Home to the local legend that is Limbo Records, expect to find everything released on that label, as well as a fantastic selection of what's new in the world of house and garage. Techno, hip hop and other club genres are well-represented and they even sell DJ equipment in case you're thinking of a career change. This is a favorite stop of famous local DJs on a shopping trip. Comics and graphic novels |
31-35 Parnie Street Trongate Glasgow G1 5RJ United Kingdom +44 141 552 6692 http://www.a1comics.com/ |
A vast selection of graphic novels and comics both new and back catalogue, which you may be able to avoid paying full price on, can be browsed and bought here. Their discount schemes are generous to say the least - 10 per cent off for students and the unemployed, five per cent off if you have a standing order. As well as the comics themselves, there's lots of tie-in merchandise from cult television programmes, movies and computer games but the shop is fairly big so doesn't seem cluttered. Board games for all ages |
9 Gibson Street Glasgow G12 8NU United Kingdom +44 141 342 4300 |
Several different kinds of Monopoly are sold in this place, but unfortunately none of them tell you how to stop your friends robbing the bank, building hotels on Mayfair and having tantrums when they end up with the shoe counter. You can buy virtually any board game in existence here whether you want the intellectual challenge of Chess, Go and Mah Jong or just something fun and rowdy to play with the family like Rapidough or Guess Who. They also have a great selection of card games, soft toys and magnetic travel games to make long journeys seem shorter. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Conveniently located within a few minutes' walk of the underground station, this is a long established and well-known Glasgow fishmongers with three premises citywide. This one is the most central, with the other two operating from 7 Station Road, Milngavie, and 1620 Great Western Road. They have a great selection of freshly caught seafood, such as salmon, sole, oysters, eels, mussels and a local favorite —Loch Fyne kippers. Game and poultry are also available. Colour me veggie |
56-58 Wilson Street Glasgow G1 1HD United Kingdom +44 141 552 5282 |
This mega-trendy salon is well aware of the competition in town, so have set themselves apart from the pack with a range of out of salon work. Styling for magazine fashion shoots and for television programmes is commonplace and they offer the same model treatment to all their customers. Shows are a regular occurrence and you'll find evidence of this all over the salon. Consultations are free and colouring is priced on a scale of minimum, medium and maximum, according to hair length. You can even try paint-on vegetable tinting for a change of colour without commitment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old-fashioned junk shop |
6 Park Road Kelvinbridge Glasgow G4 9JG United Kingdom +44 141 334 7788 |
It would probably be more accurate to call this a junk shop than an antique shop, but it does have the merit of selling very good junk. A trip here is an entertaining experience as the range of goods is incredibly diverse. They have a limited selection of furniture but a huge amount of costume jewelery, powder compacts and military oddments, as well as tin toys, books, ornate mirrors and china. There is now a "healing room" at the back as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All day every day, this mini-supermarket dispenses newspapers, magazines, cigarettes and junk food. This branch is conveniently located amidst dozens of pubs and clubs, so it's useful for picking up emergency pints of milk and packets of crisps after a night out. Scotland's Oldest Diving Centre |
30 Stanley Street Glasgow G41 1JB United Kingdom +44 0141 429 7575 http://www.aquatron.co.uk/ |
Aquatron is Scotland's oldest diving centre, it's been around since 1969. It sells all the diving equipment and accessories you could possibly want and will be happy to advise on what's best for your needs. In addition, it has a five-star scuba diving school, which runs classes approximately once a month (a basic qualification can be achieved after five separate days of training). Once you've mastered the art of underwater existence - or if you're already an expert - Aquatron will help you to arrange safe but exciting trips to more exotic waters as scuba diving in the River Clyde apparently offers few rewards. Argyll Arcade is a covered street which has the biggest selection of jewelers in Scotland all under one roof. John Baird takes the credit for its ornate iron-framed hammerbeam roof which is as pleasing to the eye as the glittering contents of the shop window displays. This shop sells all the supplies a budding Rembrandt requires so it's a necessary haunt of art students. But as well as brushes, paints and specialist papers, it has a fantastic selection of beads, strings and shiny things for making jewelry and photo frames. It's a great place to find a gift for somebody creative as they have a huge range of kits to choose from, plus toys, magnetic dress-up Venus de Milos, pocket games, novelty items and genuinely amusing greetings cards. Just along from the Aspecto shoe shop at 20 Gordon Street, this place is less footwear-orientated and more clothing obsessed. The labels here are slightly different too, a bit more urban streetwear than urban casual. The young men who choose to shop here tend to be genuinely interested in clothes and are often attracted by the sound of names like Duffer of St George, Timberland, Camper, Paul Smith and Wannabe, while they would be repelled by names like Littlewoods and Poundstretcher. There's also a limited range of shoes for women. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aulds is a very Scottish bakery with a range of savoury pastries that includes the famous steak stoater, bridies, pasties, scotch and macaroni pies. They even do a sort of superior meat pie made from Aberdeen Angus steak, which is a far cry from the kind of thing you'll find on sale down at Ibrox Park. Delicious sweet cakes and pastries are also available as well as cups of hot home-made soup, and there's a cafe at the back of this and most other branches if you'd rather sit in. Aulds also supply baked goods to Safeway supermarkets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scotland's largest indoor market |
6-Apr Stevenson Street Glasgow G40 2ST United Kingdom +44 141 552 4601 http://www.glasgow-barrowland.... |
Scotland's largest indoor market is formally called the Barrowland and is made up of nine distinct markets. You can find almost anything here "from an anchor to a needle." It's often raided by the police because some of the stalls sell goods of slightly dubious origin, i.e. they "fell off the back of a lorry". Still, a trip to the Barras is a fun day out, as you can browse for hours through seemingly endless stalls and might even find something you want to buy. On the last Saturday of every month, there's a special Farmers Market where you can find organic meat, fruit, vegetables, bread, cheeses, free range eggs and countless other things. Be warned, however: traders usually sell out around midday so make sure you're early. If you get hungry, there are a few cafes nearby. The more advenurous will appreciate a hot dog or mussels from one of the vans. Admission: free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The largest city centre development in Scotland |
Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 2FF United Kingdom +44 141 333 9898 http://www.buchanangalleries.c... |
This shopping centre is the biggest city centre development in the whole of Scotland, covering an expanse of 600,000 square feet. It opened in 1998 at the top end of Buchanan Street, next to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Its main attraction is John Lewis but it has around 80 other high street shops including Next, Boots and Hennes. There are several good places to sit down for a snack - John Lewis and Habitat both have cafes and the food gallery on the second floor offers four concessions, including Burger King. The centre is easy to get to as it's only three minutes' drive from the M8 motorway and with 4,500 spaces it won't be a problem parking. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Long haul and regional |
Throughout the city Glasgow United Kingdom +44 141 423 6600 (First Glasgow) |
Traveling in Glasgow and to the rest of Scotland by bus is convenient and comfortable. Express coach services to major Scottish towns and cities are run by Scottish Citylink, services to cities in England and Wales are mostly run by National Express. Both of these companies operate from Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre. You can buy tickets at the bus station or book by phone and then collect them at the Strathclyde Passenger Transport desk. Getting around the city, you can choose from a punctual low-level train network, the 15-stop underground route, normal local buses and the "overground" bus network, which aims to re-create the frequency and simplicity of the underground service above ground. The main local bus operator is First Glasgow, services within Central Glasgow can be boarded from sign posted bus stops but those to the suburbs depart from Buchanan Bus Station. All local services operate on a pay as you board basis, but some do not give change. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With other branches in the St Enoch Centre and Braehead Shopping and Leisure Centre you could be forgiven for thinking this company had a monopoly, because they seem to be everywhere. Great package deals on consoles and gaming software make this a very competitively priced outlet with a supermarket style loyalty card scheme, part-exchanges and second-hand deals that prove to be ample persuasion for customers to keep coming back. This is the only Emporio Armani store in Scotland and it sells the Italian designer's line for the younger generation, with classic cut garments that have an understated elegance to suit every occasion. They are definitely style leaders and this is a popular shop amongst Glasgow's fashion-conscious youth who want to stand out from the crowd on a night out and love the label but not the usual Armani prices. They stock beautiful clothes for men and women here as well as items for boys aged up to 14. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Three floors of trainers |
132 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8BL United Kingdom http://www.footlocker.com/ |
A recent winner of the International Store Design Award, it's taken this company quite long enough to open a branch in Scotland's most stylish city. If you're into trainers and the sports casual look then prepare to be very over-excited by the ranges of trainers that are exclusive to this store. Sports shoes and clothing for all the family are spread over three floors and it's easy to find a helpful assistant because they're dressed like referees, very handy if a fight ensues over the last pair of pink Nikes. It may not be in central Glasgow, but the Forge Shopping Centre does have loads of shops all under one roof. In fact, with 78 different units, there's bound to be the one you need. There are clothes and household stores, gadget and gift shops and a branch of the Asda supermarket chain which stays open until 8p most nights, so you can do all your shopping in one trip. Entertainment for the kids is provided every weekend with magic shows, a clown and free face painting and the UGC Cinema is nearby if you fancy making a day out of it with the family. Authentic Italian deli next to restaurant |
133 Wellington Street Glasgow G2 2XD United Kingdom +44 141 248 2228 |
An authentic Italian deli in the centre of Glasgow, how unusual. If you've eaten at the terrific connecting Fratelli Sarti restaurant then you'll know just how high the standard of produce is here. Fresh pasta rubs shoulders with parma hams, aromatic pesto, the most virginal olive oil known to man and sun-dried tomatoes so rich in flavour and colour that you'll drool all over the shop. A vast selection of wines is also sold and there's usually someone in choosing a bottle to take next door to go with the dinner they're planning to order. If people eat it in Italy, they'll have it here only better, fresher and probably a bit more expensive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is quite a large shop, with a suitably extensive and diverse range of second-hand books. They specialise in Scottish and English literature and art, but have excellent sections devoted to other high-brow fields such as politics, philosophy, religion, history and science. Goods for Girls |

Although it stocks clothing for both sexes, this place is really one for the girls. Vintage gear in remarkably good condition (and equally remarkable good taste) is complemented by a great selection of barely worn pieces from high street shops so you can pick out something old and something new. Look at the labels and you'll notice that a lot of the stock originally came from quite expensive shops so there's a chance of finding designer bargains. They also have almost new boots and shoes at rock bottom prices, costume jewellery and handbags. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The day Swedish firm Hennes & Mauritz opened a branch in Glasgow was a very happy day for the city's shoppers indeed. This store stocks a great range of low-priced trendy and classic clothes and accessories for all the family, not forgetting the kiddies or expectant mothers who are too often left with a choice of voluminous kaftans and dreary dungarees. But if you see something you like, buy it then and there, because their stock changes faster than fashion. Specialists in Afro and Euro hair, this is probably the best salon in Glasgow if you want a radical new look as it's the first Scottish Afro Hairdressing School. It's tiny but very brightly decorated in a vaguely 70's retro way, which helps you to keep awake if you're there for the several hours it takes to install dreadlocks, braids or extensions. They also cut, curl, color and straighten wayward locks with expertise so if hairdressers usually give you the shaggy blow-dried poodle look, come here instead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Frasers is an institution which shows a Glasgow both traditional and modern. Although this chain can now be found in cities across the UK, it was founded here in 1849. It houses European designer clothes as well as upmarket Scottish tweeds and tartans. The interior is splendidly ornate, with a grand staircase leading to the other floors and balconies. The store is huge, lavish and designed like a maze, so it's even easier than usual to lose yourself in the joy of shopping. The ground floor is devoted to menswear (both classic and contemporary), shoes, upmarket cosmetics concessions (including MAC, Bobbi Brown, Aveda and Philosophy) and accessories. If you're the same height as a supermodel, with or without the figure, then venture into this ladies wear store for a treat. Inside leg lengths available go up to 36" and sizes 20-22 are the biggest dress sizes on offer. Garments themselves are trendy and made in top quality fabrics, like chenille and cotton. Sexy little knitted tops, business-like suits and casual everyday wear are all mixed up together in this melting pot of chic clothes for tall girls. Eclectic range of CDs and vinyl |
DeCourcy's Arcade, Cresswell Lane Glasgow G12 8AA United Kingdom |
There's no turning back, a free moment spent browsing here soon becomes a lifetime. They have a large and eclectic selection of new and second-hand CDs, cassettes, videos and vinyl, although some of the stock is rather strange and it's not arranged by genre. It's best to go in with a vague idea of what kind of music you want to walk away with rather than any specific album because you probably won't find it amidst the clutter. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With a 'pile it high and sell it low' attitude these people are determined to spread the word about fine wines. There are regular spotlights on wine-producing countries like Chile, New Zealand and Argentina, and an indication of which wines are vegetarian or organic. The most novel aspect to this shop is the sizeable discount on bulk buys (six bottles or more), but look out for other special offers and bin ends of famous names at knockdown prices. It's aimed at the party/wedding market but with competitive prices on single bottles, along with an unparalleled range, it's open to everyone. Specially selected bottles are always offered for sampling, there's also free parking, a party service, glass loan and free delivery. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A strong Scottish flavour prevails here, but not the tartan-edged theme; this is a highly sophisticated international jewellers, with a strong historical bent. Established in 1895, they have become home to a huge chunk of Glasgow's hidden history with a massive selection of Victorian and art nouveau items. Prices are surprisingly cheap. Many come in the original boxes that they were sold in. Look for regular markdowns to make room for new pieces in the ever-changing window display. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This family-run business is one of the friendliest shops in Glasgow. Stepping over the threshold is like entering a bygone age, so if you want a story to tell your friends that no one else will have, this place is definitely worth a visit. As well as the packed window display in which Victorian earrings, rings and lockets jostle for space with nouveau brooches and pendants, there's an honest valuation service. Classic, well-cut clothing for all the family |
70-76 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8AG United Kingdom +44 141 226 3311 http://www.next.co.uk/ |
This is a large and busy store that comprises clothing for all the family and a range of items to adorn your home. The latter includes an array of stylish candles and knicknacks, bed linen, covers for cushions and a range of crockery. The clothes are much the same - menswear features good-quality jumpers and sweaters in mostly neutral colors as well as a fairly wide choice of suits, shirts, ties, socks and so on. The womens wear range makes concessions to street wear, with combat style trousers, body warmers and fleeces, but the more classic and formal end of the range is well represented too and it's a great place to buy a suit. Children and babies are well catered for, with adorable and soft mini-fleeces, combats and hooded tops. Everything in this store is sensibly priced and of good quality. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Portugal's finest foods |
108 Queen Margaret Drive Kelvinside Glasgow G20 8NZ United Kingdom +44 141 946 5365 |
An excellent and unusual little delicatessen and diner, North Star specialises in foods from Portugal and Southern Europe. Check out the window display for the wide range of ciabatta and pannini fillings then go inside and browse a little more, you'll be starving by the time you've made a choice. Catering for a largely takeaway market, they've covered every base with the addition of a boutique cafe area. In the chiller cabinets there are meats, cheeses and salads from all over the world and a range of positively illegal sticky cakes and desserts. On the shelves opposite you'll find imported delicacies that aren't sold elsewhere in Scotland, such as handmade pastas, home-made preserves (including the world's best marmalade), coffee and fruity teas. 54-56 Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 3JE United Kingdom +44 141 248 8346 http://www.office.co.uk/ |
Funky footwear of the highest order, but not at the high prices you might expect. The first part of this store is for grown-ups of both sexes and comprises everything from dainty, beaded slip-ons and strappy, pastel clubbing shoes to clumpy loafers and platforms. When you've spotted the footwear of your dreams, relax on their multi-colored, stripy leather seats and wait for the assistant's quick return. Venture into the back section of the shop, cutely titled Offspring, and you'll enter a slightly younger market in trainers and sports shoes with all the popular brands like Merril, Converse and Acupuncture. The store sounds are popular and clubby but don't dominate, giving you the opportunity to confer with friends. This is the only branch of Office in Scotland. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Contemporary designer jewellery |
49 Bank Street Glasgow G12 8NF United Kingdom +44 141 357 6999 |
The sign above this shop is distinctive as much for its incomprehensibility as for its stylishness. As in the ABBA logo, the first two letters are inverted so you struggle to pronounce what appears to be Cyrillic. Work by the shop's owner is complemented by collections from about a dozen other independent artists from all over the world. They feature collections from up and coming young designers and creations from Orro have even been worn to the Oscars. Many pieces are in silver, although gold and platinum also make an appearance, and whilst every designer brings their own distinctive style, there's an overall sense of exquisitely modern simplicity, even in the most ornate of trinkets. Based in Orkney, these silversmiths have been producing jewellery for over 30 years. There's a big emphasis on tradition, but with the magical blend of Scottish and Norse cultures you'll soon realize that there's nothing quite like it. Designs are based on original markings, artefacts and drawings from the Hebrides, like the Pictish stone designs in the Orkney range. The Charles Rennie Mackintosh range is particularly popular. 6 Buchanan Galleries Glasgow G1 2FF United Kingdom +44 141 353 1500 http://www.ottakars.co.uk/ |
The best things are rumoured to come in small packages and this compact shop confirms it. Comfy armchairs and a Costa Coffee bar are perfect for browsing and decisions, while a quarter of the space is given over to an excellent children's section called Launch Pad. The idea behind this is to encourage kids to read by making books fun, so there's also a range of cool but educational toys and interactive "stations" developed with the help of the Science Museum to keep them amused. It's quite small compared to other book chains in the city but this is the easiest place to locate a specific title when you're in a hurry. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eclectic selection at low prices |
171 Byres Road Glasgow G12 8TS United Kingdom |
As you might expect from a charity shop, the stock depends on what the public have chosen to donate so it's eclectic to say the least. However, sharp eyes have been known to unearth rare first editions in precisely this kind of shop and blunter eyes will no doubt be amused by all the old Broons and Oor Wullie annuals, which incidentally would make a rather unusual souvenir as they feature authentic Scottish dialects and slang. The general fiction section always has a good choice of recent publications, many of which are still working their way up the bestseller lists when they hit the shelves here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The gorgeous interior of these two adjacent shops, one for underwear and nightclothes, the other for daywear, is like a luxurious bedroom. Thick carpets on the floor, mirrors with small, forgiving lights dotted around them and plush fitting rooms can mean only one thing. Yes, this is an exclusive, expensive boutique with some of Europe's top fashion names; Dior and Louis Ferraud to name but two. No prices are displayed in the window because if you have to ask you can't afford it. But inside, prices on marked down items are fairly normal, £5 for Dior hosiery for example. Both shops have a wide range of sizes and are particularly good for ladies with a larger bust. Friendly staff are on hand to help fit specially made mastectomy and maternity bras and swimwear. 48 Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 3JX United Kingdom +44 141 204 1685 http://www.princessquare.co.uk/ |
Princes Square is easily the most favoured and famous shopping centre in Glasgow - probably because of its high-quality shops and art nouveau surroundings. The stylish cafes, bars and restaurants also prove a potent draw and are all open until midnight. The building dates from 1841, although the original architect (John Baird) would recognise little in the modern interior, which boasts a glass ceiling and elevators as well as lavishly ornate ironwork and a grand staircase. When you tire of looking around the five floors of shops, many of which cannot be found elsewhere in Scotland, relax with a coffee and admire the mosaics, fountain and Foucault Pendulum. Glasgow's oldest station, Queen Street has been around since 1842. It was re-built in 1878, when a low-level station was incorporated into the structure. There are frequent services to cities and major towns in Scotland from here - trains leave regularly for Edinburgh and the east as well as the far north, and are operated by ScotRail. It's quite a small station but there are a few retail outlets, a sandwich bar, Burger King and a pub. A great variety of tobaccos and pipes is on offer here. Glasgow's wealth was made on the back of the tobacco trade in the 17th and 18th centuries so it is only natural that its importance should continue. You can buy cigarettes, Cuban cigars, rolling papers, filters, leather tobacco cases, lighters and packaged or loose tobacco for both pipes and cigarettes. It's a nasty habit, but if you smoke this is a good place to indulge the vice. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This city centre mini-supermarket welcomes thousands of hungry shoppers every day. Convenience is the main aim, with ready-prepared dinners, sandwiches with exciting fillings, hot baked potatoes with a choice of toppings and a salad bar. There's a restricted selection of other goods but you're more likely to stop here for a snack than do the week's grocery shopping. Now a Glasgow landmark as an indoor market, the original name "The Cumming & Smith Building" derived from the warehouse owners who commissioned it from Henry and David Barclay in 1891. The current name comes from the Savoy Cinema, which was accessed through the centre's main door. Catering to the low end of the market, this is an excellent place to go if a visit to the bigger Barras frightens you. This is a great little toy shop with an old-fashioned style of stock, none of those nasty violent toys here. Europe's biggest glass building |
55 Saint Enoch Place Glasgow G1 4BW United Kingdom +44 141 204 3900 http://www.stenoch.com/ |
The St Enoch Centre is the largest all-glass building in Europe and that is probably the best thing you can say about it visually. It has, however, become one of Glasgow's best-known landmarks. The complex contains over 80 stores, mostly chains, and Scotland's biggest food court. You can expect to find many British high street stores here such as Boots, BhS, Debenhams, Oasis, Burton and TK Maxx. Their kiddy cabs and children's play area make shopping with the whole family a little less stressful and the choice of eating options will keep everyone happy. It may not offer the city's most exciting shopping experience but the huge variety of shops all under one roof makes this a good choice for retail therapy in a city that enjoys more than its fair share of rainy days. Glasgow taxis |
Throughout the city Glasgow United Kingdom +44 141 429 7070 (Glasgow Taxis Ltd) |
Glasgow taxis are traditionally black hackney cabs, but these days many are brightly painted with adverts. Nevertheless, they are recognizable by the distinctive shape and the "taxi" sign on the roof, which is lit up when the taxi is available for hire. There are about 1,500 City Council licensed hackney cabs in Glasgow. Private minicabs cannot be hailed on the street, but are often cheaper. You can get taxis at the designated ranks, which are signposted as well as marked on the asphalt, or by phoning the company or hailing one on the street if the sign is lit up. Taxi stands can be found at Central Station at the Gordon Street and Union Street exits, at the North Hanover Street exit at Queen Street Station and at all exits from Buchanan Bus Station. Most taxis have a maximum capacity of five people and almost all of them offer disabled access. There is a minimum fee of £1.60 and once that is exceeded it goes up at 20p intervals, it costs approximately £2.40 for a two kilometer journey. The meter and a table listing supplementary charges for bank holidays or exceeding the city boundary are visible to passengers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

From tappers to tutus, at this specialist dance store you will find everything you could possibly need for recreational, professional or competitive dancing, except talent and co-ordination. Oddly enough, this is also a specialist supplier of wedding shoes - if you bring your own fabric they can make shoes to perfectly match the gown. The helpful staff will make sure you choose the appropriate footwear for any big day and if you like the style but not the colour, you can use their shoe dying service. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scotland has always been renowned for its national drink whisky, also known in these parts as "the water of life". Staff are willing and able to offer advice and samples if customers feel a little overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of bottles lining the walls, but if you're looking for something special that isn't in stock, just place an order and they'll do their best to track it down. The first thing that hits you as you walk into any Woolworths store is the sheer amount of sweets and chocolates that is on display - a considerable temptation for parents as well as children. Woolies sells all manner of practical household items at very reasonable prices but also has a brilliant collection of magazines, toys, computer games, CDs and videos. It's a great place to go for Christmas decorations, souvenirs and greetings cards as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |
