Comics and graphic novels |
31-35 Parnie Street Trongate Glasgow G1 5RJ United Kingdom +44 141 552 6692 http://www.a1comics.com/ |
A vast selection of graphic novels and comics both new and back catalogue, which you may be able to avoid paying full price on, can be browsed and bought here. Their discount schemes are generous to say the least - 10 per cent off for students and the unemployed, five per cent off if you have a standing order. As well as the comics themselves, there's lots of tie-in merchandise from cult television programmes, movies and computer games but the shop is fairly big so doesn't seem cluttered. Old, new and rare |
483 Great Western Road Glasgow G12 8HL United Kingdom +44 141 334 9663 http://www.caledoniabooks.co.uk/ |
Antiquarian and rare books can be bought and ordered here. Although it's predominantly a specialist store, there's an eclectic selection of second-hand books, mostly hard-backs in good condition ranging from the latest Jilly Cooper blockbuster to documentary histories of life under Stalin. Luckily, the management encourages browsing because once you start looking through the books here it's impossible to stop, just in case you miss a hidden treasure that could change your life. Caledonia is also one of the first stops students make after seeing their reading lists because it's a great place for cheap second-hand textbooks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Antiquarian Books |
182 Bath Street Glasgow G2 4HG United Kingdom +44 141 333 1992 http://www.cooperhay.com/ |
To put it simply, this is a collector's paradise. As a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, there is really no better shop in the city for those hard to find, out of print titles, or for having the tattered editions you already own re-bound. Although they sell old and rare books, specialising in art, architecture and Scottish, expect to be pleasantly surprised by the condition of the wares and the diversity of topics covered, if not by the prices. Every taste accommodated |
43 Bank Street Glasgow G12 8NE United Kingdom +44 141 339 7504 |
This is quite a large shop, with a suitably extensive and diverse range of second-hand books. They specialise in Scottish and English literature and art, but have excellent sections devoted to other high-brow fields such as politics, philosophy, religion, history and science. It's a great shop to browse in as there are so many books and every genre is covered. If you're looking for a quick fix of cheap escapist nonsense, try the bargain boxes out front. Right for reading and coffee drinking |
6 Buchanan Galleries Glasgow G1 2FF United Kingdom +44 141 353 1500 http://www.ottakars.co.uk/ |
The best things are rumoured to come in small packages and this compact shop confirms it. Comfy armchairs and a Costa Coffee bar are perfect for browsing and decisions, while a quarter of the space is given over to an excellent children's section called Launch Pad. The idea behind this is to encourage kids to read by making books fun, so there's also a range of cool but educational toys and interactive "stations" developed with the help of the Science Museum to keep them amused. It's quite small compared to other book chains in the city but this is the easiest place to locate a specific title when you're in a hurry. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eclectic selection at low prices |
171 Byres Road Glasgow G12 8TS United Kingdom |
As you might expect from a charity shop, the stock depends on what the public have chosen to donate so it's eclectic to say the least. However, sharp eyes have been known to unearth rare first editions in precisely this kind of shop and blunter eyes will no doubt be amused by all the old Broons and Oor Wullie annuals, which incidentally would make a rather unusual souvenir as they feature authentic Scottish dialects and slang. The general fiction section always has a good choice of recent publications, many of which are still working their way up the bestseller lists when they hit the shelves here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Glasgow's oldest second-hand book shop |
14-Dec Otago Lane Glasgow G12 8PB United Kingdom +44 141 339 1811 |
The name and atmosphere in this shop (it even has a winter fire and sleepy cat)lend it a certain Dickensian flavour and in fact it's the city's oldest second-hand book store. The location attracts students hunting down cheap textbooks while an eclectic stock covering a broad range of subjects brings in everyone who reads for the sheer pleasure of it.They have every genre of literature imaginable — Proust to Jackie Collins and everything in between. Five floors of books and a coffee shop |
153-157 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow G2 3EW United Kingdom +44 141 332 9105 http://www.waterstones.co.uk/ |
More than just a bookstore, this place has the largest number of titles available under one roof in the whole of Scotland. Five floors of shelves are crammed with the latest literary efforts of everyone's favorite authors, as well as more obscure ones. This is a vast shrine to the written word which pays more than lip service to the idea of customer care. The basement houses a Costa coffee cafe and there are lots of brightly colored sofas and armchairs on every floor so you can make the difficult decision of what book to read next in total comfort. Internet access, author readings, book signings, story-telling and discount promotions are also on offer, while special events include themed parties and free Friday night film club screenings.
