Argyll Arcade

Largest jewellers' arcade in Scotland
30 Buchanan Street
Glasgow G2 8BX
United Kingdom
+44 141 221 6680
Argyll Arcade is a covered street which has the biggest selection of jewelers in Scotland all under one roof. John Baird takes the credit for its ornate iron-framed hammerbeam roof which is as pleasing to the eye as the glittering contents of the shop window displays. The L-shaped arcade was built in 1904 and to this day houses an array of local jewelery designers' shops as well as antique jewelers shops.

Clothes for all the family can be bought here plus some funky household items and gifts. The clothes are middle range and middle market although you can find some nice separates; the children's clothes are quite cheerful, bright and above all trendy. It doesn't have the classiest reputation, but you can often pick up some good (and cheap!) designer copies, although the quality of the fabrics usually explains the low price.

Buchanan Galleries

The largest city centre development in Scotland
Buchanan Street
Glasgow G1 2FF
United Kingdom
+44 141 333 9898
http://www.buchanangalleries.c...
This shopping centre is the biggest city centre development in the whole of Scotland, covering an expanse of 600,000 square feet. It opened in 1998 at the top end of Buchanan Street, next to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Its main attraction is John Lewis but it has around 80 other high street shops including Next, Boots and Hennes. There are several good places to sit down for a snack - John Lewis and Habitat both have cafes and the food gallery on the second floor offers four concessions, including Burger King. The centre is easy to get to as it's only three minutes' drive from the M8 motorway and with 4,500 spaces it won't be a problem parking.

There are some unusual little shops in this arcade which are well worth a visit. It's located on a tiny cobbled lane just behind Byres Road but if you follow the signs you can't miss it. Inside, there are two floors with second-hand music and book shops, a cafe, a barbers and lots of fabulous independent gift shops selling everything from imported Japanese toys to Scottish soaps, aromatherapy oils, handmade jewelery and American kitsch.

Debenhams

Standard and reliable store
97 Argyle Street
Glasgow G2 8AR
United Kingdom
+44 844 561 6161
http://www.debenhams.com/
This is a good, reliable store in the city centre with a wide range of home accessories and clothes. Debenhams has not traditionally been thought of as the classiest of department stores but the introduction of designers such as Jasper Conran and Pierce Fionda has led to an up-turn in their chic reputation. They now provide high quality suits and dresses at reasonable prices and have quite a few trendy labels in stock too. Hats are a specialty (Philip Treacy designs them), as is the wedding-list service they provide. Every year they run a Bride of the Year competition, which focuses and consolidates their Bridal strengths. The first-floor cafe is a popular place for shoppers to refuel during a retail marathon.

It may not be in central Glasgow, but the Forge Shopping Centre does have loads of shops all under one roof. In fact, with 78 different units, there's bound to be the one you need. There are clothes and household stores, gadget and gift shops and a branch of the Asda supermarket chain which stays open until 8p most nights, so you can do all your shopping in one trip. Entertainment for the kids is provided every weekend with magic shows, a clown and free face painting and the UGC Cinema is nearby if you fancy making a day out of it with the family.

House of Fraser

Glasgow institution
21 Buchanan Street
Glasgow G1 3HF
United Kingdom
+44 141 221 3880
http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/
Frasers is an institution which shows a Glasgow both traditional and modern. Although this chain can now be found in cities across the UK, it was founded here in 1849. It houses European designer clothes as well as upmarket Scottish tweeds and tartans. The interior is splendidly ornate, with a grand staircase leading to the other floors and balconies. The store is huge, lavish and designed like a maze, so it's even easier than usual to lose yourself in the joy of shopping. The ground floor is devoted to menswear (both classic and contemporary), shoes, upmarket cosmetics concessions (including MAC, Bobbi Brown, Aveda and Philosophy) and accessories. Three more floors house collections of designer wear and high street gear for women and children, high quality furniture, a cappuccino bar and a restaurant.

Merchant City is where the bright young things with lots of cash to spare come to shop. Situated amidst this haven of luxurious stores, smart restaurants and trendy bars, stands the exclusive Italian Centre at the northern end. Expensive designer boutiques such as Versace Collections and Emporio Armani make their glamorous presence felt along with the Mediterranean-style cafes that spill out on to the pavement. This is one of the best places in Glasgow to spot local and visiting celebrities so keep your eyes peeled.

Traditionally a firm favourite with the middle-class contingent, John Lewis's slogan is, "Never Knowingly Undersold". Therein lies their reputation for being reliable - if you find the same product cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference. There are many different brands of clothing for all age groups, tastes and budgets. They also have haberdashery and millinery departments and an excellent range of household products - the best makes at good prices - as well as some toys to keep the kids happy. The store can provide interpreters for various languages, just tell an assistant if you require this service.

Marks & Spencer is renowned for its absolutely delicious food and ready meals, its popular underwear ranges, make-up, soft furnishings and its clothes and shoes (lots of non-leather) for all ages. It's a great place to find high quality goods at affordable prices. The company has recently introduced an "Autograph" range of designer clothes, at a higher price than its other ranges, so there really is something for every taste and budget.

Princes Square

Art nouveau setting
48 Buchanan Street
Glasgow G1 3JX
United Kingdom
+44 141 204 1685
http://www.princessquare.co.uk/
Princes Square is easily the most favoured and famous shopping centre in Glasgow - probably because of its high-quality shops and art nouveau surroundings. The stylish cafes, bars and restaurants also prove a potent draw and are all open until midnight. The building dates from 1841, although the original architect (John Baird) would recognise little in the modern interior, which boasts a glass ceiling and elevators as well as lavishly ornate ironwork and a grand staircase. When you tire of looking around the five floors of shops, many of which cannot be found elsewhere in Scotland, relax with a coffee and admire the mosaics, fountain and Foucault Pendulum.

Savoy Centre

Covered market stalls
140 Sauchiehall Street
Glasgow G2 3DH
United Kingdom
+44 141 333 9507
Now a Glasgow landmark as an indoor market, the original name "The Cumming & Smith Building" derived from the warehouse owners who commissioned it from Henry and David Barclay in 1891. The current name comes from the Savoy Cinema, which was accessed through the centre's main door. Catering to the low end of the market, this is an excellent place to go if a visit to the bigger Barras frightens you. Eavesdrop in the Windows cafe, which offers an excellent view of Sauchiehall Street and hear plenty of Glasgow patter.

St Enoch Centre

Europe's biggest glass building
55 Saint Enoch Place
Glasgow G1 4BW
United Kingdom
+44 141 204 3900
http://www.stenoch.com/
The St Enoch Centre is the largest all-glass building in Europe and that is probably the best thing you can say about it visually. It has, however, become one of Glasgow's best-known landmarks. The complex contains over 80 stores, mostly chains, and Scotland's biggest food court. You can expect to find many British high street stores here such as Boots, BhS, Debenhams, Oasis, Burton and TK Maxx. Their kiddy cabs and children's play area make shopping with the whole family a little less stressful and the choice of eating options will keep everyone happy. It may not offer the city's most exciting shopping experience but the huge variety of shops all under one roof makes this a good choice for retail therapy in a city that enjoys more than its fair share of rainy days.

Watt Brothers

Corner shop that locals love
119 Sauchiehall Street
Glasgow G2 3EL
United Kingdom
+44 141 332 5831
Although lacking the prestige and elaborate decor of its peers, low prices more than compensate for this department store's sartorial shortcomings. The premises are quite compact but good use is made of the space and there are lifts between all six floors, which are clearly laid out and impossible to get lost in. Departments include menswear, ladies wear, soft furnishings, kitchenware, china, gifts and haberdashery. Customers are almost exclusively locals, perhaps because the entrance is actually round the corner on Hope Street which some visitors to the city may find confusing.

The first thing that hits you as you walk into any Woolworths store is the sheer amount of sweets and chocolates that is on display - a considerable temptation for parents as well as children. Woolies sells all manner of practical household items at very reasonable prices but also has a brilliant collection of magazines, toys, computer games, CDs and videos. It's a great place to go for Christmas decorations, souvenirs and greetings cards as well.
