Scale of the century |
188 Byres Road Glasgow G12 8SN United Kingdom +44 141 357 2766 |
Conveniently located within a few minutes' walk of the underground station, this is a long established and well-known Glasgow fishmongers with three premises citywide. This one is the most central, with the other two operating from 7 Station Road, Milngavie, and 1620 Great Western Road. They have a great selection of freshly caught seafood, such as salmon, sole, oysters, eels, mussels and a local favorite —Loch Fyne kippers. Game and poultry are also available. Late night shopping |
403 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow G2 3LG United Kingdom +44 141 333 1010 |
All day every day, this mini-supermarket dispenses newspapers, magazines, cigarettes and junk food. This branch is conveniently located amidst dozens of pubs and clubs, so it's useful for picking up emergency pints of milk and packets of crisps after a night out. There's a bank machine on either side should you be a little short of cash, and the taxi rank is just across the road. Also on Great Western Road, George Street and Bearsden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh and filling baked goods |
3 West Nile Street Glasgow G1 2PS United Kingdom +44 141 248 8591 |
Aulds is a very Scottish bakery with a range of savoury pastries that includes the famous steak stoater, bridies, pasties, scotch and macaroni pies. They even do a sort of superior meat pie made from Aberdeen Angus steak, which is a far cry from the kind of thing you'll find on sale down at Ibrox Park. Delicious sweet cakes and pastries are also available as well as cups of hot home-made soup, and there's a cafe at the back of this and most other branches if you'd rather sit in. Aulds also supply baked goods to Safeway supermarkets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aladdin would love it |
421 Great Western Road Glasgow G4 9JA United Kingdom +44 141 357 5550 |
A great little deli with an extensive range of European food and drink, in a rather thirsty part of the Kelvinbridge area of the city. Their small coffee bar has bar stools by the window which allows customers to watch the world go by as they enjoy their daily freshly brewed caffeine fix. There's an excellent selection of fine wines with a convenient chiller box available to make your bottle of white instantly drinkable. Check the blackboards in the street outside for daily bargains in wines and spirits, including some excellent malt whiskies. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Handy for the city centre, this long established off-sales has an excellent range of Scottish whiskies and what's more they have a range that covers every budget. All the big names are here, but even connoisseurs will find a few new ones. The whisky gift packs, including glasses, make excellent presents for fathers and friends alike. Alternatively, if you fancy a fine bottle of wine to accompany dinner, you'll find a wealth of regions and grapes to choose from. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Authentic Italian deli next to restaurant |
133 Wellington Street Glasgow G2 2XD United Kingdom +44 141 248 2228 |
An authentic Italian deli in the centre of Glasgow, how unusual. If you've eaten at the terrific connecting Fratelli Sarti restaurant then you'll know just how high the standard of produce is here. Fresh pasta rubs shoulders with parma hams, aromatic pesto, the most virginal olive oil known to man and sun-dried tomatoes so rich in flavour and colour that you'll drool all over the shop. A vast selection of wines is also sold and there's usually someone in choosing a bottle to take next door to go with the dinner they're planning to order. If people eat it in Italy, they'll have it here only better, fresher and probably a bit more expensive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Organic fruit and vegetables are sold seasonally, and the shelves are filled with everything from herbal teas to Dead Sea shampoo. They also stock a range of breads and sell freshly made meals and snacks such as vegetarian lasagne, falafel, bean burritos and moussaka. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scottish and continental cheeses |
492 Great Western Road Glasgow G12 8EW United Kingdom +44 141 339 8998 http://www.ijmellischeesemonge... |
This cheesemonger owes its loyal clientele to its specialty - handmade, unpasteurized, farmhouse cheeses made in Britain and Ireland, which you're welcome to sample before buying. Alongside these delicious moulds stand jars of condiments, pickles, olive oils and vinegars. They also have a selection of tasty Scottish oatcakes and biscuits to enjoy with your cheese. Established since 1995, this is a cheese-fan's mecca, but be prepared - the shop has a rather pungent aroma. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A frothy little Mediterranean deli, it's hard to walk on by if you've already glanced in the window. They also stock jars of authentic pasta sauces, fresh and dried pasta, antipasti, packets of Italian biscuits and wholemeal pizzas slices that you can re-heat at home for a tasty snack. Organic meat from Orkney |
85 Lauderdale Gardens Hyndland Glasgow G12 9QU United Kingdom +44 141 334 8973 |
This is a family-run business that's always keeping an eye out for the best suppliers. One of the few butchers to sell organic meat, they have a wide range of game and poultry and make their own highly-acclaimed sausages, haggis and delicious meat pies on the premises. All the animals can be traced back to their farms of origin on the island of Orkney, where there has never been a single case of BSE and they once led idyllic, grass-fed lives. Great for bulk buys |
123-145 North Street Charing Cross Glasgow G3 7DA United Kingdom +44 141 204 4936 http://www.majestic.co.uk/ |
With a 'pile it high and sell it low' attitude these people are determined to spread the word about fine wines. There are regular spotlights on wine-producing countries like Chile, New Zealand and Argentina, and an indication of which wines are vegetarian or organic. The most novel aspect to this shop is the sizeable discount on bulk buys (six bottles or more), but look out for other special offers and bin ends of famous names at knockdown prices. It's aimed at the party/wedding market but with competitive prices on single bottles, along with an unparalleled range, it's open to everyone. Specially selected bottles are always offered for sampling, there's also free parking, a party service, glass loan and free delivery. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Portugal's finest foods |
108 Queen Margaret Drive Kelvinside Glasgow G20 8NZ United Kingdom +44 141 946 5365 |
An excellent and unusual little delicatessen and diner, North Star specialises in foods from Portugal and Southern Europe. Check out the window display for the wide range of ciabatta and pannini fillings then go inside and browse a little more, you'll be starving by the time you've made a choice. Catering for a largely takeaway market, they've covered every base with the addition of a boutique cafe area. In the chiller cabinets there are meats, cheeses and salads from all over the world and a range of positively illegal sticky cakes and desserts. On the shelves opposite you'll find imported delicacies that aren't sold elsewhere in Scotland, such as handmade pastas, home-made preserves (including the world's best marmalade), coffee and fruity teas. 93 Mitchell Street Glasgow G1 3LN United Kingdom +44 141 221 4760 http://www.oddbins.co.uk/ |
This super chain of liquor stores has won so many awards it hardly seems worth anyone else entering. Wines are available to suit all tastes and budgets and are imported from every corner of the globe while at the back of this branch is the Fine Wines Center, a must for those who consider themselves connoisseurs. Not only do they supply us with bottles from every region and grape variety, there's also an exciting selection of spirits and beers, including Double Chocolate stout and the amusingly named and very cheap Dumb Blond lager. Cream cakes and coffee |
138 Byres Road Glasgow G12 8TD United Kingdom +44 141 334 1882 |
Another branch of this patisserie can be found at 45 Cochrane Street, G1 1HL. Since it was established in 1970, people have been gazing through the window at the cream cakes, gateaux, cheesecakes and tartes, while they calculate the day's calorie intake so far and convince themselves that an eclair is virtually fat-free. Patisserie Francoise also serves pizzas, pasta and salads, as well as supplying special occasion cakes and outside catering. Inside, it's airy, quiet and spacious, making a welcome respite from the often maddening crowds which throng Byres Road. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Everything you could want for a picnic you'll find here. There's a delicious variety of continental cheeses, sausages and cold meats as well as Scottish ones. They also have a good selection of wine, beer, freshly baked bread, cakes, biscuits, exotic ice-cream and frozen yoghurt. Recently, they started selling gourmet ready meals that only need a few minutes in the microwave, perfect if you want to impress but don't have time to cook a fabulous meal from scratch. Organic alternatives are available for many products as this is quite an upmarket shop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stop off for a quick bite |
220 Buchanan Street 236-240 Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 2GF United Kingdom +44 141 332 1480 http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/ |
This city centre mini-supermarket welcomes thousands of hungry shoppers every day. Convenience is the main aim, with ready-prepared dinners, sandwiches with exciting fillings, hot baked potatoes with a choice of toppings and a salad bar. There's a restricted selection of other goods but you're more likely to stop here for a snack than do the week's grocery shopping. It tends to be very busy as lots of locals who work in the city call in to pick up something nice for lunch or tea, while crowds of tourists exclaim at the strange things that people like to eat in Scotland. Dolma, tabolah, baklawa, babaghanouj and lots of other easy to eat and difficult to spell delicacies are on offer here. At this Middle Eastern deli it's perfectly okay just to point at what you want if you can't pronounce the name. As well as the above, they have fresh bread, olives, a selection of cheeses including feta, lots of spices and a good choice of tasty and exotic pre-packaged foods and snacks for adventurous shoppers. Exotic fruits and other edibles |
381 Great Western Road Glasgow, Lanarkshire G4 9HY United Kingdom +44 141 337 1338 |
This may not look like a very interesting grocer's shop but it's one of the finest purveyors of strange foodstuffs in the west end. Run by local eccentric and occasional TV star Solly, you can find alligator and kangaroo steaks in the freezer nestled beside swordfish and shark, with a confusing array of Oriental and African fruit and vegetables to accompany your choice, as well as the better-known varieties. There's a long list pinned up of all the kinds of meat available if you want to order something special. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Central supermarket with low prices |
Dec-38 Howard Street St Enoch Square Glasgow G1 4AZ United Kingdom +44 141 221 0181 |
Hidden behind the huge St Enoch Centre and that strange Travel Centre building in the middle of the square, it's possible to live in Glasgow for years without noticing this supermarket, even though it's as central as can be. Despite the location, it's a lot cheaper and more spacious than other food shops in the area and they have their own range of value for money products as well as stocking the usual well-known brands. Conveniently located Metro store |
36 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8AD United Kingdom +44 141 201 7400 http://www.tesco.com/ |
There are only two branches of this store in Glasgow, the Tesco Metro in the city centre, and a larger version in Milngavie. They may be outnumbered by other supermarket chains but this is an essential stop for most people who work in the center, as well as shoppers on their way home. All the usual everyday household products and foods are here, represented by the most popular brands and Tesco's excellent own-label goods. Freshly baked bread gives the store an enticing aroma, and the Danish pastries are particularly tasty. A fairly new idea is the gourmet section, which offers pre-packed ready meals and deli-type foods of a decidedly upmarket quality. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Glasgow institution since 1841 |
79 Renfield Street Glasgow G2 1LP United Kingdom +44 141 332 6380 http://www.thomsonscoffee.com/ |
One of those easily overlooked Glasgow institutions, this shop has been selling quality teas and coffees since the days of the Tobacco Lords in 1841. There's a distinct absence of the brash commerciality that typifies the larger companies but the range doesn't suffer for it. As well as teas with character they have over 20 different kinds of coffee and lots of related gifts such as percolators, grinders and tea sets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Designer cakes for special occasions |
76 Hyndland Road Hyndland Glasgow G12 9UT United Kingdom +44 141 334 4244 http://www.toptiercakes.com |
Nowadays, you can find special novelty cakes in all the supermarkets and bakeries, but anyone who wants to celebrate a really special occasion comes here. These made to order designer cakes are pure works of art and genuinely look too pretty to eat, which is almost a crime because they taste just as good. Prices range from about £30-£600 and they like to have at least a week's notice for orders. There's another shop at 70 Bell Street and both sell all the necessary equipment, such as sugar paste and marzipan, for those who fancy a go at cake-decorating themselves. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A fantastic one-stop shop for organophiles in the south side. The company's aim is to provide an extensive choice and popularise the use of organic produce. Clear labelling caters for special diets, so expect to see yeast free and dairy free logos amongst others on every shelf. Review © 2007, Wcities |
