport desk. Getting around the city, you can choose from a punctual low-level train network, the 15-stop underground route, normal local buses and the "overground" bus network, which aims to re-create the frequency and simplicity of the underground service above ground. The main local bus operator is First Glasgow, services within Central Glasgow can be boarded from sign posted bus stops but those to the suburbs depart from Buchanan Bus Station.
