Argyll Arcade

Largest jewellers' arcade in Scotland
30 Buchanan Street
Glasgow G2 8BX
United Kingdom
+44 141 221 6680
Argyll Arcade is a covered street which has the biggest selection of jewelers in Scotland all under one roof. John Baird takes the credit for its ornate iron-framed hammerbeam roof which is as pleasing to the eye as the glittering contents of the shop window displays. The L-shaped arcade was built in 1904 and to this day houses an array of local jewelery designers' shops as well as antique jewelers shops.

Just along from the Aspecto shoe shop at 20 Gordon Street, this place is less footwear-orientated and more clothing obsessed. The labels here are slightly different too, a bit more urban streetwear than urban casual. The young men who choose to shop here tend to be genuinely interested in clothes and are often attracted by the sound of names like Duffer of St George, Timberland, Camper, Paul Smith and Wannabe, while they would be repelled by names like Littlewoods and Poundstretcher. There's also a limited range of shoes for women.

Goods for Girls

Although it stocks clothing for both sexes, this place is really one for the girls. Vintage gear in remarkably good condition (and equally remarkable good taste) is complemented by a great selection of barely worn pieces from high street shops so you can pick out something old and something new. Look at the labels and you'll notice that a lot of the stock originally came from quite expensive shops so there's a chance of finding designer bargains. They also have almost new boots and shoes at rock bottom prices, costume jewellery and handbags.

The day Swedish firm Hennes & Mauritz opened a branch in Glasgow was a very happy day for the city's shoppers indeed. This store stocks a great range of low-priced trendy and classic clothes and accessories for all the family, not forgetting the kiddies or expectant mothers who are too often left with a choice of voluminous kaftans and dreary dungarees. But if you see something you like, buy it then and there, because their stock changes faster than fashion. It's always busy and there's usually a sale on, which is great to hear when you want to buy everything you see. Another branch can be found a little out of town in Braehead Shopping and Leisure Centre.

Old wood and ornate mirrors give Monsoon a classic, luxurious feel that is reflected in the clothes. Opulent fabrics (wool, angora, silk, cashmere) are very much in vogue, as are deep, rich colors - jewel reds and blues, rain forest greens. The style tends towards frills, lace, ruffles and tiny sewn-on mirrors and ribbons. Long billowing skirts and loosely cut but elegant knitwear abound. Accessories also tend to be quite formal and elegant. There's a range of clothes for the more dress-conscious child which is, again, quite heavy on ribbons and ornamentation. Monsoon are also responsible for the perfume of the same name - you can buy it in the stores.

This is a large and busy store that comprises clothing for all the family and a range of items to adorn your home. The latter includes an array of stylish candles and knicknacks, bed linen, covers for cushions and a range of crockery. The clothes are much the same - menswear features good-quality jumpers and sweaters in mostly neutral colors as well as a fairly wide choice of suits, shirts, ties, socks and so on. The womens wear range makes concessions to street wear, with combat style trousers, body warmers and fleeces, but the more classic and formal end of the range is well represented too and it's a great place to buy a suit. Children and babies are well catered for, with adorable and soft mini-fleeces, combats and hooded tops. Everything in this store is sensibly priced and of good quality.

The sign above this shop is distinctive as much for its incomprehensibility as for its stylishness. As in the ABBA logo, the first two letters are inverted so you struggle to pronounce what appears to be Cyrillic. Work by the shop's owner is complemented by collections from about a dozen other independent artists from all over the world. They feature collections from up and coming young designers and creations from Orro have even been worn to the Oscars. Many pieces are in silver, although gold and platinum also make an appearance, and whilst every designer brings their own distinctive style, there's an overall sense of exquisitely modern simplicity, even in the most ornate of trinkets.

There's a big emphasis on tradition, but with the magical blend of Scottish and Norse cultures you'll soon realize that there's nothing quite like it. Yes, this is an exclusive, expensive boutique with some of Europe's top fashion names; Dior and Louis Ferraud to name but two. No prices are displayed in the window because if you have to ask you can't afford it. But inside, prices on marked down items are fairly normal, £5 for Dior hosiery for example. http://www.pringle-of-scotland...
An absolute must for overseas visitors who want to buy traditionally Scottish gifts for friends and family back home. This shop stocks everything connected with Caledonia except haggis and cabers, although they could probably get you one if you really wanted. The name Pringle is generally associated with golf jumpers, which they still manufacture and sell, along with more fashionable styles of knitwear. They also have knitwear from Johnstons of Elgin, Harris Tweed, Celtic jewellery, shortbread, clan information and lots of tartan. The company is part of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill so expect the same high quality and friendly hospitable atmosphere. As well as sterling and credit cards, they accept US dollars and most major EU currencies.

Groovy gear for hip chicks
2-9 Belmont Lane
Glasgow G12 8EN
United Kingdom
+44 141 576 0165
For unusual 50s, 60s and 70s evening gowns, tight jeans and cord car coats, step back in time and up these steps. All the casual gear is just above street level with a good selection of second-hand denim, cords, jackets and brightly patterned polyester shirts, all at very reasonable prices. The basement contains a browser's dreamworld. As well as cocktail and evening frocks there are drawers of antique slips and camisoles, linen and long gloves, beaded bags and antique costume jewellery. Shoes are spike heeled and glittery, although it seems that ladies used to have smaller feet so check the size before beginning a love affair with any strappy stiletto sandals or they'll only go and break your heart.

Refined is the key word here. There's a lovely relaxing atmosphere - soft, gentle music wafts past as you browse through the garments dotted around the edges of this small, square shop. Both men and women are catered for on different sides of the store. Fabrics include pure wool and cotton, but they also stock new fabrics with a wet-look, ideal for clubbing. Designer names like Herbert Wong, Peter Werth and Great Plains feature strongly. Footwear is big and bold, mainly trainers from Acupuncture.

http://www.tedbaker.co.uk/
This big and beautiful store has two glass walls that flood the interior with light. Ted Baker's fun, stylish clothes look even better in such a bright and airy setting. Skilfully-cut shirts are very much in evidence, along with a great range of men's jumpers, suits and trousers, but it's the introduction of a large Ted Baker Woman section that makes this store special. Clothes for the girls include smart but funky trousers, neat-fitting shirts in a range of colours, and covetable tops in cosy-but-cool fabrics. The staff are as bright and breezy as the store, always willing, even on a busy Saturday, to engage in a chat while helping you pick a new outfit.
