Comics and graphic novels |
31-35 Parnie Street Trongate Glasgow G1 5RJ United Kingdom +44 141 552 6692 http://www.a1comics.com/ |
A vast selection of graphic novels and comics both new and back catalogue, which you may be able to avoid paying full price on, can be browsed and bought here. Their discount schemes are generous to say the least - 10 per cent off for students and the unemployed, five per cent off if you have a standing order. As well as the comics themselves, there's lots of tie-in merchandise from cult television programmes, movies and computer games but the shop is fairly big so doesn't seem cluttered. Colour me veggie |
56-58 Wilson Street Glasgow G1 1HD United Kingdom +44 141 552 5282 |
This mega-trendy salon is well aware of the competition in town, so have set themselves apart from the pack with a range of out of salon work. Styling for magazine fashion shoots and for television programmes is commonplace and they offer the same model treatment to all their customers. Shows are a regular occurrence and you'll find evidence of this all over the salon. Consultations are free and colouring is priced on a scale of minimum, medium and maximum, according to hair length. You can even try paint-on vegetable tinting for a change of colour without commitment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Largest jewellers' arcade in Scotland |
30 Buchanan Street Glasgow G2 8BX United Kingdom +44 141 221 6680 |
Argyll Arcade is a covered street which has the biggest selection of jewelers in Scotland all under one roof. John Baird takes the credit for its ornate iron-framed hammerbeam roof which is as pleasing to the eye as the glittering contents of the shop window displays. The L-shaped arcade was built in 1904 and to this day houses an array of local jewelery designers' shops as well as antique jewelers shops. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Art supplies, creative toys and gifts |
94 Queen Street Glasgow G1 3EN United Kingdom +44 141 221 1101 |
This shop sells all the supplies a budding Rembrandt requires so it's a necessary haunt of art students. But as well as brushes, paints and specialist papers, it has a fantastic selection of beads, strings and shiny things for making jewelry and photo frames. It's a great place to find a gift for somebody creative as they have a huge range of kits to choose from, plus toys, magnetic dress-up Venus de Milos, pocket games, novelty items and genuinely amusing greetings cards. It's always packed and there's barely enough space to turn around so be careful not to knock the displays over. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Just along from the Aspecto shoe shop at 20 Gordon Street, this place is less footwear-orientated and more clothing obsessed. The labels here are slightly different too, a bit more urban streetwear than urban casual. The young men who choose to shop here tend to be genuinely interested in clothes and are often attracted by the sound of names like Duffer of St George, Timberland, Camper, Paul Smith and Wannabe, while they would be repelled by names like Littlewoods and Poundstretcher. There's also a limited range of shoes for women. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh and filling baked goods |
3 West Nile Street Glasgow G1 2PS United Kingdom +44 141 248 8591 |
Aulds is a very Scottish bakery with a range of savoury pastries that includes the famous steak stoater, bridies, pasties, scotch and macaroni pies. They even do a sort of superior meat pie made from Aberdeen Angus steak, which is a far cry from the kind of thing you'll find on sale down at Ibrox Park. Delicious sweet cakes and pastries are also available as well as cups of hot home-made soup, and there's a cafe at the back of this and most other branches if you'd rather sit in. Aulds also supply baked goods to Safeway supermarkets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A mecca for indie-kids, there is a lot more to this discount record shop than meets the eye. Inside, the displays are ever-changing, featuring the latest CDs and vinyl, with a slant to independent label releases and artists. With just as many second-hand tapes, vinyl and CDs as new releases, the shop is popular with students and anyone who doesn't want to pay inflated prices. The walls are festooned with posters for upcoming gigs and releases while fanzines from home and abroad are piled high. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is the relatively central alternative for Celtic FC fans to buy all the Hoops gear they can carry when they can't be bothered going to Parkhead. Queues form outside this particular shop when a new strip is in the air, with everybody gasping to get their mitts on the new colours first. In addition, there are plenty of souvenirs to bankrupt you and the prices are comparable to any other Premier League team. Standard and reliable store |
97 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8AR United Kingdom +44 844 561 6161 http://www.debenhams.com/ |
This is a good, reliable store in the city centre with a wide range of home accessories and clothes. Debenhams has not traditionally been thought of as the classiest of department stores but the introduction of designers such as Jasper Conran and Pierce Fionda has led to an up-turn in their chic reputation. They now provide high quality suits and dresses at reasonable prices and have quite a few trendy labels in stock too. Hats are a specialty (Philip Treacy designs them), as is the wedding-list service they provide. Every year they run a Bride of the Year competition, which focuses and consolidates their Bridal strengths. The first-floor cafe is a popular place for shoppers to refuel during a retail marathon. Upstairs they also have a small open workshop, where regular craft displays are held and staff can advise and inspire. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The jolly jeweller |
33 Argyll Arcade 30 Buchanan Street Glasgow G2 8BD United Kingdom +44 141 221 0763 |
This family-run business is one of the friendliest shops in Glasgow. Stepping over the threshold is like entering a bygone age, so if you want a story to tell your friends that no one else will have, this place is definitely worth a visit. As well as the packed window display in which Victorian earrings, rings and lockets jostle for space with nouveau brooches and pendants, there's an honest valuation service. Ask for a valuation and you'll probably get the history of the piece too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Varied vintage clothing |
King's Court 99 King Street Glasgow G1 5RB United Kingdom +44 141 553 1936 |
Go in wearing ordinary boring everyday clothes, and come out dressed ready for adventure in a khaki flared safari suit. Of all the vintage outlets in the city, this is the most eclectic and exciting. Sadly, the fantastic display of 70's Y-fronts is not for sale, but the most intense craving for luridly patterned polyester can be satisfied easily here, as well as less garish clothing needs. Help support the protection of Scotland's wildlife and many prestigious buildings by buying a gift here. The traditional souvenirs have been cut down to a bare minimum as this particular shop now operates under the subtitle of Glasgow Style. It's a retail gallery for the city's most talented contemporary designers and you can admire and buy textiles, ceramics, glassware, jewelry, scarves and bags that have all been either created or manufactured in Glasgow. You can also find information on National Trust properties here, including the historic building which houses this shop - Hutchesons' Hall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic, well-cut clothing for all the family |
70-76 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8AG United Kingdom +44 141 226 3311 http://www.next.co.uk/ |
This is a large and busy store that comprises clothing for all the family and a range of items to adorn your home. The latter includes an array of stylish candles and knicknacks, bed linen, covers for cushions and a range of crockery. The clothes are much the same - menswear features good-quality jumpers and sweaters in mostly neutral colors as well as a fairly wide choice of suits, shirts, ties, socks and so on. The womens wear range makes concessions to street wear, with combat style trousers, body warmers and fleeces, but the more classic and formal end of the range is well represented too and it's a great place to buy a suit. Children and babies are well catered for, with adorable and soft mini-fleeces, combats and hooded tops. Everything in this store is sensibly priced and of good quality. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This super chain of liquor stores has won so many awards it hardly seems worth anyone else entering. Wines are available to suit all tastes and budgets and are imported from every corner of the globe while at the back of this branch is the Fine Wines Center, a must for those who consider themselves connoisseurs. Not only do they supply us with bottles from every region and grape variety, there's also an exciting selection of spirits and beers, including Double Chocolate stout and the amusingly named and very cheap Dumb Blond lager. Not just for work |
54-56 Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 3JE United Kingdom +44 141 248 8346 http://www.office.co.uk/ |
Funky footwear of the highest order, but not at the high prices you might expect. The first part of this store is for grown-ups of both sexes and comprises everything from dainty, beaded slip-ons and strappy, pastel clubbing shoes to clumpy loafers and platforms. When you've spotted the footwear of your dreams, relax on their multi-colored, stripy leather seats and wait for the assistant's quick return. Venture into the back section of the shop, cutely titled Offspring, and you'll enter a slightly younger market in trainers and sports shoes with all the popular brands like Merril, Converse and Acupuncture. The store sounds are popular and clubby but don't dominate, giving you the opportunity to confer with friends. This is the only branch of Office in Scotland. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Broad range of sports clothes |
53-63 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8AH United Kingdom +44 141 221 7751 |
Occupying a prime site on Argyle Street, this Glasgow institution has suffered of late from the influx of bargain sports stores popping up all over town. Subsequently they have slashed already reasonable prices to compete but fortunately haven't compromised on the width of their range. Whether it's hockey, tennis, basketball or swimming, they have top brand names in sportwear, footwear and equipment. Football is given merely equal shelf space to the other sports featured, a breath of fresh air in a football crazy town. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Orcadian elegance |
98 Argyle Street Glasgow G2 8BQ United Kingdom +44 141 221 4490 http://www.ortak.co.uk/ |
Based in Orkney, these silversmiths have been producing jewellery for over 30 years. There's a big emphasis on tradition, but with the magical blend of Scottish and Norse cultures you'll soon realize that there's nothing quite like it. Designs are based on original markings, artefacts and drawings from the Hebrides, like the Pictish stone designs in the Orkney range. The Charles Rennie Mackintosh range is particularly popular. Mail and on-line ordering mean you can have a piece of Scotland's heritage wherever you are in the world. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sister store of Karen Millen next door, this spacious boutique is dominated inside by a huge display table in the centre of the room, on which lie a few choice examples of their luxury knitwear. Unlike their bigger sibling however, you won't have to take out a mortgage to shop here, as items are much lower in price. Fabrics are top quality cottons and fine, silky threads in trousers and knitwear. Eveningwear is fun, featuring black transparent tops with lacy, flowery trims and matching skirts. Art nouveau setting |
48 Buchanan Street Glasgow G1 3JX United Kingdom +44 141 204 1685 http://www.princessquare.co.uk/ |
Princes Square is easily the most favoured and famous shopping centre in Glasgow - probably because of its high-quality shops and art nouveau surroundings. The stylish cafes, bars and restaurants also prove a potent draw and are all open until midnight. The building dates from 1841, although the original architect (John Baird) would recognise little in the modern interior, which boasts a glass ceiling and elevators as well as lavishly ornate ironwork and a grand staircase. When you tire of looking around the five floors of shops, many of which cannot be found elsewhere in Scotland, relax with a coffee and admire the mosaics, fountain and Foucault Pendulum. Woollens, weaves and golf clothes |

An absolute must for overseas visitors who want to buy traditionally Scottish gifts for friends and family back home. This shop stocks everything connected with Caledonia except haggis and cabers, although they could probably get you one if you really wanted. The name Pringle is generally associated with golf jumpers, which they still manufacture and sell, along with more fashionable styles of knitwear. They also have knitwear from Johnstons of Elgin, Harris Tweed, Celtic jewellery, shortbread, clan information and lots of tartan. The company is part of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill so expect the same high quality and friendly hospitable atmosphere. As well as sterling and credit cards, they accept US dollars and most major EU currencies. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A great variety of tobaccos and pipes is on offer here. Glasgow's wealth was made on the back of the tobacco trade in the 17th and 18th centuries so it is only natural that its importance should continue. You can buy cigarettes, Cuban cigars, rolling papers, filters, leather tobacco cases, lighters and packaged or loose tobacco for both pipes and cigarettes. Europe's biggest glass building |
55 Saint Enoch Place Glasgow G1 4BW United Kingdom +44 141 204 3900 http://www.stenoch.com/ |
The St Enoch Centre is the largest all-glass building in Europe and that is probably the best thing you can say about it visually. It has, however, become one of Glasgow's best-known landmarks. The complex contains over 80 stores, mostly chains, and Scotland's biggest food court. You can expect to find many British high street stores here such as Boots, BhS, Debenhams, Oasis, Burton and TK Maxx. Their kiddy cabs and children's play area make shopping with the whole family a little less stressful and the choice of eating options will keep everyone happy. It may not offer the city's most exciting shopping experience but the huge variety of shops all under one roof makes this a good choice for retail therapy in a city that enjoys more than its fair share of rainy days. There are only two branches of this store in Glasgow, the Tesco Metro in the city centre, and a larger version in Milngavie. They may be outnumbered by other supermarket chains but this is an essential stop for most people who work in the center, as well as shoppers on their way home. All the usual everyday household products and foods are here, represented by the most popular brands and Tesco's excellent own-label goods.
